Cormar Sensation Twist carpets and pet cats

Hi everyone. Just had a beautiful Damson Twist carpet laid in our Lounge/Diner, Hallway, Stairs and Landing, having been advised it is very good for standing up to cats, who like to dig and claw at it, in preference to the multitude of scratching posts we have around the same area. Admittingly aware this carpet is brand new, and subject to losing loose tufts for a while, we have been constantly keeping an eye on our two lovely cats. Nightmare!! They are having a field day with it!! Each time one of them attacks the carpet, they get results, and we are left picking up the removed tufts, complete with a little bit of the hessian backing glue attached. So far no bald patches because of the luxuriousness of the pile. It is a lovely soft carpet!! Hopefully they will get used to it. Has anyone had similar problems please??

Bumping this thread for you, OP. We have wooden floors (and no cats!) so not much use to you, but someone out there might be able to help. Smile

I don’t think any carpet stands up to cats, were currently putting hard flooring everywhere. Even our stairs are being done.

I would restrict them to the kitchen. Of course they will have a go at it if they are that way inclined. A firm, loud "NO" stopped our cats. We could not afford for everything to be ruined so, curtailing where they can go is the only answer.

I have encountered a carpet scratcher in my previous cat when we moved & she had to stay in for a few weeks.

3 solutions that absolutely worked in combination:

  1. firstly put their scratching posts/get new scratching posts & place on the area of carpet the cat's are favouring to scratch
  1. buy dried catnip herb & sprinkle on the scratching posts to encourage use of those instead of the carpet
  1. buy some Felliway spray & spray generously on the area of carpet the cat is scratching (if there isn't a post on top of it) - this really worked on mine but you have to re-spray to top up when they scratch again.

Good luck - this really worked for me

Thanks everyone for your responses. It has given me plenty of options to try. Will update when I have tried some for a while.
