Only a few posts left on the first thread of 2019, so here's a new one to get us started.

@Noroof we have gone for oak upstands and I'm only 24 so hope I'm not outdated lol

Noroof · 03/07/2019 13:03

Haha no.. I'm certainly not stylish myself. Is just an association which sounds daft but there you go!

soakedat3 · 03/07/2019 15:26

I like upstands too and I wanted one in our last kitchen but builder said it was old fashioned. I wish I hadn't listened! I think they look clean. What worktop are you having?

avocuddl · 03/07/2019 16:06

I'm going for upstands! Didn't realise they were considered old!

Noroof · 03/07/2019 16:10

We like this...silver oak

soakedat3 · 03/07/2019 16:59

I like that colour of oak @Noroof. We are having something similar in the utility. Laminate though as no money left and it will get wet too much for real wood. The continued splashback looks great in the photo. Would you do that?

Noroof · 03/07/2019 17:20

Yeah that's the plan I think

Noroof · 03/07/2019 17:23

Oh it is laminate... We are on a tight budget and tbh I've never had an issue with laminate...it doesn't stain or scratch.

Mummyshark2018 · 03/07/2019 20:00

Interesting to hear that upstands are considered old fashioned. Never come across them until I started looking at kitchens. We had A small one put in and I think it really sets everything off.

I really like upstands

Noroof · 03/07/2019 20:28

Oh crikey I'll have started a mumsnet rumour about them being old fashioned and it'll be gospel by the end of the day.
I'm going to be singlehandedly responsible for upstand sales plummetingBlushWink

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 03/07/2019 21:30

I am the kiss of death of any trend.
Anything IN normally goes OUT within months of me choosing it.
I could single handedly kill off Grey if I so choose.

So upstands will definitely be OUT by Christmas once we've had ours installed in a few months!

soakedat3 · 03/07/2019 22:16

I like your tap @Mummyshark2018! If only I could convince OH. :(

MyNameIsJane · 04/07/2019 07:13

I like up-stands too.

Tiler is coming today!

I realised on Tuesday evening that the LVT I ordered to be delivered last Friday had not arrived. Eek! I sent them an e-mail and they were rectifying the problem at 7am yesterday. So we are expecting them today. (I had my kind elsewhere with a job interview and a funeral over the last few days so had no room in my head for the house!)

Keep your fingers crossed!

Noroof · 04/07/2019 08:12

My builder is coming tonight to finalise everything. Is there anything I need to ask/check do we think? I'm really nervous as we've never done this sort of thing before!

soakedat3 · 04/07/2019 10:38

@Noroof, if there were any bits that the builder didn't quite understand about the plan then now is the time to see if he has a plan for working it out! Example:My roof pitch! Also clarify what the end state is going to be. I hadn't properly so needed to pull in a bit extra to get floor tiled. See if the quote just leaves you with chipboard floors. Oh and how they are planning to get rid of all the rubbish.

Fingers crossed for your LVT, tiling and interview @MyNameIsJane!

Hi can I join? Our extension started last month but it's all happened very quickly- we only applied for planning mid April! I can hear outside that the scaffolding man has arrived.. Shock

Because of this I'm still deciding on a few things like kitchen layout and there's a time pressure so any advice on layout would be amazing.. We don't like what the architect has drawn.

These are (hopefully attached) the before and after pics

Oh and this is closer to the kitchen layout we like except we dont need radiators or coathooks... I'm just worried about where the food is going to go!
I think maybe a smaller island and then a stand alone larder unit where the radiator is? Or move fridge to where coathooks are? Arg my brain is fried..

@Noroof
Yes to asking about finished state.

I would also ask for an estimated schedule of work so that you roughly know what is happening when. It will help you plan when you need to have decided on kitchen, lighting, radiators etc.

A copy of their insurances.

What time / days people will be working.

Do they need copy of keys.

Ask their planned end date - otherwise it can just keep on going.
Have you agreed the schedule of payments - do not pay anything up front.

Confirm the quote is 'all in' other that things they come across? Eg our foundations cost them more than they had quoted for, they had to take the hit on that as it was their misquote. But, we paid extra for unforseen stuff like electrics that were a mess once we removed the kitchen.

Access to the toilet - are they bringing one, or are you happy for the builders to use yours? We were having ours redone, so I was happy for them to use our downstairs one!

There are no stupid questions, our builder defo smirked at a couple of my stranger questions, but was very happy to answer everything!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 04/07/2019 16:26

@shrugs your layout - I assume you asked architect for that door to the front from the kitchen.
I assume it's the obvious route out to parking or something.
I would definitely put a 1000 larder unit in the radiator corner. We have a similar corner which we have a full depth larder cupboard in our plan. I'll picture up

shrugs · 04/07/2019 17:06

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo yes our house is a weird plot and that door will be the going out to the bins/herb planters/coming in with food shops door only as there'll be a courtyard-type bit then parking to the side of the house.

The front door once porch is on goes on to the road almost straight away so we'd have to walk out on to the road and back into it to come from car to house if that makes sense?

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 04/07/2019 17:32

This is our similar corner @shrugs.
Far door is into utility.
CAD view has 100 cm wide unit behind those double unit doors. Full depth units just come to front of recess.
Inside there will be drawers in base, upper section will have section of matching worktop and have small applicances able to be used in situ with plugs at back of unit.
Upper shelves shallower wall unit depth so that I can see everything and to give air space for coffee machine and toaster that will live in there.
Pretty much all ambient foodstuff will go in there.
Wine rack to left was just to space larder unit away from the corner, would have like something wider but not enough room.
Decided against pocket doors as this isn't going to be a tidy "admire me" pantry!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 04/07/2019 17:35

Forgot the picture!

I love the photos @WhereDoesThisToiletGo

@soakedat3 - LVT arrived, so did the tiler and I reckon I’ve had a lucky escape by not getting the job!

Tiling in progress.

Your tiler is making good progress @MyNameIsJane.
There's something very pleasing about tiling in progress
