Wallpaper on ceilings. Bad idea?

Has anyone done this? I was all set to do it but am now wondering if I might have gotten carried away looking at photos of the William Morris museum…

In the eighties I had a fabulous french navy dolly mixture wallpaper on the ceiling and I loved it

Fooferella · 23/06/2019 13:24

Probably not if you ever want to sell your house.

DaisyCarrington · 23/06/2019 13:33

Love all of these…
Surely whoever bought the house and didn't like it would just remove the paper? Hmm I think people generally redecorate when they move in?

Omg. That would really put me off buying somewhere.

Pp was right.

You got carried away!

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 23/06/2019 13:38

If the walls and ceiling were all papered I would wonder what you were hiding underneath.

ANiceSliceOfCake · 23/06/2019 13:40

Totally depends on your house. Nice big Victorian with a modern twist yes. 3 bed semi with a conservatory no. Grin

JoJoSM2 · 23/06/2019 13:42

I think it can look cool but also agree that it could put buyers off so probably wouldn’t do it if you want to sell in the not too distant future.

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 23/06/2019 13:43

It's, err, rather a bold choice, OP!

DaisyCarrington · 23/06/2019 13:46

Was just thinking of the ceiling, not the walls!

Unfortunately I don't have a Victorian house.

I’ve seen it look fabulous in large victorian/Georgian rooms, but you need to have tall rooms to avoid being oppressive. 10/12ft ceilings. I’ve also seen the picture rail to cornices papered if you wanted a more watered down look.

forkfun · 23/06/2019 13:53

Go for it! The pictures look fantastic. Who cares what potential future buyers might potentially think. It's easy enough to change back if necessary.

DaisyCarrington · 23/06/2019 13:53

My rooms aren't that tall. I could limit it to the corridor/stairway, perhaps.

That's what I was thinking forkfun. Life's too short.
Then again things often look good in photos that don't really translate when I try to do them myself.

I like it. I think neutral bare walls with something bold on the ceiling would work really well. If you are in a smaller modern house though not anything to dark.

fancynancyclancy · 23/06/2019 13:56

It can look good but agree ideally you need high ceilings.
But if you like it go for it, it’s your home & you can always redecorate & paint the walls grey when it’s time to sell 😴😴

megletthesecond · 23/06/2019 13:58

No. It would put buyers off. Imagine spongeing (sp) a ceiling to remove it.

rollingpine · 23/06/2019 14:57

No, it would help a fire spread quickly.

wowfudge · 23/06/2019 14:58

Unless you pick a flocked paper or something textured, you could just paint over it. No need to remove it.

BentNeckLady · 23/06/2019 14:59

Those photos are gorgeous! If you’ve got that kind of interesting house with nice features then go for it!

I’ve got wallpaper on all my ceilings upstairs. It was there when we moved in. Unfortunately for us when we tried to remove it we realised it’s holding the plaster up 😂

PigletJohn · 23/06/2019 15:22

it's very difficult to remove. I suppose because sooner or later somebody will paint it white (patterns will need numerous coats) and it is difficult to wet it thoroughly.

bigtoes · 23/06/2019 15:46

Oh wow those pics look amazing!

Ambydex · 23/06/2019 15:57

If you are seriously considering going ahead, how about painting the ceiling the colour of the wallpaper so you can kind of see the effect before committing? I had a room with a turquoise ceiling once at it was awful, it made the room feel really squished. I think you need high ceilings.

Though papering over new paint might not be the best idea. Not sure.
