Clay or pale grey for new kitchen cabinets?!

squeezeoflemon · 05/05/2019 08:06

I was totally sold on pale grey (d&d blackened or dimpse) for our new kitchen cabinets-they will be hand painted from handmade kitchens direct.

However too much Pinterest scrolling has got me wondering about clay! It looks so soothing and warm...

Worktops will be white Carrara quartz, brass hardware / pendants and brass tap. I'll be adding pos of colour with accessories/cushions/plants etc...

Help!! Which do you prefer?

I love the clay, my kitchen is about 8 years old now and is oyster hand painted. It’s lovely but I am always looking at new ideas and I have seen this new colour lots and saved it to Pinterest.

Go for it!

I don't know but I'll have the same dilemma soon... I was going grey but are your carpets in your house a grey or clay ( beiges ) palette ? Other things ?
My house is open plan with the lounge so I have grey sofas and stuff so will probably go grey . If it's a wooden kitchen can it be painted again later on. ?

Iris1654 · 05/05/2019 08:12

THE gRey is cold and imho dated.
Im about to repaint my kitchen and have been looking at clay.

squeezeoflemon · 05/05/2019 08:15

Thanks both! The floors downstairs are wood so could go either way...it's a new house and I'm having the same dilemma for the wall colours now-whether to go cool or warm.

The front room is north facing so would prob be best in a warmer palette but the kitchen / diner is south facing so can take either. I was initially really drawn to the pale greys having only had warm neutrals in the past, but now I'm wavering!

Should have mentioned it's a new house and we are completely redecorating...

The grey I think looks more modern than the cream but that's just my opinion. Both are nice.

Lost5stone · 05/05/2019 08:21

I would definitely go clay. I think it's less likely to date

shalalala · 05/05/2019 08:23

I'm having the same dilemma. What clay colour are you thinking of? I'm considering either F&B Dimity? Is originally thought I wanted Blackened

Lydia55y · 05/05/2019 08:26

We’ve had grey but gone f&b Cornforth White as I found it warmer. Maybe a middle ground?

squeezeoflemon · 05/05/2019 08:28

@shalalala I'll take a look at dimnity -thank you! Skimming stone is a possibility, lots of that on Instagram-but I looks different in every pic (as they often do) I haven't made much progress with colour research yet but that'll be a job for today!

@squeezeoflemon we are meant to be starting painting this morning! I was thinking of Skimming Stone but then a friend told me it looked grey in her bedroom. Tricky!

Serin · 05/05/2019 08:37

We have grey and are getting quite bored with it. We are repainting a very soft green.

JaneEyre07 · 05/05/2019 08:39

I work in interiors, and have noticed that all the main fabric houses have gone from grey grey and more grey to lots of bold deep colours... it's lovely to see, to be honest. We've got a clay colour in our living room and it's so easy to live with.

RocketSurgery · 05/05/2019 08:39

Grey is a bit tired now. I’m having the same dilemma atm. I really want to get our kitchen done in a very dark blue but know it will date horribly.

123rd · 05/05/2019 08:40

I think grey is in its way out. Clay does looks warmer.

userxx · 05/05/2019 08:42

I'd go with clay. I love grey but I think it's starting to look a bit dated now. I was going to go with grey on my walls but am sticking with a warmer cream.

Summersunshine2 · 05/05/2019 08:46

I would go clay. Surely Grey has had its day by now?

squeezeoflemon · 05/05/2019 08:59

I'm so heartened by all the votes for clay-my instinct is to go with that, it's just such a turnaround after being so set on grey. My only concern is that I still want it to look modern rather than country (which is what I would usually associate with clay)-I guess it's all about finding the right shade.

If anyone has any recommendations for clay paint colours they would be gratefully received! Our painter will use Mylands on the cabinets but they can colour match to any shade

@RocketSurgery for a time I was also fixed on having a Hague blue island but eventually decided I would commit to the light and airy look. I do LOVE to the dark kitchens though-I try to skip quickly past those pics as it sends my head into a spin!

@JaneEyre07 I totally agree we the bold deep colours-nothing worse than an insipid sea of different greys. I really want to bring lots of colour in through upholstery/art/accessories etc and it's great to see so many bright colours in the shops 😊

We've got these in our living room....

The white clay looks a really deep clay colour at night and in artificial light, but in daylight a warm clay with a slight silvery hue. We tried a deeper one but it was too dark at night.

catinboots99 · 05/05/2019 09:39

Grey is on it's way out, if not gone already.

The Clay is a timeless colour.

squeezeoflemon · 05/05/2019 10:34

Thanks so much for all the replies!

Do others think it can look modern or will it be a bit more of a countryish look?!

I had your dilemma exactly, I even posted here about it!

After £60 on matchpots I chose Shaded White. It is utterly gorgeous, after a little wobble at the start I am so pleased with it.

I have cream cooker and small appliances and clay lights from Jim Lawrence. I am having Andromede granite.

I have a Hague Blue larder cupboard.

2nd choice was Oak Apple from Fired Earth which is a mushroomy grey but it clashed with the cooker!

@squeezeoflemon I've been testing them this morning. Here are: Dimnity, Skimming Stone and Blackened
