Howdens kitchen in £950k house

Would a Howdens kitchen in a house valued at £950k be acceptable? Or would you expect a Smallbone kitchen for that.

House is in Bucks.

Depends on the kitchen. Is it solid wood? What type of handles?

How big Ian the house?

My friend lives in a £900k terrace in London with a Howdens kitchen. House is crazily proved due to location not dus to the standard of the finish.

We’ve had pogenpohl (which began to fall apart in 3 years) and hand built by “artisan” maker on the Roseland (which looked old and tired in the same sort of time). Cost fortunes. Best kitchen we ever had was Cooke&Lewis from B&Q. £9,000 including Siemens and Samsung appliances. Looks good as new 9 years later.

Howdens are all time served joiners and cabinet makers, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it. You really don’t always get what you think you’re paying for.

sue51 · 25/05/2019 11:05

I would want quartz, marble or oak worktops and good quality appliances. I wouldn't be concerned about the make of units. If the kitchen was shabby I would expect that to be reflected in the asking price.

Cobblersandhogwash · 25/05/2019 11:57

So I was just flicking through their catalogue and I like the look of these. Photos attached.

So you think it could be okay with top quality work surfaces and good appliances?

House is five bed house in the countryside.

Acceptable to who?

Cobblersandhogwash · 25/05/2019 12:01

All doors/units appear to be made of chipboard or MDF. Is that crap?

To a buyer who is going to spend £975k on a house.

Do you like the kitchen? If so, who cares where it comes from

Landfilly · 25/05/2019 12:04

Are you looking to sell it? Or is this for you?

We live in a house around the same value and our kitchen looks like a Poggenpohl one but is actually partly Ikea, partly some old bits of wood we got a joiner to do up for us, and an expensive worktop.

I think dovetail joints and solid wood thousands of pounds kitchens are a total waste of money as most people want to update their kitchens every 10 years or so.

MenuPlant · 25/05/2019 12:05

Is fine

MenuPlant · 25/05/2019 12:06

Howden are solid units aren't they not flat pack

We have recent doors from them seem good quality

Reallybadidea · 25/05/2019 12:06

Bit confused why someone is going to spend £975K on a house valued at £950K.

longearedbat · 25/05/2019 12:06

I don't think there is anything wrong with a Howdens kitchen. They always seem pretty solid to me. I think the design and finish are more important. I have seen some very expensive kitchens (according to the owners!) and tbh they don't look any better than the more regular brands. . To me it's more important that a kitchen flows and is easy to work in and keep clean.

superram · 25/05/2019 12:07

I have a £950k house and a howdens kitchen, quartz worktop and neff appliances (they aren’t all that). I like it, designer called spencer based in Paddington was excellent.

Cobblersandhogwash · 25/05/2019 13:34

@Reallybadidea typo. Soooooo helpful, aren't you??

With the right counters and appliances that should look pretty good to a prospective buyer.

PlatypusPie · 25/05/2019 14:17

We put a Howdens kitchen into our house because they had some particularly tall cabinets available in a style wanted. Granite tops, fancy taps and handles and the effect was very good - caused my interior design friend to do a double take when we told her how much, or how little, we paid. Has worn very well indeed.

jenthelibrarian · 25/05/2019 14:21

Tbh, I'm not that keen on Howdens.
We used their units for our new utility room but, as recommended by the builder, got a Burbidge kitchen which we are very pleased with and still looks immaculate 2 years later.
It was suggested as a compromise between Howdens and some shockingly spendy hand-built job varnished with the tears of organic unicorns, which I flatly refused to pay for.
I also live in Bucks, in an overpriced house .

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/05/2019 14:23

Nobody will know unless you tell them.

3luckystars · 25/05/2019 14:25

My friends house is worth that and her kitchen is from Ikea.

Bluebluered · 25/05/2019 14:28

I think the kitchen and the house look shit.

Waterdropsdown · 25/05/2019 14:33

About to exchange on our sale of house for a lot more than £950k and it’s got Ikea kitchen units. Nice worktops but still Ikea units. No issues selling and no one mentioned the units to the agent.

chuckyeggtimestwo · 25/05/2019 14:33

i have had a cooke and lewis b&q shaker style kiitchen for ten years - still looks really good. This is in a £1.2 million house! I think if you go for a classic style kitchen it’ll age better.
also my friend had a poggenpohl kitchen costing £££ and when i inspected it after her house was finished found it was made exactly the same as mine - absolutely the same inside when u opened the doors/doors some sort of coated mdf etc.
I think theres a lot of ‘smoke and mirrors’ surrounding kitchens - people think they are getting something better the more they spend but unless its solid oak or something most kitchen doors/carcasses are made the same way.

AuntieMarys · 25/05/2019 14:34

We had an amazing kitchen in a £1.4 million house 10 years ago...fitted by a small independent company cheaper than any major kitchen store. No problem when we sold it....in fact it was one of the best things in the house!

Freshbreadandbutter · 25/05/2019 14:38

Blueblerd how do you know the kitchen and the house look shit? Hmm
