Only a few posts left on the first thread of 2019, so here's a new one to get us started.

Ours are here today also. But this is more because they are on catch up after the rain and have foam spray insulation booked for Tues (was to be Mon) which means yesterday and today we've had roofers, builders and electricians. I've been very impressed with the roofer. He has put in very long days. Mind you, yet to go out and look at the work as so much of it has been prep!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 30/06/2019 16:26

That's good to know, I'll keep that in mind

didireallysaythat · 30/06/2019 16:52

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo check out.you council's webpages - they usually state what reasonable working hours for builders (eg 8-12 Saturday). If they work outside these hours then your neighbours can complain to the council. We did building work the same time as our neighbours but got really pissed off with the power tools starting up 7am on Saturdays and Sundays. The neighbours the other side complained to the council so it stopped....

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 30/06/2019 17:25

@didireallysaythat yes, I've already checked Council site a while ago re weekend working.
U less there are weather delays, it's not something I want too much of either as we will want down time as much as the neighbours

didireallysaythat · 30/06/2019 18:50

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo completely understand. It's a right sod when it rains during the week and it's dry at the weekend

soakedat3 · 30/06/2019 19:16

I'm hoping that as it's the first weekend we've really had any noisy work the neighbours will understand. After this it should all hopefully be inside noise and as we're detached they shouldn't hear much.

TheFatberg · 30/06/2019 20:06

It has been frustrating for me on some occasions when it's felt like the only room we can go to while the builders are in is our bedroom. It's not always practical to go out all day. But now I just want things done as quickly as possible, and they're temporarily done in the living room, so it's manageable.

Trying to decide what type of shower to put in. We have a bathroom with shower already and there will be a new shower room upstairs. We could run it off the boiler but it's unlikely that we could run 2 showers at the same time... certainly in our shower at the moment the pressure drops if anyone uses the kitchen tap.
Other option is an electric shower. This also has the advantage of working if the boiler packs in. But they're generally fairly average electric ones aren't they? What wood you do?

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 01/07/2019 20:34

My experience of electric showers in cheap bed and breakfast places is feeble pressure, but I suspect if you pay decent money for a quality one,, they are ok.
A powerful one might need larger electrical cable to cope with the load

blodynmawr · 01/07/2019 20:35

We have an electric shower and it's fine Smile

Loveislandfan · 01/07/2019 20:38

I’m sure using taps etc can still affect electric showers. I know I feel a difference in ours if someone switches the washing machine on or something.

Our shower is soooooo old and honestly it’s ok! I’m used to electric showers as it’s what we always had growing up. We’re replacing our boiler soon and the guys I’ve been speaking to say being able to run two at once comes down to your water pressure more than anything else.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 01/07/2019 20:43

Totally outing, but here are the kitchen plans.
There are a couple of tweaks from this plan but the render for the actual plan doesn't look as nice.
Very boring matt white wall units essential as kitchen is very dark (note tiny window), island is dark blue.
This CAD shows glass splashbacks but we are having dark blue Alusplash

That looks gorgeous! I'm very jealous...I would have loved white but dh said no

MyNameIsJane · 01/07/2019 20:59

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo - are you having profile handles? I am too. I’m also getting the alusplash - probably in silver.

It looks lovely!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 01/07/2019 21:05

@MyNameIsJane the blueberry alusplash is silver on the reverse so we're really having the same thing!
Yes to profile handles (didn't know that was what they were called!) as the varying orientation of random handles in my existing kitchen has always annoyed me

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 01/07/2019 21:08

There should be quite a bit of left over alusplash as we need 2 lengths and I was going to see if installer could cut panels to fit in back of the white open shelves on the right hand side

WorrisomeHeart · 01/07/2019 21:13

Oh @wheredoes that looks brilliant!!

@Noroof I would tend to avoid electric showers as the ones I’ve experienced have been totally awful. We are replacing the water main and the boiler and the gas main to try and get a decent pressure to our new loft shower. Possibly overkill...

I am in a kitchen handle meltdown. I thought I’d chosen what I wanted (rectangular cups) but that was way back when we were going for a blue DIYK option. Now with the pale grey Wickes I am totally unsure. Plus DH has just thrown into the mix that he ‘doesn’t want anything shiny because of fingerprints’ 🙄 There are too many options and it’s hard to envisage them on the units. I think we might have to go to another showroom just to look at the handles.

MyNameIsJane · 01/07/2019 21:24

On another note, we have the tiler coming this week, and the flooring happens next week too. So excited!

soakedat3 · 01/07/2019 22:03

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo your kitchen visuals look fantastic. The alusplash on the open units is a great idea and will add that extra touch I think.

Loveislandfan · 01/07/2019 22:06

@WorrisomeHeart what’s your pressure now and what are you aiming for?

northernruth · 01/07/2019 22:19

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo the kitchen looks ace. I'm no closer to deciding between Wren and the Naked Kitchens option, I need to put a cold cloth on my head tomorrow

@Noroof an electric shower will be fine if you get a high KW one and have a mains pressure cold water supply. You will indeed need a good power supply. The only way to get more than one shower working off mains hot water is to have a pressurised systme (this is what we are having) but even then the pressure will drop if more than one shower is run at a time. We are using our existing combi boiler to run the unvented cylinder

My unco operative window man rang me today with a price for flush casement uPVC windows of £5,400 compared with £4,500 for bog standard, so I'm happy with that and he's coming tomorrow to measure up and take a deposit.

Scaffolders turned up tonight at 7.15 to put scaffold up on the front of the house for that to be re-rendered - they said they would be an hour and they finished at 9 ffs

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 01/07/2019 22:27

Kitchen is all perfect on paper but still a long way off until we get the extension built.
But I'm going to print and laminate these images to keep me going thru the coming chaos

Noroof · 01/07/2019 23:16

Yes I want those profile handles as well... in a brushed steel I think. Anyone seen where to get them?

MyNameIsJane · 02/07/2019 05:21

@noroof www.kitchenfittingsdirect.com/gb/shop/products?i=115610&c=6467&n=Rear-fixed-polished-chrome-profiles-handles

This is where I will get mine from.

WorrisomeHeart · 02/07/2019 05:21

@Loveislandfan the builder reckons it’s about 12-13 at the moment and is aiming to get it into the high teens or 20ish. I should caveat, these numbers mean nothing to me, I just said I wanted a boiler etc that meant we could run two showers at once 😂
