veneered composite inside doors

I am very angry & need ideas to see if this problem can be salvaged.
Ideas gratefully received thanks.

Our joiner has had to cut the width of our b&q veneered oak composite filled doors to make them fit the door frames in all rooms.
Problem is he has had to saw off so much of the veneer that the composite filling inside the doors shows.
Although he has shaved it from the inside where the hinges are, it is really obvious when the door is open.
Has anyone else had this problem & any ideas on how to make it look nice & make sure the veneer doesn't splinter off in time?

Hi @hasabadboss just bumping this thread for you.

Hopefully some MNers will be along soon with some advice.

hasabadboss · 21/08/2019 08:59

Thank you we are really worried as the joiner is not being helpful.
Any ideas anyone?

Could you add a photo? Might help get some ideas.

I have attached a photo of the composite showing on the hinge edge of our veneered doors. Any ideas on how to cover it (is there any special type of sealant or paint to ensure the edges of the veneer don't splinter?
Or would a strip of veneer be best, has anyone else had this problem?

How much was taken off? There wasn't really much else the joiner could do imo. I think I've seen this before - maybe somewhere in my parents house. Off there shortly so will take a look.

Wingedharpy · 21/08/2019 10:55

You can buy pre glued oak veneer edging tape which would cover the raw edge. - see Amazon, Ebay etc.
Problem is, door probably wouldn't fit again.
Joiner will need to take off door, shave a smidgen more then cover with edging tape.
Or, could you paint the edge to lighten up the colour so that the raw edge is not so obvious?
Depends where door is situated really, as to how much time/effort/money you want to spend on this.

Thanks everyone these are good ideas & look forward to hearing more from buckeejit as we were beginning to think we were the only ones with this problem & it is all internal doors and looks horrible.

yes thank you everyone. I still want to hear if buckeeji has seen this before and if any other ideas but yes thank you Wingedharpy for these ideas especially removing a bit more of the door to fit the veneer strip.
We will try a DIY shop & see if they can recommend a special kind of paint that matches or try amazon or the DIY shop for veneer strips.
It was the joiner who ordered and fitted the doors, then we noticed the composite showing.
Thank you all I feel I have a better idea of how to go now.

it's not composite, it's chipboard.

Are they fire doors?

hasabadboss · 21/08/2019 15:47

Ah thank you PigletJohn. Our joiner told us he was getting us solid oak doors and we now have this chipboard/composite inside.
He has charged us a lot of money and is not communicating with us since we said about the chipboard showing.
I guess chipboard is cheaper than composite.
We paid him £700 for 5 of these doors - excluding parts and fitting and wonder if we have been robbed.
Do you know if there is any regulatory body we could contact for help or advise?
Thanks

can you see your door on here Fire doors are usually 44mm thick, other internal doors about 35mm.

It will probably be listed as "solid core" which are quite good for blocking sound. You can see the retail prices. He may have got a discount.

If you can find any trace of the maker's name, you can ask if they sell a veneer edge strip for cases like yours. Premdor is a popular UK maker.

a more skilled carpenter will sometimes cut the edge off, then cut the door to size, then glue back the edge.

hasabadboss · 21/08/2019 17:08

Thanks so much PigletJohn. Yes keeping the veneer, adjusting the sizing to add this back on and then putting the veneer back on would have been better, even I can see that.
We will try Premdor thanks.
I think ours are about 35 mm thick thank you.

I've used veneer strips in our kitchen and was surprised at just how easy they were. After prepping the area you just iron them on. They have been up for about two years now and are one of my more successful efforts at DIY.
