Has anybody tiled their lounge?

Hijistmeagain · 01/09/2019 08:18

We have just bought some gorgeous wood effect porcelain tiles for our lounge (undergoing massive renovations). We thought it would be durable with one DS and 2 dogs. Already planned for under floor heating and rugs, but has anybody got any negatives? Or positives? Or any tips!

Well if you have bought them, it’s a bit late to ask! I think they feel harsh underfoot in a lounge. I prefer wood. I do have tiles in my kitchen and large hall. The dog was clean before he went in the lounge. No one has muddy feet in the lounge and DC didn’t mess up the floor either - with what? All “mess” was in the kitchen!

Tiled floors throughout the house are quite common in other countries. I can see it would be easy to keep clean and if you have underfloor heating and rugs it shouldn't be cold underfoot.

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/09/2019 09:07

They will be very easy to keep clean but it would put me off if I was buying a house. I know they are practical but I don't like how they look.

BertrandRussell · 01/09/2019 09:09

I read that as “tidied” and was about to say “I think so- in about 1998”.....

OtraCosaMariposa · 01/09/2019 09:11

Very common in hotter countries where they aren't so keen on wood flooring.

It is of course your house and entirely up to you but if you are planning to sell at any point in the future it may put people off.

Todayissunny · 01/09/2019 09:11

We don't live in the uk and have them. Also With underfloor heating. They are easy to keep clean and the best material for over underfloor heating.you do need to wear something on your feet in winter though even with underfloor heating.
We are moving to a house needing complete renovation and will most likely lay tiles throughout.

Hijistmeagain · 01/09/2019 10:00

Thanks for the replies! We haven't long bought the house, and not thinking of selling on (you never know though). It is a lounge/dining room as it's all open plan downstairs so carpet wasn't an option and the wood/laminate that was already laid has swollen (previous owners probably mopping too much) so has put us off. Just interested what others think and if anyone had any awful experience with them really! Grin

Yes we have the wood effect times and love them. They are easy to clean and are great.

chopc · 01/09/2019 10:10

We are planning same (wood effect tiles throughout the ground floor with UFH)

Didn't choose white tiles my husband loved for the reasons you described but the main issue would be the cold as they look like wood. So with UFH and rugs problem solved

Bluewavescrashing · 01/09/2019 10:12

Under floor heating is expensive to run. My in laws have it and never use it. Their huge house is always freezing so I bring slippers when we visit.

Bluewavescrashing · 01/09/2019 10:14

We have very high end vinyl flooring that looks like wood. It's brilliant and visitors always say 'what a lovely wooden floor'. It's not as cold as tiles and very easy to clean.

Inforthelonghaul · 01/09/2019 10:22

I replaced very expensive kitchen tiles with Karndean flooring as I found the tiles to be cold and they were just too hard. If you dropped a cup or plate it smashed regardless whereas with vinyl it’s more likely to survive.

With UFH the cold is less likely to be an issue I know but somehow vinyl just feels warmer and as a PP said the vast majority of visitors assume its wood.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/09/2019 12:40

You'll have to be careful about not dropping anything heavy on them! That's one thing that'd put me right off.

wowfudge · 01/09/2019 13:12

I wouldn't have tiles in the living room and it would put me off a place as I'd want to replace them with something warmer and less echoey and taking up tiles and the subsequent state of the subfloor could be an issue.

jojo2305 · 01/09/2019 13:20

We have wood effect tiles over UFH. They look great and are super practical, especially with the dog. We live in an area where it's very common to use tiles throughout the house. The wet system UFH is cheaper than our old radiators to run. Only the electric type is very expensive.
It is true though that things are a bit more likely to break than with vinyl etc.

BertrandRussell · 01/09/2019 13:29

I was brought up in a hot country with ceramic tiled floors. Lovely and cool. But very unforgiving to China and glassware.......

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 01/09/2019 13:38

Were thinking of doing the same thing. Can I see pics/link of the tiles you're using?

We want chevron style flooring and tiles seem like a durable and cost effective way to do it. I am concerned about temp and breakages though

Letsgowalking · 01/09/2019 14:09

Lived overseas in a tiled floor house. Very echoey and a bit like living in a swimming pool if the rooms are sizeable. Wouldn’t recommend as in UK would be really cold.

lioness88 · 01/09/2019 14:28

We have exactly the same, wood effect tiles throughout the entire downstairs. No regrets at all, haven't noticed them to get cold in winter and we don't have underfloor heating.
Have found them to be much more durable than wood so far, we chose not to have wood floor again as at our last place it just got trashed.

purplepingu · 01/09/2019 14:56

We have these in our hallway and have just bought the same ones to replace our living room carpet. The hallway is lovely and warm with the underfloor heating underneath but we can't feel the underfloor heating in the living room despite the carpet shop assuring us the carpet was suitable for use over underfloor heating.

I can't wait to put them down! I've got a 4 and 2 year old, plus cats. It's lovely to be able to sweep and mop away any spills or dirt.

BogglesGoggles · 01/09/2019 14:59

I really dislike tiles in any setting. It all comes down to personal preference. If you like it who cares what others think?

BubblesBuddy · 01/09/2019 16:24

How do you trash wood in a lounge? Some houses have very old wood floors that are beautiful! Neither should wood (solid or engineered) bow or swell. If it has, there is almost certainly moisture underneath it. Possibly a leak.

AwkwardPaws27 · 01/09/2019 17:14

Wood effect should be ok as they'll have a textured surface - I'd avoid smooth tiles with a dogs as it can be slippery for them and older dogs with ageing joints can struggle to stand up on smooth floors.

soberfabulous · 01/09/2019 17:50

I live overseas and the whole house is tiled. It's amazing with pets and for dust. If you have any sorts of allergies it's far better than carpet.

As others have said we have rugs in certain areas. Otherwise the tiles are loud and proud and we love them.

Hijistmeagain · 01/09/2019 17:57

Although opinions are varying i think we made a good decision. Thanks for all the replies. We will just have to be extra careful not to drop anything! easier said than done
