what did you compromise on?

Just went to see a house which was perfect except for a) small bedrooms, and b) traffic noise from a nearby A road. These might not be deal breakers because the good things about it are far more numerous, but just pondering. What did you compromise on?

Yes and my answer is nothing which is just as valid as anyone else’s response. Funnily enough I don’t have a swimming pool but that wasn’t on my list of musts!!!

Bluntness100 · 10/05/2019 21:39

Good for you honey. I'm sure that's very helpful to the op.

Off you trot.

Copperandtod · 10/05/2019 21:43

It’s a shame you had to compromise on your property bluntness but no need to be bitter towards those who did not

escapingtothecountry · 10/05/2019 21:44

A view and public transport within walking distance. But we got 15 acres in return, so I’m not going to complain

mimibunz · 10/05/2019 21:47

Size. Small terraced but in a fabulous location.

Bluntness100 · 10/05/2019 21:50

To be fair I said I compromised on location but I love it now, simply it was further out than I'd have liked due to my daughters school, which was for the last year of her education.

I have however compromised previously on things that didn't work out Ok. Clearly I'm not bitter about it as I no longer live in those properties but sold for a large profit.

The simple point is, if someone asks what you compromised on, then the answer of we never have, is less than useful.

But go you.

Justajot · 10/05/2019 21:52

Price and we didn't get an open plan kitchen/diner.

Previous house we compromised on road noise and garden. It was also badly connected - country roads and no where near a station.

Shelbybear · 10/05/2019 21:55

Location and garden. I wanted south facing garden. It was a must. I had this in previous property and it was fab. Location was my least favourite in about 5mile radius.

Viewed house thought it was nice but ruled it out because of that. 5 weeks later and we were getting desperate, hadn't seen any houses we liked. We were moving in a few weeks and no where to go. Went back to see the house and...thought it was even more lovely and couldn't believe I'd ruled it out.

The garden gets the sun all day till about 4ish then starts to shade although starts to come through a gap between my house and neighbour again at the back of the garden so we have sun all day till about 7ish.

Hardly get good weather to sit in it anyway!!!

Location is fine as we both have cars. It's about 2mile from nearest train station but houses near the station are tens of thousands more expensive!

Ivegotthree · 10/05/2019 21:57

Traffic would be a dealbreaker for me. Don't do it.

perhapstomorrow · 10/05/2019 21:59

Kitchen. Fell in love with rest of house and garden. Good location but kitchen is small and the conservatory is our dining room. However, there is great potential to put in a large extension. Just need to save a bit to afford it.

Ariela · 10/05/2019 22:07

Too much land, was a struggle to keep up when out to work 24/7, but that balanced out when we kept daughter's ponies a home., now we have more time (semi-retired) so can keep up!

DontPanic42 · 10/05/2019 22:11

Garden size, much smaller than we would have wanted, and the outside of the house is pretty ugly. However the inside is very pretty, great size bedrooms and most importantly for us, perfect location

TokyoSushi · 10/05/2019 22:12

Our bedroom is quite small, our last one was massive, I absolutely love it, it feels very cosy and safe, there are built in wardrobes so no storage issues.

Our 4th bedroom is very small, but it's only used for drying washing and DS' xbox, all friends & family live close enough that they wouldn't stay over.

We're near a 'busy at rush hour' road, I've lived near roads before, absolutely fine for us.

House is fab, detached, loads of space, we really love it. If it had been further into the estate and away from the road it would have been well over budget!

PinkOboe · 10/05/2019 22:19

Character. Excellent location. Great garden, drive, good size. Ugly as sin.

motortroll · 10/05/2019 22:51

My new house doesn't have a utility room.

I'm still a tiny bit gutted but I traded it for bigger reception rooms and more toilets!!

bebeboeuf · 10/05/2019 23:06

Compromised on practicality in layout to get the characterful Victorian house we wanted

CremeEgg2019 · 10/05/2019 23:18

The whole house was a compromise really. We bought essentially a bit of land with some dodgy bricks on it in a highly sought after bit of London. It’s truly hideous, but we don’t have to look at it - our neighbours do Grin

yomellamoHelly · 10/05/2019 23:31

State of the house. (Big time!) Location great. Overall size of house great. Have spent 8 years missing the loveliness of our last place, though we're finally getting there......

bluechameleon · 10/05/2019 23:40

Parking. Garden is also pretty small. But the location is really good and the house is a good size. Overall it was the right decision.

Bluesheep8 · 11/05/2019 07:48

Unadopted road. It ticked every other box plus a utility room that wasn't on the list. DP really hates the pot holey scruffy 'road' but it means we have a peaceful, tucked away location and off road parking so it's a compromise worth making.

Beebumble2 · 11/05/2019 08:00

Downsized, ( only 2 of us) so tricky from the start. Compromised on downstairs WC, but have pp for extension to put one in. Just need to capture a builder.

Upside, period house sympathetically restored, fantastic village position, large garden.

Laska2Meryls · 11/05/2019 08:19

Ours is a 60s chalet bungalow in yellow fake stone brick which I have never liked and the two upstairs bedrooms are small as they are in roof space, but downstairs is huge , light open plan with lovely separate dining room that I had never considered as a must but we use it all the time and we have the huge south facing garden we wanted.also well back from the road with a nice front garden. And I only ever noticed the ugly outside yellow brick when I drive in !

WalkAwaySugarbear · 11/05/2019 08:26

Small house, ugly 70s exterior near busy major dual carriageway. On a busy B road.
It works for us in so many other ways that we're struggling to move.

Neron · 11/05/2019 08:31

In the purchasing process, but if it goes through we compromised on having a north facing garden and having to drive and park at the station for my slightly longer city commute.
It does mean that we get a massive detached bungalow, in a very quiet area with only 7 other neighbours. Compared to where we live now, it will be completely worth it

SparkyTheCat · 11/05/2019 08:31

After years of renting a shoebox, space was our priority. Also, as ftb we wanted to make the most of the stamp duty exemption and buy the biggest house we could, so in theory we don't have to move again. At cost of a slightly longer commute and slightly less nice area, we have achieved this. Since we bought this house the council have announced a big upgrade to the local shopping centre, and new bars etc have started opening locally, so hopefully we called that bit right.
