Please can i have your thoughts- wetroom v cubicle shower

Hi,

Just wondering what people's thoughts and experiences are please?

I have a small bathroom, about 1.8m x 1.6m on the first floor which does really need redoing.

I don't really have a use for a bath so leaning towards a shower only. I think I'd prefer a shower cubicle but i do live in a hard water area so cleaning the screens would be a pain. Someone suggested a wetroom but I'm concerned about a hidden leak if as its on the first floor and how awkward that would be to fix.

There is a chance a may rent out in the future as well so whilst I know i would do the work for me, it is a factor to consider.

I'd be really grateful for your thoughts. Thank you.

I dont like wetrooms because i find if you need to go in just to use the loo or wash your hands the floor gets wet all over. However you can get very low shower trays now and glass partitions with a hinged section which stops the water spraying out all over. They also do glass now with special coatings which keep it cleaner.

Not a wet room!

We have one in our current house (installed by previous owners) and it has caused no end of problems. Leaks are a PITA to locate and access to fix. Constantly wet floors are really annoying too (takes ages to dry afterwards) in a small space.

Thank you for you thoughts. Yes, I'd heard of the 'self cleaning' screens so will look at them.

I hate wet rooms! You can never get your feet properly dry

Cubicle every time

FermatsTheorem · 10/08/2019 13:07

Another wet room hater here - I cannot for the life of me work out why they became so trendy. You can't dry your feet properly when you've finished your shower, and next time you need to go to the toilet you have to put wellies on! And that's before you get to the potential leaks issue.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 10/08/2019 13:08

We have a very low shower tray and large screen which means that you step into the shower area but the rest of the bathroom doesn't get wet. Like a wet room, but not. I love it.

RavenLG · 10/08/2019 13:18

Agree with the no to a wet room. You could go for a double shower like this so you have the extra space that a wet room provides but it’s contained. I live in a hard water area and do have a nightmare with the streaks. I think the key is staying on top of it. Ours got bad with the pervious owner. I’ve done as much as I can with it but it’ll never be perfect, however in previous rented house we had a brand new shower and it was fine when we stayed on top of it!

We’ve just been to view a lovely house but the en suite has a wet room and it was really off putting. Towels, toilet rolls etc would get soaked. I just didn’t like it.

TapasForTwo · 10/08/2019 13:39

Yet another wet room hater here. We had one in some holiday accommodation once, and got fed up with getting wet feet when just needing the loo.

scattercushion17 · 10/08/2019 14:14

Thank you for all of your thoughts. You have confirmed what I mostly thought but wanted to check that I wasn't missing anything.

Yes to staying on top of the limescale - my issue is from thd previous owner too.

I like the double shower, will look into those.

Cheers all! :)

I found that another issue with a wetroom is that they are so cold in cool weather/winter. an enclosed shower feels warmer.

scattercushion17 · 10/08/2019 14:48

Lovely thanks, another thing on the 'no' list.

I don't recognise any of what people are saying about wet rooms! We have one, but it has a screen so the whole room doesn't get wet, and have never had an issue with it not drying out or being able to dry my feet. Sounds like people have experienced poorly fitted and/or badly designed ones.

We also have an en suite with a large cubicle. And whilst it is fully functional, it just doesn't look as nice.

Wetrooms huge PITA!!!

HelloyouKant · 10/08/2019 15:07

With a screen would be much better

scattercushion17 · 10/08/2019 16:44

Thanks for the further comments and photos. Its really helpful. Lots to thonk about!

A went room is fab if the room is very big. My DD has her bathroom set up as one, but still has a glass screen on one side. But there's loads of floor space so you can step into a dry bath mat.
My bathroom isn't very small, so we removed the bath because we prefer showers, and had the largest cubicle fitted that would fit.

scattercushion17 · 10/08/2019 19:14

Cool thanks. I don't have baths either so thats why I'm looking to not replace thr bath.

I have never understood the concept of a wet room. Why have the entire room get wet? The wet floor is not safe and who wants to have to dry the toilet seat? Mind you, I am Canadian and we don't do wet rooms. At least I have never seen one. Cubicle or glass screen for me. Much more practical.

PeoniesarePink · 10/08/2019 19:33

We were fitting out our very small ensuite as a wetroom but thankfully we booked a holiday cottage that had one. It was a good one with a heated floor but by the end of the week, we were so over getting wet feet having to go back into the bathroom! They're style over substance in my opinion - and pointless in a small space. We went for a low profile shower tray with a glass screen that is bad enough to keep the limescale off - let alone the entire room.

scattercushion17 · 11/08/2019 09:59

Thanks all. You've pretty much confirmed my thoughts.

Hi, we moved into our house three years ago and the wet room looked beautiful. It leaked like a sieve though (wish we’d realised that earlier than we did.....) Anyway, last year we had it replaced with a proper bathroom and it is a million times better. It is tiny - similar square footage to yours, we got a three sided Aquadart shower cubicle (as big as would fit, it was quite expensive though but worth it) and a combi sink/toilet (sink above the toilet cistern) which is weird but very practical. The shower cubicle is warm, the floor is dry, there are no leaks and I am happy.

Anyway, it definitely looks good now but I’d never have a wet room - leaks are a PITA and despite looking fab, the whole thing was a horror story !

Mumtofourandnomore · 12/08/2019 21:42

Here is a pic of our tiny bathroom with the weird toilet lol ! I appreciate the tile colour may not be everybody’s choice - we had to have a three sided shower because of the window and the layout......

I hate our wet room. I will never have one again- it never dries so you have to constantly go to the loo with a wet floor.
