Which house do you prefer?

We are looking for our family home for the next 15 or so years and I'm torn.

Which one do you prefer? Both are very different and very different to our new build. Both close to good schools and transport.

Property #1

I love house #1. Beautiful property

pinksquash13 · 27/06/2019 19:29

I like both. What's your capacity to do work and how much money do you have to renovate. That would rule my decision. As as aside, not keen on Harlow so therefore personally I'd choose the other based on location.

timeforawine · 27/06/2019 19:31

1, beautiful

SleepWarrior · 27/06/2019 19:34

One is stunning but I think 2 could by updated to be almost as wonderful. One is a nicer building, but two is detached and has a driveway, a tricky call. Are the streets they are on equally nice? That would be the clincher for me. If those are equal then I would probably fall in love with one but then sadly go with 2 as DH would point out that it's a safer and more practical option as I hate hearing neighbours and hate not being able to park the car!

stillworkingitout · 27/06/2019 19:34

I think #2 has more potential but you would need a big budget (£100k) to do it up - expect to find lead pipes, questionable electrics.

#1 is a lovely house but I’m not sure about whatever that is at the end of the garden.

And they are in quite different locations, are they not? That would influence my decision

thisisthetime · 27/06/2019 19:34

House no 1 is gorgeous. I’d prefer to live in sawbridgeworth though although I understand old harlow is supposed to be lovely.

Hisashiburi · 27/06/2019 19:35

Thank you all. I knew the wise ladies on my phone would have some good pointers.

Property #1 doesn't have private parking but then again we don't use the car that often.

In terms of budget, there would nothing for ages as this would be absolute max but so long as it's liveable, we could wait.

This all obviously depends on being able to actually sell my house which is proving difficult.

I quite like the area of Old Harlow although I know it has a bad reputation.

I love them both, however number 1 is instantly liveable and number 2 needs work. Have you got the finances for any work that needs doing?

SoyDora · 27/06/2019 19:36

Kenworthington · 27/06/2019 19:38

Number 1 is absolutely beautiful. No 2 is not all that. But I don’t know the area

Ohyesiam · 27/06/2019 19:38

The Edwardian one, really beautifully proportioned rooms, though the garden is a bit soulless.

The 1930s one feels a bit claustrophobic to me and you’d need to do a lot of updating.

Bluntness100 · 27/06/2019 19:39

Number 2. Number one you're paying for the fact it's already done. Number two has huge potential and can easily look way better than house one with way more space. It's a much better property.

sidesplittinglol · 27/06/2019 19:39

Definitely number 1.

Jinglejanglefish · 27/06/2019 19:40

1 is gorgeous, that kitchen is amazing.

2 would need a lot of work for me to like it, but detached with a drive is a massive plus.

Unless I had lots of cash to do up 2, I would go for 1.

TiddleTaddleTat · 27/06/2019 19:40

Is number 2 in a better area? If not and you don't have the budget/time to renovate, then I'd go with number 1.
But I'm not keen on whatever that is at the end of the garden...

PurpleLady11x · 27/06/2019 19:41

I'd always go for the detached!

FadedRed · 27/06/2019 19:43

House one is lovely , but i’d go for the detached with parking every time. Two is a bit tired, but a coat of paint would brighten everything up and then you could gradually change things to put your own mark on it.

MadameJosephine · 27/06/2019 19:45

Number 1 by a mile, it’s beautiful!

Ohhgreat · 27/06/2019 19:45

Second one - what is that huge building at the end of the garden in number 1??
Second one looks completely liveable as is, and you would never outgrow all the space on offer!

whitehalleve · 27/06/2019 19:46

Number 1 but only if I could redo the kitchen. Terrible layout with it cut in half like that it would really drive me mad.

CassianAndor · 27/06/2019 19:46

2

What on earth is the mahoosive building behind the garden in 1?

Karwomannghia · 27/06/2019 19:47

1 so you don’t have to do anything apart from plants which is easy. Number 2 has potential but not enough to justify the extra cost and hassle needed, especially when you don’t have the funds to do it.

Oblomov19 · 27/06/2019 19:47

Both are fabulous.
2 is detached. Newer. But could be updated to be beyond amazing.
1 is lovely. What's that industrial building at the bottom of the garden?

Tricky.

What's your gut OP?

Gorillaandme · 27/06/2019 19:49

House 1 😍

MrsBertBibby · 27/06/2019 19:50

1 is superficially nicer, but 2 made me think "home" at first look.

Buy 2. So much more living space.
