Looking around and found one that looks little from the front but goes back for miles!

Anyone ever lived in one like this?

Oh @eBae don't be embarrassed (seriously though I'm guessing you're v early 20s???) go for it if you like it. My first house was just like this but had fireplaces / cornicing etc. I bloody LOVED it (still miss it now 😔)

We bought it as a doer upper so MUCH cheaper than this and reinstated many of the period features. This one you're probably paying a premium on because a developer as striped it out and re done with no love etc

eBae · 17/06/2019 21:03

Shan't comment on age but I guess I'm not very well travelled! I have a few to look at - I won't take this one off the list yet because it could be a decent blank canvas, but I'd need to look in person. The floor plan shows the space as being better value for money than other properties we're looking at, but it's early days yet!

They're definitely good value for money. And they feel private too because you go back from the road. I remember moving to a house after living in one like this and it seemed so shallow and I felt really exposed as a result! This one would be a good option if you didn't want to do work to it and hopefully all electrics/boiler etc are new as they're the money eaters

I'm going to start doing guided tours of my three up three down, targeted at those like the OP living in the west country.

Highlights will include:

The cupboard under the stairs: poke your head in if you dare face the Swinging PE bags of DOOM.

The stairs of Please Don't Run Down The Stairs It's Almost a Sheer Drop! You'll break your flipping neck!

The kitchen of Please Close The Bathroom Door I'm Trying To Cook and The Smells Mingle and This Layout Must Contravene Health and Safety

And

The Tiny Third Bedroom of What's the Actual Point Of Putting Another Bedroom Tacked on To The Second Bedroom? And Living In Fear Of Waking Those Sleeping in The Second Bedroom...

It's like Harry Potter World with added grit Grin

Grin Brilliant! Proper tourist trap!

Ah, fond memories of similar when I lived in Yorkshire, especially the almost vertical stairs RuffleCrow describes. They took some getting used to.

Mind you, we're no stranger to almost vertical stairs in many of the miners' cottages down here. My grandad's place down west was treacherous when you were still half asleep in the morning.

Shitsandgigglez · 17/06/2019 22:18

@RuffleCrow oh yes the sheer drop stairs!!!

sackrifice · 17/06/2019 22:22

@eBae

Are you actually looking to move to this area? or looking for a tardis house anywhere?

eBae · 17/06/2019 22:27

Looking at LE or possibly as far as Breaston.

eBae · 17/06/2019 22:29

Those are my 'polars' that I'm working with and creating a circle.

sackrifice · 17/06/2019 22:33

Forget LE, it is rank.

What you want is to go a smidgen over to the West, Shardlow, Aston, Weston, Elvaston, Draycott...

hsegfiugseskufh · 17/06/2019 22:34

Our old house was like this. Looked like a 2 up 2 down from the outside and it was a 2 down but had 4 bedrooms. It was a true tardis house. It was as soulless as this one when we bought it. Someone had tried to renovate it on the cheap stopped halfway through and put it up for sale. It was beautiful when we sold it.

tenlittlecygnets · 17/06/2019 23:06

Op, don’t be embarrassed. You’ve had some pretty shitty replies from people who must live in palaces, they’re so negative Hmm

Chickencellar · 17/06/2019 23:12

Not shitty , nor do you need to live in a palace to point out the obvious. It's a decent family home but it's not uncommon and it's been done up by a builder to sell on.

Casmama · 17/06/2019 23:14

My sister lived in a house like that in long Eaton which was not in as good condition as had been rented out but I think it sold for about £110k about 4 years ago so that actually seems very expensive to me and I would check sold prices locally.
Having said that yes it was spacious and I think would be good for a family - definitely worth a look.

Poppins2016 · 17/06/2019 23:19

Oh crikey, yes, shere drop stairs! I live in an Edwardian 3 up/3 down (similar layout) and in the past six months I've fallen down my stairs from top to bottom twice (thankfully each fall only left bruises)...

Sirrah · 17/06/2019 23:20

They are good family homes, bigger than modern houses, but I think you could find better examples. Keep looking!

Poppins2016 · 17/06/2019 23:22

*sheer drop.

Shere drop is the name of a rather lovely ale... sadly not the reason for my spelling mistake. Grin

Hawkmoth · 17/06/2019 23:27

We're selling a tardis house. Ours doesn't come with a garden though and only has one bathroom, with the garden being the deciding factor. Everyone comments on the size compared to the front, 'deceptively spacious' certainly fits here.

It has worked really well with a family. Being able to separate off downstairs is priceless. However, we did have to buy plug in doorbells and set different tunes to summon the children for meals. Also, because it's so big we haven't had to throw anything away which is going to be tricky when we move.

Overall though, since this layout can give you a lot for your money and provide enough space for moody teens to disappear into, definitely good for families.

I found a Tardis House!
FairyDust92 · 17/06/2019 23:33

@Macca84 😱 you'd be lucky to get a decent 2 bed where I live for that!

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 18/06/2019 02:17

Ah op i think had you said is this a good family home it seems like a bit of blank canvas? I'm looking for a starter home for my young family the answers would have been different.

People were confused by the 'tardis' house because they are just so common. There great little family homes if thats what your looking for. So many of us have lived in this layout and style of home for exactly that reason their great family homes. As i said as a kid i moved from this style of house to a modern box, if i was in your position i'd look at this sort of house too.

And no i dont live in a palace i live in a small one bedroom flat. Just more experience i guess

GreyStreet · 18/06/2019 10:33

I prefer the area closer to Sawley, near the train station. But yes, definitely check out HS2
