Anyone have this? Any cautionary tales? How big are your islands to accommodate this?

Thanks!

I have my small veg prep sink in my island at one end near my fridges and my large hob with an oven under at the other end, but in one side. It’s 3.2 m x 1.4m

elasticfantastic · 31/03/2019 21:04

Ooo watching with interest... I think I want my job in mine but can't decide. That sounds an interesting idea @BubblesBuddy don't suppose you'd post a pic? No worries if not/ too outing Smile

elasticfantastic · 31/03/2019 21:05

I seriously need to read before posting... hob not job!! Bloody autocorrect!

BubblesBuddy · 31/03/2019 21:08

Forgot to say! No issues at all. Love the design. You just have to decide if it works for you. In between the sink and the hob is clear work surface with bins under and my pan/mixing bowl/measuring jug drawers plus cutlery and utensil drawer as well. Do make sure you have enough dishing up space though. A small island doesn’t allow for this.

BubblesBuddy · 31/03/2019 22:19

This is it. If it’s recognised, so be it!

Me! It works for us. Island is about 3m x 2m. We have a 90cm hob and double sink.

elasticfantastic · 31/03/2019 22:26

Oooo love it! Love the wooden circle for sitting around too.

tldr · 31/03/2019 22:52

Omg, I love it bubbles! (But I love your garden more!)

tunstall, are your hob and sink both in same side? Like at either end?

OP posts:
TunstallTansy · 31/03/2019 22:54

They are at 90° to each other - sink on longer side, job on shorter at the other end.

tldr · 31/03/2019 22:56

Ooh, interesting, thanks.

We couldn’t have our sink in the island. The water pipes have to run under the floor and come up inside the island, and the waste pipe has to exit the same way. We didn’t have enough space under the floor for those pipes. We were also advise that the sink should go next to the dishwasher so they could share the same waste pipe, as otherwise we’d have to install two.

Similarly we had a right faff making space for the gas pipes to run under the floor to the island, and we had difficulty finding a suitable spot for the electric cooker switch which building regs requires to be located within a certain distance of the cooker.

Titsywoo · 31/03/2019 23:12

I have a large island which is just counterspace. It works brilliantly. Having the sink and hob against a wall works much better for splashes etc and it looks less messy. The island makes the room more social and we all stand/sit around it which would be harder if it was covered in stuff.

SosigDog · 31/03/2019 23:21

You also have to think about the positioning of your cooker hood. If it’s against the wall you can have a big cooker hood but it would look awful hanging down in the middle of the island and blocking the view across the room. For our cooker on the island we had to get a (much more expensive) extractor which lies flush with the ceiling. Of course then you need to have the space for it to be hidden in the ceiling cavity, and space for the extractor pipe to run through the ceiling and vent to the outside.

BubblesBuddy · 01/04/2019 09:31

We played fast and loose with building regs! We don’t have an extractor. It’s also my second sink. I have a double Belfast as well with the dishwasher adjacent.

Thanks for kind comments.

BubblesBuddy · 01/04/2019 09:31

This kitchen was also built from scratch and you can dig up floors!

Bowerbird5 · 01/04/2019 09:44

Wow! Bubbles it is gorgeous but I love your garden even more. What a lovely view from your kitchen.😀

tldr · 02/04/2019 09:38

Thank you all for this - the kitchen will be in a new extension so I should be okay for water/drains/gas, but you’ve given me other things to think about.

Thanks.

(Side note; I’ve never ever had an extractor, I’ve just opened windows. Are they absolutely essential?)

You can get hobs with built in extractors, or pop up extractor. I think it really depends on how much you use the hob.
I had to have a pump for the water to get out of the island, even though all the floor came up.its just a little pump under the sink, automatic, works fine so far.
I would avoid putting sink or hob on island because of splashes. But if it's big enough and away from seating it can be fine

another20 · 02/04/2019 13:11

I think that you need to think what you want to use your island for and what are your priorities from that list. So eating at (with seating), social standing space for drinks / snacks / buffet at a party, prepping food, plating up etc. I am just ripping out my old island (3mx1.2m) which has my main sink with dishwasher under - it was a mistake from day one as both dirty plates and clean/drying pans were on display. New kitchen has double sinks and DW on back wall and just a veg prep sink with quooker hot and cold tap. Also island will be replaced by a longer peninsula half wooden chunky social part and the rest quartz top that runs back in a U to hob and sinks. I didn’t like the original island as with the hob on the back wall - it was essentially a galley kitchen with sink and hob opposite which I found hard to work in.

tldr · 02/04/2019 16:22

I want hob/sink on island partly to be facing garden/room when I’m working and partly because I’m a bit limited in where else to put them.

Like you say another it’s effectively going to be a galley kitchen within a bigger room so what I’m hoping I can do a run of tall units against wall and hob, sink, dw, in island. Island would be only workspace.

Island would need to be split level or have little wall down middle to separate sitting bit from working bit. Still don’t know what to do with kettle/coffee machine/toaster.

There’s room for island to be long, but not esp wide.

Thanks for all your thoughts - really appreciate them.

The reason we had ours positioned where we did was to see the garden and be sociable when people were seated around the raised table. We had allowed for a pop up extractor but it would have been a barrier between the hob and guests. We have two walls with another oven, microwave grill, lots of storage, drawers, a larger unit, coffee machine, etc. The fridges and freezer are at the veg prep sink end. It all seems to work for us.

We have opening roof vents, two windows and two sets of French windows. We can ventilate! You should have an extra fit for building regs but they never checked actual installation. The glass lantern is around 1.5m above standard wall height so the kitchen has quite a large volume. It never ever gets steamy.

BubblesBuddy · 02/04/2019 17:00

extra fit!!!! Extractor!

elasticfantastic · 02/04/2019 17:45

Another extractor question... do they have to have a 'pipe' to an outside wall? Sorry if that sounds daft.. when they're not on an outside wall where do they "extract" to?!

242Mummy · 02/04/2019 20:01

tldr I've got a run of tall units along the wall and induction hob, sink, dishwasher in the island. Island is 3.6m x 1.2m ish (wide enough fir back to back cupboards). I love it - will attach photos and hope they upload!

I have an extractor fan over the hob, piped to the outside, I think you can just about see it in the photo. I think it is necessary.

Ah, that’s exactly what I need 242. Same size as the island I can comfortably fit. Where’s your kettle/toaster/coffee machine etc?

Thanks so much for posting photos.
