I grew up nearby, nice town when I was there. Good market, still had the feeling of a small market town, the schools had a good reputation and countryside around there is nice. Not a massive amount to do in the evenings so depends what you’re after I guess.

countdowntonap · 15/03/2019 22:33

I like Uttoxetor! On the edge of the Peak District, with a pretty relaxed lifestyle. Money goes a long way.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 15/03/2019 22:39

Um, your kids can get summer jobs at alton towers?
Is there still a biscuit factory?
You can get the train to Derby?
I grew up not far away and had mates who lived there. We had to make our own entertainment.
Belper's got a bit more going on tbh and you could prob commute

fleabaglet · 15/03/2019 22:40

that sounds pretty good. we arn`t after much in the evenings! just a nice place!

Nearby, Stone might be nicer

fleabaglet · 16/03/2019 07:10

well we`re going to visit today. lots of driving.....

Ooo yes, I’d chose Stone over Uttoxetor for the town centre, but prefer Uttoxetors proximity to the Peak District. Enjoy your look around Smile

8mileeminem · 16/03/2019 14:37

I've lived in uttoxeter all my life, just sold and bought a new house in the area. Agree all the schools are good in the area. Easy commuting town , derby and stoke within easy reach. Great to be close to the Peak District, Alton towers, racecourse etc

8mileeminem · 16/03/2019 14:38

By the way it will be extra busy today as it's the midlands grand national

nellyitsme · 16/03/2019 15:25

I'm from stafford and now live near Derby. I know uttoxeter quite well and drive through it every week. I used to work in a advisory role in uttoxeter schools.

It's grown considerably since I was a child when it used to be a little farming and market town and it was a bit cut off before the A50. There are some newish houses on estates and some older traditional red brick houses. There's a retail park with Tesco and a cinema and bowling and a Lidl. There's a Waitrose and further up is the town centre which I find has quite a bit of charm. Oh and the racecourse which is hosting the midlands grand national today as someone upthread said - it becomes a caravan club campsite when there's no racing on.

The secondary school is good and the primaries too. There's some lovely villages nearby like doveridge and Rocester, JCB has a factory and a mini town nearby. Sudbury is lovely and houses the national trust property Sudbury hall and the museum of childhood. Stone is nice and perhaps a bit livelier than Uttoxeter there's lots of town houses and apartment blocks recently built around the canal. stafford is 14 miles away and I'm biased being from there that is a bigger town and the county town.
I've just checked on google maps and uttoxeter to Belper is 39 miles - it's doable to commute. Ashbourne is great too but houses are pricier

fleabaglet · 16/03/2019 22:03

we visited and we liked it. weatherspoons was very busy, but the town itself was fine if thats "busy". are the midlle schools in town feeder schools for the secondary? ds is currently year 7.

OP posts:
donajimena · 16/03/2019 22:06

I only went there once (guess where we were visiting?) Its got a lot of charm and a nice curry house. I'm glad you liked it. I'd go back to visit the wider area.

fleabaglet · 16/03/2019 22:06

and ds is high functioning ASD. Hows that for him?

OP posts:
fleabaglet · 16/03/2019 22:08

we also visited belper. nice town, more there, but prefer uxotter

OP posts:
fleabaglet · 16/03/2019 22:10

dh has applied to derby high and newcastle under lyme (I think its called?) near stoke. uxotter is perfectly placed.

OP posts:
fleabaglet · 16/03/2019 22:11

can I ask is there any rough bits we should avoid? door lady at weatherspoons didn`t give anything away when I asked! we had to wait as weatherspoons was full, so I asked !

nellyitsme · 16/03/2019 23:00

Glad you liked it - the middle schools are feeders for Thomas Alleynes
Which school in Newcastle U Lyme has your DH applied for?
Avoid the area around Johnson's Road - when I worked there I was always hearing tales of criminal goings on from there

Have you considered living in Newcastle u Lyme and some of the villages around there

The local nickname for people from Uttoxeter is woolly backers as they're sheep farmers.

nellyitsme · 16/03/2019 23:10

Ps Staffordshire lea has an autism outreach team www.staffordshire.gov.uk/education/welfareservice/SpecialEducationalNeeds/documents/Autism-outreach-team.pdf

fleabaglet · 17/03/2019 08:08

thanks! well if dh gets a job around here I can safely say uttoxeter is a definate thumbs up. x

another question: whats the traffic like going through church lane. theres a beautiful town house along there! we lived years ago before ds with our garden backing onto a really busy A road . Never bothered us! www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-79911200.html#

tippyteapot · 18/03/2019 16:07

we are at a stage in life where we have the garden the same size as this and its fine! we dont need a sprawling garden.....ds is more into his ps4 lol. we dont mind the yearly charge for the private carpark thing....its secure and its for maintenence.

nellyitsme · 18/03/2019 17:50

Is this a namechange? House looks nice! My brother and SIL lives in a townhouse like this in stafford and they love it. Church lane area used to be a route to get round the town and onto the derby road. With the A50 it's not so busy. Nowhere is really too busy in Uttoxeter., although it does get busy on the derby road going towards the a50 at rush hour hope this makes sense and helps

tippyteapot · 18/03/2019 19:18

sorry yes! I did wonder that when I looked on the map. thats a dream house for us (more so if it was a garage instead of downstairs sitting room and the carpark....)

tippyteapot · 18/03/2019 19:20

do they have the charge for carparking thing? this would be the first time we`d have encountered it.

nellyitsme · 18/03/2019 19:48

Go for it, it's not that busy. What have you got to lose?
The parking thing isn't a thing they do generally, although they seem to do it at the apartments opposite Tesco - I think they're retirement flats.
This is a good place for a meal not Uttoxeter - and owned by Neil morrisey oldbramshall.co.uk/
