What else can I do with down stairs loo

My downstairs loo is quite big and there’s some wasted space behind the door. It’s not deep enough to add built in storage but would it be odd to add coat hooks or some type of shoe storage? Can I store coats in the loo? There was a bookcase in there at one point (supposed to be temporary but stayed there for 3 years) but that didn’t look right.

If you put coats and shoes in it would be a cloakroom, I don't see the issue

ElstreeViaduct · 25/07/2019 20:55

Yes I think coat storage would make perfect sense

JoJoSM2 · 25/07/2019 21:00

I’d feel uncomfortable with coats in the loo.

The room looks quite long - couldn’t you squeeze the loo at the far end and have coats at the near end? (With a wall and door in between).

loubielou31 · 25/07/2019 21:05

I would put coat hooks behind the door and probably a shelf or cupboard on the wall above the door to hide stuff you don't use very often, eg winter hats and gloves.

TattiePants · 25/07/2019 21:06

I know what you mean about coats in the same room as the loo JoJo which I guess is why I’ve never got round to doing it. If it makes a difference, it has high ceilings and is quite airy so rarely smelly! Just looking at a quick fix for now rather than redoing the whole room.

Id get a joiner in and arrange for the door to open outward instead of inward. Suddenly you will have more options... Bidet,storage..etc??

JoJoSM2 · 25/07/2019 21:18

Given how big your downstairs loo is, do you struggle for space? It looks like it’s inside a big house.

If it would make a big difference, then I’d go with loubielou’s idea of using the door + shelf above.

I put a 300mm larder unit in my new ensuite. Fabulous for towels, toiletries, cleaning materials etc and I love it. However, in my old house, I did have coats and a rack above door for hats, umbrellas etc and would have had shoes too if I'd had room.

That space behind the door looks like it might be more than 350mm so you could fit a narrow Ikea Pax in there with a door to keep smells out?

TattiePants · 25/07/2019 21:58

@jojosm2 we do have lots of storage space BUT our main coat, shoe, stuff cupboard is gradually getting overtaken by DH’s hobbies (hence the shoe mountain). If I put the coats somewhere else, I can add more shelves to the cupboard.

Grin I’m always trying to make sure DH’s hobbies are contained to the garage.

A little unit sounds like a brill idea. At least you won’t have stuff on show.

trickyex · 25/07/2019 22:20

I have used a shallow IKEA pax in my largeish downstairs loo, to store tools/spare loo roll/cleaning things etc.
Another option would be the IKEA shoe cabinets which would work well in your space, the taller one would give plenty of storage for shoes and cleaning things.

TattiePants · 25/07/2019 22:22

Nooo, I feel a trip to ikea is in order! I’ll measure the depth and see if I can fit a slim unit in (well I would if I could find the bloody tape measure that someone’s misplaced!)

If you could move the door you might have room for a shower.
We did this with our downstairs bog which looked to be about the same size as yours but we moved the doorway out a bit into the corridor, changed the sink for a small 'cloakroom' basin and we had enough room for a shower.
We wanted two showers, you may not of course!

I don’t like coats in loos personally, it’s a bit icky thinking they might get smelly!

A narrow cupboard / cabinet would work well - keep cleaning stuff, bathroom supplies etc in there.

Tartyflette · 25/07/2019 22:26

The basin was in fact a 'vanity unit' with enclosed shelving underneath for storing cleaning materials and general stuff.

titchy · 25/07/2019 22:27

We've got our washing machine in ours!

Pixie2015 · 25/07/2019 22:32

I know someone who hangs coats in toilet and they always smell damp and it looks awful too - your bathroom looks clean and relaxing 😌

TattiePants · 25/07/2019 22:32

Those ikea shoe cupboards would work. We’ve got a utility and 2 bathrooms upstairs so it’s more about using the current dead space rather than needing to fit a shower or washer in.

HerkyBaby · 25/07/2019 22:53

Well you could move the loo roll holder closer to the toilet....

trickyex · 25/07/2019 23:17

I agree about the loo roll holder too, its quite a hike from the loo!
The shoe units fit cleaning products and spare loo roll in them too so could be quite useful. They also look good, discreet and neither too modern or old in style.

TattiePants · 25/07/2019 23:25

We’re a very tall family so it’s in the perfect position for us!

No help but that’s a lovely cloakroom OP!

Rarfy · 26/07/2019 07:26

Our downstairs loo is huge. I have a coat rack, tumble dryer and shoes in there. Such a waste of space really in our new build house.

minipie · 26/07/2019 11:06

What does the wall with the tree wallpaper back onto? If it’s the hallway then I wonder if you could knock an opening through that wall and have a shallow cupboard accessed from the hall. Can never have too much hallway storage...
