is this nice or awful? Too much going on? Slate roof, cream wall, green door and solid oak porch. And what to do?

is it all one house?

bluebellation · 27/04/2019 11:34

I think the porch is out of keeping with the rest of the house; it might blend in better if it was painted to match.

Cloudtree · 27/04/2019 11:35

personally Im not keen on the colour at all. Too sandy. And the front of the house needs to be the same all the way across. If you painted it all a light ivory it would look much better.

Awrite · 27/04/2019 11:35

I love the door. It goes with the cream walls. Not sure about the porch. Can't articulate why though.

RuggyPeg · 27/04/2019 11:37

Is it your house? Yes, is it all one house or mid terrace? Have you just had it done and are now unsure? Can you change it? Are you selling it? What's your budget, if it's yours?

I mean, it looks perfectly ok, nice even but what happens next depends on the answers to the above?!

ShirleyPhallus · 27/04/2019 11:40

The porch looks faux-medieval, lose that and it’s finr otherwise

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 27/04/2019 11:41

Me too.

I think it's the wrong style for the house maybe? Also it looks unbalanced/uneven in some way - I think the posts and bases at the front , but not at the back, make it look as though its just been leant against the house or just tagged on as an afterthought (which I know it has but it shouldn't look like that IYSWIM)

Iris1654 · 27/04/2019 11:43

I think it’s looks wrong as the house isn’t symmetrical. The hard landscaping isn’t helping either, it needs big flower beds below the windows and pots growing to soften everything.

I agree with the post above, more info needed please.

TeeBee · 27/04/2019 11:44

I'd be tempted to paint the house white. You have white, cream and brown competing with each other. I think painting it white would draw more attention to the roof, which is nice and knock back the windows. Then put some nice pots with tonnes of colour to the left to balance out the heaviness of the porch.

SwedishEdith · 27/04/2019 11:44

Porch is too big and out of keeping.

Snowglobes · 27/04/2019 11:45

cloudtree yes all one house. Unfortunately it’s cost a flipping fortune to render and paint all the existing brick work as you’d also have to do the sides and then the back. But it probably would look better all the same colour, and ivory.
I can’t put my finger on it either awrite. It’s a gorgeous solid oak porch that I’m very reluctant to paint and I doubt any colour would help make better whatever is wrong with it.

I think I would render the whole thing in a lighter colour and change the roof of the porch to match the roof on the bay window. I'm not sure about the oak posts either. I like the green door and the windows though. Is it 1930s?

TeeBee · 27/04/2019 11:46

Don't forget that as the oak ages, it will look more silver and will match your roof better.

ropewalk · 27/04/2019 11:46

I'd fill it in and make it a proper vestibule

JessieMcJessie · 27/04/2019 11:47

Yes, porch is completely the wrong style for the house. In terms of what to do, depends on budget. The house would be quite a blank canvas without the porch and you could maybe build a sleek modern enclosed porch instead.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 27/04/2019 11:47

Get rid of the porch. It is cheap looking. Paint the yellow ivory and the door black.

BlueMerchant · 27/04/2019 11:50

Porch doesn't seem to go with the house somehow. Maybe some big oak planters or window boxes might help tie it in?
Love the green door normally but maybe if it was oak too that may help?
I'd paint house all the sandy colour.

JessieMcJessie · 27/04/2019 11:50

Presuming your “it’s cost” is a typo for “it’d cost” and you didn’t do the rendering/painting of the middle bit yourselves. Could you just lighten up the paint on the central bit? Might the porch look better with plants up and over it, going for a roses round the door look?

FraggleRocking · 27/04/2019 11:50

I think the whole aspect needs softening with some plants. The porch is too harsh at the moment. Can you get something to climb around it and then some planters under the windows. If the planters under the far windows outside the brickwork were cream to match the centre home it might tie it all together a bit better too?

thinkingcapon · 27/04/2019 11:51

If you can't afford to decorate I'd put loads of shrubs/planters and maybe a nice bench?

Maybe a few lights?

JessieMcJessie · 27/04/2019 11:51

Massive house though- lucky you!

Thismummyruns · 27/04/2019 11:53

I think it just needs softening up with plants/planters etc

Hoppinggreen · 27/04/2019 11:54

I agree it all looks too harsh
Soften it with loads of planters and it will look better.
The porch is not right, it is a nice porch and probably expensive but it doesn’t suit the house
However, if you can’t or don’t want to replace it plants are the way to go

MsLayla · 27/04/2019 11:54

Wooden porch thing looks a bit silly. Nice bit of wood but just not for this. Is also an odd size for the small front door. And the piled bricks holding the posts up also look slightly strange.
Would make a big difference having the whole house the same colour exterior. I like the colour of the middle bit (a little lighter would have been even nicer) and the door, could look lovely! You have a very nice home.

Snowglobes · 27/04/2019 11:57

I meant it would Cost a fortune to paint all same colour as the bricks would need to be rendered too. And the whole house done. Unless you mean just paint the middle section ivory?
The porch hasn’t been tagged on but I know what you mean, the whole thing doesn’t come together does it?
Absolutely agree with the landscaping and there are borders to be planted up and pots added etc etc. But I still think there’s something not right.
I now think it’s a clash of the grey slate roof and oak porch.
