Hello everyone.

So we have just bought our dream home.. a cute ex Farmhouse in a village.

We would like to name it.
It's on a corner of a street.
We like :

The Corner Farmhouse

Or just

Corner Farmhouse

Which do you prefer ? Or any other ideas?
Thank you so much x

I once had to deal with a woman in a Dublin suburb who's house was called "Costalott".

Corner Farm sounds great but unless you have a least a yard and a few chickens knocking about the place it's a bit misleading. So I'd go with Corner Farmhouse, Corner Cottage or Cornerstone (assuming it's made of stone). No "The"!

StarJumpsandaHalf · 28/03/2019 08:20

Brunswick Farmhouse

By far and away the best.

‘Putting your own stamp on it’ and god how I abhor that phrase, shouldn’t mean stamping all over its history.

If it were called something offensive or stupid I could understand, but not just for vanities sake. You’re thinking of replacing something of character with something very mundane. There are plenty of other ways to make the house personal to you.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 28/03/2019 08:25

Brunswick Farmhouse

I agree with starjumpsandahalf its current name is much nicer than the two new suggestions and that's likely what they neighbours will refer to it as regardless of what you call it.

It is also worth noting that in the event of an emergency the local fire/ambulance crews and people directing them locally if necessary are more likely to know where the house is if it keeps its original name.

The Corner former Farmhouse.Grin

What about Brunswick Corner?

NewMummyx · 28/03/2019 08:41

Yes we love the history of the house that's why we didn't want a new build. But it's never been sign posted on the house as Brunswick House. It's been empty for 4 years now been done up & sold.

And now we have a shopping centre called Brunswick & that's all I think of when I hear the name 🙈

Oh I like Stone Corner Farmhouse.

Attached to us are old barns that have now been converted.

Stone Corner Farmhouse - that’s nice

senua · 28/03/2019 08:58

Oh! Did you know that 'Brunswick Farmhouse' is a type of brick, from Ibstock?

Cafeculture · 28/03/2019 09:04

What do the locals call it?

Definitely not 'New Name Farm' as you don't have a farm. That would be ridiculous.

It should remain Brunswick Farmhouse.

Trekkingbeyond · 28/03/2019 09:07

If you rename it only you will ever use the new name. We've lived in our cottage for 20 years and it's still referred to as the previous owners' house by the locals. I never correct them!

soontobefour4 · 28/03/2019 09:09

Out of the new suggestions, Corner Farm, but honestly I'd stick with the original name. Brunswick Farmhouse sounds absolutely lovely and you will put local people's noses out of joint by coming in and renaming it (I know it's your house and nothing to do with them, but you will, like it or not!). Plus all the practical stuff others have mentioned - post, emergency services etc.

Congratulations on your dream home - sounds lovely!

Alexalee · 28/03/2019 09:11

Brunswick farmhouse is best

For clarification I never said you working hard for the house was pretentious
Changing the name is, especially to something so dull

StarJumpsandaHalf · 28/03/2019 09:20

Stone Corner Farmhouse sounds like the house at Stone Corner.

If it’s never had a nameplate does it have a number?

Do the redeveloped barns have names or numbers? If there’s a development name could you link up to that?

longearedbat · 28/03/2019 09:21

I like the original name too. If it is old you might even find it is referred to as that on ordnance survey maps. I don't think renaming a house is bad luck (like it's supposed to be on boats), but is just seems a bit over the top. The house was there before you were born presumably, and will be there after you die, keeping the original name is a litle piece of history.
Also, I have a feeling that the post office charge for this or something? I know there are a few hoops to jump through anyway.

BlackSatinDancer · 28/03/2019 09:28

The old farmhouse.
Ye olde farmhouse.

It isn't a farmhouse anymore so to call it that is a bit misleading whereas the above names do pay homage to it's former role. Helps people who like local history too by pinpointing places on old maps.

BlackSatinDancer · 28/03/2019 09:30

Old Brunswick Farmhouse.

Bluesheep8 · 28/03/2019 09:32

I'd stick with the original name tbh. You will put your own stamp on it with decor and furnishings, have fun concentrating on that. I'd only ever change the name if it was something stupid and twee/personal to them that someone had made up.

Bluesheep8 · 28/03/2019 09:35

Or just refer to it by its number. I spent my formative years in a house that was called " xxx Garth" I searched for it on rightmove recently and it hasn't been referred to by its name for years, it's 1a xxx Avenue now..I felt a bit sad that it has lost the name I remember it by.

CoffeeRunner · 28/03/2019 09:39

Does it have a street number too? Or is the current address just Brunswick Farmhouse, Cutesy Pie Lane etc etc etc?

I would definitely stick to Brunswick Farmhouse. Partly because if there is no door number you’re really going to confuse the postman and/or delivery drivers - and partly because if there is a door number, literally nobody is going to use your new name anyway.

Also Corner Farmhouse in any format is dull & imaginative.

It’s the same as calling my house End Terrace On The Right.

Ariela · 28/03/2019 09:43

Given it's the old farmhouse but re-jigged to become a new modern home, why not just re-gig the name as an anagram and call it Winsbruck Farmhouse?

PazRaz10 · 28/03/2019 09:43

I'd call it 'The Cornerhouse' - as it's not a farm any more, it removes that reference and totally puts your own stamp on it.

FriarTuck · 28/03/2019 09:43

Stick with Brunswick Farmhouse - it has a traditional solid feel to it. Changing it for Corner is just a bit artificial sounding.

Ariela · 28/03/2019 09:46

If it was mine I'd keep the name though. My friend's house is called (first half of previous owners name, second half of previous owners partners name) so along the lines of BarryJoanna House

Ariela · 28/03/2019 09:47
  • no idea why strike through didn't work
SilviaSalmon · 28/03/2019 09:48

Brunswick Farmhouse sounds lovely.

But if you HAVE to change it, Corner Farmhouse sounds better IMO.

Just make sure that angry Brunswicks don’t return to haunt you for trying to airbrush them out of history. Grin

BiltongBetty · 28/03/2019 09:48

Keep the original name - all the Stone/corner names just sound so generic, they make me think of soulless newbuilds trying to be less soulless.
