Clay or pale grey for new kitchen cabinets?!

squeezeoflemon · 05/05/2019 08:06

I was totally sold on pale grey (d&d blackened or dimpse) for our new kitchen cabinets-they will be hand painted from handmade kitchens direct.

However too much Pinterest scrolling has got me wondering about clay! It looks so soothing and warm...

Worktops will be white Carrara quartz, brass hardware / pendants and brass tap. I'll be adding pos of colour with accessories/cushions/plants etc...

Help!! Which do you prefer?

You could also try Drop Cloth.

Bluesheep8 · 05/05/2019 12:15

Another vote for clay. My kitchen is painted in f and b skimming stone. I love it.

If you’re worried about the country look then I think just think about your accessories and fittings carefully. I don’t think the clay colour itself suggests country

MountainEagle · 05/05/2019 12:43

I like the grey. I had a grey kitchen installed a few months ago. Dark green and blue are also trendy but I was worried they’d date whereas grey is more neutral.

ImTheRealHFella · 05/05/2019 12:45

My kitchen is 'mussel' from DIY kitchens.

It's a very neutral tone: neither cream or grey and I love it. It looks amazing with both wood and stone.

Walls are f&b ammonite and light blue.

FrogFairy · 05/05/2019 13:38

I love the clay. Your choice of worktop, handles, backsplash, light fittings etc will make it traditional or modern looking.

Pixiefee · 05/05/2019 18:04

Hi ImTheRealHFella Would F&B 'Shaded White' in an adjacent room go with your Mussel kitchen?? I'm keen on getting that kitchen myself!

ImTheRealHFella · 05/05/2019 20:01

Shaded white is very close to the mussel colour from what I can gather looking at internet colour pics.

NoHolidaysforyou · 05/05/2019 23:43

Clay looks more country although timeless whereas grey seems more modern. It depends on what you want.

Clay - every man and his dog has grey.

FurrySlipperBoots · 06/05/2019 01:50

Clay!

Grey is very 'Yesterday'. It's such an ugly cold colour anyway, I can't think why it was ever popular.

julensaor · 06/05/2019 02:08

clay is just a slight step off magnolia. Very nineties and very country. But warmer than the grey you had picked. Don't be afraid of different colours, Hague-blue sounds much nicer than grey or clay. And because it is a fairly muted blue, just as easy to accessorise with.

@Movinghouseatlast that looks gorgeous-I remember your other thread actually-the colour blends beautifully with the cooler in that pic! It's going to be stunning when finished 😊

@shalalala oooh amazing thank you so much for sharing...it def between the skimming stone and blackened for me. What do you think you're going to go for? I'm just so nervous to end up with anything that resembles magnolia 😱

@Bluesheep8 thanks so much for posting the pic, what a gorgeous kitchen! Does the tone of skimming stone change much depending on the light? It looks quite cool in that pic, which is what I'm after-a cooler shade so it's not too magnolia-y. I get the keys in a few weeks so will be able to go to town with my tester pots, but I'm too impatient!

squeezeof yes it does change, the kitchen is west facing so has most light in the late afternoon. The cupboards in the utility room are painted in the same colour and often look a different shade. Our lounge is also done in skimming stone (you can tell I'm a fan) and it looks completely different in there. If you wanted slightly more depth, drop cloth would be a good suggestion, as a pp said.

Bluesheep8 · 06/05/2019 08:08

Pic of utility room - actually even the two cupboards in the photo look different shades but I like that...

I have Dulux Bleached Lichen (mostly the 2 and 3 shades I think) in my kitchen. It looks amazing. It's a true "clay" colour rather than a magnolia and has grey and green undertones. I tried all the F&B and Fired Earth colours but this was without a doubt the best. I have ammonite, skimming stone, cornforth white etc in other rooms in the house but I love Bleached Lichen.

squeezeoflemon · 06/05/2019 08:40

Thanks so much @Bluesheep8 I will have to get the tester pots out-hopefully it will look as lovely as it does in yours 😊

@t1mum3 oooh bleached lichen looks amazing, I'll definitely try that one too-thanks so much!
