is this nice or awful? Too much going on? Slate roof, cream wall, green door and solid oak porch. And what to do?

I would in no way touch the porch!!! The oak is beautiful I think the cream needs to weather down a bit it's all about new and fresh. I wouldn't start messing with the porch though, perhaps you can neutralise the cream a bit and not make it so bright?

JessieMcJessie · 27/04/2019 12:35

And you’re sure it’s original? Have you seen archive pics of the house?

TwitterQueen1 · 27/04/2019 12:35

The whole porch is completely wrong unfortunately, and the brick foundations look odd too. Wrong style, wrong materials, wrong colour.... a brick porch would look much more in keeping.

However, if you just grow loads of climbers and and put pots out I'm sure you can disguise it.

Snowglobes · 27/04/2019 12:35

schmithecat2 your friend’s house is tiny!! But that’s a Georgian porch, dyou think that’d work?

Bluntness100 · 27/04/2019 12:36

Op, there is no way that porch is original. I'm sorry.

Hellbentwellwent · 27/04/2019 12:37

Op I’m sure the house is beautiful inside, I love 1930/ architecture but from the outside it’s just not working. I think you’d be best to get an architect onboard for advice.

I agree with a pp who said the pitch is too steep on the porch roof. But also the yellow cream colour is very 80s, I’d repaint that to a cooler shade of ivory.

The block work drive right up to the front of the house along its full length also lends it the look of a block of flats with communal parking. Get a landscaper in to soften the boundary and put in some appealing curves so it’s not all so utilitarian

Snowglobes · 27/04/2019 12:39

All the houses in our village were built in 1930’s so need to be in keeping with neighbours a bit.

To me would look better if the porch roof matched the angles (and tiles) of the bay roof on the right if that makes sense.....but I'm guessing that would mean rebuilding or prohibitively expensive to alter

boringlyboring · 27/04/2019 12:45

I think it’s the white windows that make the wooden porch look odd. If the windows were a similar colour, it would tie in better. Not sure how much that helps...

Can we have a nosy inside? Grin

Bluntness100 · 27/04/2019 12:45

It works like this op.

But if you google storm porches on 30s houses, you can see they follow the style of the house and the roof slope to look integral.

This is white though, with an oak door, so would be better,

Foottunnel · 27/04/2019 12:46

Can you retake a picture of the whole of the house from front on?
You say there’s an extra bit to the right we can’t see in the 2nd pic you posted, and that pic is on the wonk and not taken straight on.

A straight on pic might help better with understanding the actual dimensions of the whole house, seeing what the roof looks like from front on and then we can continue to advise accordingly.

boringlyboring · 27/04/2019 12:46

If the windows were like this

Snowglobes · 27/04/2019 12:48

I agree Aldi the pitch needs to match the bay window. The porch has the same tiles but the pitch is wrong. Changing that’d be cheaper than rendering and painting the whole house.

I think if you put a pair of pots with little trees on either sides of the door it’ll soften the whole effect.

ClumsyPickle · 27/04/2019 12:50

I like the porch and the house is beautiful just would benefit from a few tweaks. For me I think the issue is that the porch and everything in it (door, two windows, lights) is very symmetrical but nothing else about the house is. The porch looks too 'neat' on the house and therefore like it's been stuck on. I'd be tempted to try and make it less symmetrical with a big planter and foliage to the right...possibly even enclose one side of the porch or play about with the lights in there.

Snowglobes · 27/04/2019 12:52

foottunel not really as it’s very long but is the same as the left side but set back a tadge.

I would paint the render white, not a bright white though but I more period white, paint the windows the same colour as the front door, then limewash the oak porch, then let it age to the grey oak as others have suggested. The lime wash will allow the oak grain to show through but the white of the wash will tone it down and work with the white render.

Hope that makes sense!

Hecateh · 27/04/2019 12:57

As above the porch looks a bit 'meh' but shelter over the door is such a benefit I'd be reluctant to get rid.

My first thought was paint it dark slate grey to patch the roof but as it is lovely wood I can see why you would be reluctant to do that.

The wood will age in time and look better, planters and climbers such as clematis will soften it.

Look at some youtube ideas for aging wood, vinegar and baking soda are mentioned so it shouldn't be expensive.

Snowglobes · 27/04/2019 12:59

That sounds good ‘schloss’ do I sand it down before the limewash?
For the others talking about roof pitch, dyou mean a hipped roof like these rather than the existing gable? If so, will it still look like RAF terrace houses as someone suggested up thread?

I’d paint the oak white to match the window frames, and the bricks at the bottom to match the house. Then it won’t look so obviously out of place.
And then grow a wisteria over the top (purple looks great with yellow).

And yes, some big pots (grey to match the roof) with some large frondy plants will soften it all up.

whitehalleve · 27/04/2019 13:00

The porch just looks plonked on.

GreenTulips · 27/04/2019 13:04

What are the windows either side of the door?

The door seems too little in comparison? Maybe get rid of the windows and replace with a full door

Iris1654 · 27/04/2019 13:05

I can’t do links🙄 but I would make it a more contemporary box.
If you google, modern glass porch designs There’s a house with number 78,I would add something like that but with a brick wall to try to tie it into the house. I would have the glass panel to match the windows.

I’d be worried about loosing light, it that a hallway behind?

I would also landscape with straight lines across the front of the house. I think a low wall in cream would pull it together.

I would plant big plants, and I’d just have repetitive planting across the front, this would help it look like one house. A cream wall would help balance it.

schloss · 27/04/2019 13:06

For the limewash it is best to remove any stain or wax on the oak however the most important thing is to open the grain of the oak before applying the limewash, this is normally done by using wire wool or a hard bristled scrubbing brush. You could also use water based white matt emulsion watered down, personally I would buy a white tester pot of paint, dilute so it is very watery then try it on the porch in a corner somewhere. You could then see if it needs any prep prior to painting it. There is also lime wax which is exacly as it says but is white in a tin, limewash would be easier and quicker.

Snowglobes · 27/04/2019 13:06

It’s a full size normal door and windows are windows. Door and windows lead into a large hallway and the window to the left us where the boot room is.
