“Split level lounge / dining room” 😵

On holiday in Cornwall and this caught our eye. Not our corner of the country unfortunately but a lot of house / land for your money.

In my 50 + years on this planet, however, I have never come across a split level living room / dining room!

I came across one of these in my recent house hunt! Didn't like it or buy it though....

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/06/2019 17:07

I thought it would be a 70's house, I would love this.

Bumpdebump · 04/06/2019 17:09

Love it!

Prinstress · 04/06/2019 17:09

I never knew I needed a split level living/dining room til now... or maybe a split level bed/bath

BlueSkiesLies · 04/06/2019 17:13

Common in the 70s and common in houses on hills!

BackforGood · 04/06/2019 17:22

Really ?
I don't think they are that uncommon.
That's a lot of house and land for the money, in such a lovely part of the world.

DrDentyst · 04/06/2019 17:27

It's not that shocking surely? It's more shocking to me, being in a part of the country where £480k would buy a 3 bed terrace on a council estate, that you can get 4 beds, 0.3 acres and a swimming pool for that money!

JoJoSM2 · 04/06/2019 17:43

Given how much the British like properties with stairs, it surely is a bonus Grin

TraffordTansy · 04/06/2019 18:14

I grew up in a road of 70s houses like these, I thought all houses were like this until I was about ten 😂

lastqueenofscotland · 04/06/2019 20:36

I sort of like it

Closetlibrarian · 04/06/2019 20:39

Love a split level living room/ dining. Nearly as good as a sunken living room (a la Don Draper's NY apt in Mad Men). But I love 50s/60s/70s architecture

PurpleWithRed · 04/06/2019 20:43

Oh oh oh what a wonderful property! Reminds me of my youth, when all my smart friends lived in places like these (with warm air heating! and swirly carpets AND wallpaper AND ceilings! and a BIDET!) and I lived in a falling down freezing cold 16th century cottage with beams and open fires and stuff.

Hoppinggreen · 04/06/2019 20:45

We kind of had one in the late 80s/early 90s
My Dad built it, no idea why. We had a lounge with a dining room through an arch but the front door opened into the dining room so my Dad built a sort of platform for the dining table and chairs with wooden spindles around it
It looked ok

notacooldad · 04/06/2019 20:47

I would love to go to have a go at modernising that house. It certainly needs updating but on the whole I love it. Too far forme to travel to work though!

Janleverton · 04/06/2019 21:07

My PILs had a house with a sitting room similar to thrupennybits one - lots of wood like that. Higher level dining room off the kitchen, gallery looking down on the (massive) lounge.

Rather more Dresden pottery and nick nacks.

JustTheCrowsAndTheBeef · 04/06/2019 23:15

I would love to get my hands on that house. The games room! With a bar!

WhatHaveIFound · 04/06/2019 23:22

It was common in the 70s. We lived in a house with one once but it was far more tastefully decorated. Ours had two full length open steps down so it was great for chilled out parties (lots of seating spaces). Less good for toddlers learning to walk!

PazRaz10 · 05/06/2019 09:46

This looks just like my Grandparents house when I was growing up - very common for houses on hills!
I quite like it. It's open plan, but with clear division!

Winenotttea · 05/06/2019 20:29

That house in Maidstone is amazing!

kizkiz · 05/06/2019 22:08

I live in one now. Really like it.
We have the lower part as the adult living room and the higher part is the dining/kids area

moonrises · 05/06/2019 23:35

Didn't 'George and Mildred' have a split level lounge / dining room)?

ChicCroissant · 05/06/2019 23:46

I'm over 50 and as soon as I saw the thread title, I knew it would be 70's style! They did like a raised room and/or a sunken bath Grin

I'd say that many steps were unusual though, more often it would just be one or two steps so not very split level at all really

pallisers · 05/06/2019 23:49

My best friend had one in the 70s. Her father was a builder and the house was massive and state of the art 1970s (probably torn down now).
