Somewhere affordable in South Manchester but nice area.... Too much to ask?

Hi,

Looking for some advice on areas if you guys can help me please. My partner and I plus bump & 2 year old are wanting to move to South Manchester but I only have a budget of max £260k and we need a 3 bed. I'm priced out of the obvious places people suggest like Didsbury, Chorlton, Altrincham etc. but I was hoping you could suggest some areas that are more affordable and nice for a growing family? We're not from Manchester so don't have that valuable knowledge.

This isn't our forever home but our 'next 5 years' type home!

Thabks 😊

Maybe Urmston or Flixton? Is this a job move?

albus55 · 21/05/2019 09:34

Urmston, Flixton, Stretford, Davyhulme - Great locations, great transport links, great schools. All benefiting from investments and new indi places opening constantly.

Peachi82 · 21/05/2019 09:38

Instead of buying somewhere in Manchester, we moved from Didsbury (rented) to a nice area in Warrington. We're here now for just under 2 years and life is so much better than in Manchester.
I take the train into Manchester for work and it's not a problem and so much better than the busses.

Inch5h3l · 21/05/2019 10:19

Thank you for those suggestions, I'll look in to them! My job is in Wilmslow and I drive so no issue there (I work from home atm) & partner works in the city centre so would need close proximity to tram / train lines.

Sale?

I'm from there (live down south, now) and it's got good schools and good transport links (tram at Sale/Brooklands/Dane Road) and buses to Manchester (the 263 and the 41, off the top of my head). A quick look on Rightmove has some 3-bed houses in Sale within your budget.

userxx · 21/05/2019 12:25

Sale is nice but all the houses I've seen are over £270K. Timperley, Sale and Altrincham are all so expensive now.

Hermagsjesty · 21/05/2019 12:31

You could get a family home in parts of Withington on that budget - still near good schools abc amenities

wowfudge · 21/05/2019 12:44

I suggest you look in Bramhall, Cheadle, Hayley with your budget and a commute to Wilmslow.

wowfudge · 21/05/2019 12:45

Gatley, not Hayley!

parrotfashionista · 21/05/2019 12:47

Marple has two train stations into Manchester- also Romiley has a station. Nice villages too.

The new road from high lane can get you to Winslow in 20 mins too x

wowfudge · 21/05/2019 12:50

Getting to the new road at High Lane from Marple is not as straightforward as it should be - I've got a colleague who does that and there are frequent hold ups.

I live in Chorlton Park in a 3 bed valued at your budget. We’re near great schools and there are lots of families around us.

However commuting on the A34 to Wilmslow from here might be a bit painful every day. Macclesfield is beautiful and you do get more for your money there.

Good luck!

RedToothBrush · 21/05/2019 20:57

If you fancy looking at somewhere out of the box, try looking at Glazebrook. Its on the direct line into Manchester and commutable to Wilmslow.

It's more rural and a lot less obvious than a lot of places because its in Warrington rather than Manchester. But that has merits in its own right.

RaymondReddington · 21/05/2019 21:13

Perhaps out of your area but a consideration is Congleton, Cheshire. Train line to Manchester in 40 minutes which stops at Wilmslow; but the drive to Wilmslow is also about 25-30 minutes.

Houses much cheaper as not in the city centre but obviously a lot further out.

Just a thought.

lastqueenofscotland · 21/05/2019 21:21

Withington is fullll of students.
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-71776294.html 250k in timperley

Liverbird77 · 21/05/2019 21:46

People will probably be along to argue with this, but some parts of levenshulme are worth considering.

lastqueenofscotland · 21/05/2019 21:51

this is in whalley range www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-61669866.html
Spitting distance of Alexandra park, near WH grammar, st bedes, whalley range high and chorlton high, not too far from Manchester high school for girls

wowfudge · 21/05/2019 22:45

Congleton is sprawl of new builds and they're still building. There's a real risk you'd find it hard to sell in a few years' time.

That Whaley Range house is tiny, even with a loft bedroom. Friends have a very similar house and the living room is cramped with just two in it.

Thank you so much for all of this information, really useful and I appreciate it! :)

Have you looked in Wilmslow? Whilst your budget does outprice you for most 3 beds there are a few on the market within budget.

This is on the summerfields estate in north Wilmslow?

Larchwood Drive, Wilmslow, SK9
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-71233981.html

On Rightmove there are currently 118 3 bed properties within 3 miles of Wilmslow under £260k. (Within 3 miles will be Handforth, heald green, Cheadle Hulme, bramhall, poynton which are all desirable areas)

Not sure it's necessary for you to branch out so far if you don't want to?

userxx · 22/05/2019 16:01

@lastqueenofscotland - might go and have a nosy at that myself! Never seen a bathroom with such big windows. It could be lovely with a load of money chucked at it.

TraffordTansy · 22/05/2019 16:17

Perhaps out of your area but a consideration is Congleton, Cheshire. Train line to Manchester in 40 minutes which stops at Wilmslow; but the drive to Wilmslow is also about 25-30 minutes.

I think Congleton is on the Stoke to Manchester line, like Macclesfield, Wilmslow is on the Crewe to Manchester line. I don't think you can go directly from Congleton to Wilmslow by train.

SheChoseDown · 22/05/2019 16:36

We left didsbury, bought in Cheshire. Much happier, safer and friendlier out here. (car insurance down to a third of what it was!)
You can get a house in East Didsbury for 260k.
Try Cheadle ir Gatley, technically it's not Manchester but it's 5 mins from didsbury

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 22/05/2019 16:47

Marple traffic is very bad at normal rush hour times. To get to wilmslow by train you would need to go into Manchester first as you can’t connect in Stockport. That might be too much of a faff. Ideally look for somewhere on the Stockport line (or Manchester airport) if you want to commute by train.
