Karndean flooring

Does anyone have this, or much experience of Karndean flooring? We'd like parquet flooring in our kitchen and dining room when the kitchen is redone but I'd also like to run it through our hallway to our sitting room as the flooring in there is damaged and I like the look of flooring that flows from room to room. My DH is onboard with the idea of parquet, but we can't agree on which kind. I saw a porcelain tile type but he says he'd prefer not to as it'll be cold underfoot but I need to persuade him that Vinyl (with all its connotations of lino) won't look bad. Obviously real wood would normally be the way to go but I'm not sure that's the best idea for a kitchen or in front of a dishwasher or washing machine?

My mil has this and loves it. It’s much better in the kitchen than hard wood for spills etc.
It looks lovely, but was pretty expensive. We paid less for our solid wool oak.

Mumoftwo1980 · 07/02/2019 17:16

I have used this several times, in my last house I used it in both kitchen and bathroom and have just ordered it for the bathrooms in our new house. It is slightly expensive but very hard wearing, practical and looks great ! I have had the wood effect and also the slate tile effect one.

I've just had Moduleo fitted in a herringbone style and it's gorgeous. It was recommended to me by a few people. But the firing had to be done plank by plank by a specialist so not cheap....

Fitting not firing!

We had it throughout our last house and plan to have it laid in our new house. I love it. Hard wearing and easy to keep clean. Obviously not as warm as carpet but I’ve found carpet doesn’t tend to last especially with three kids and a dog.

pontiouspilates · 07/02/2019 17:31

Another fan! It looks great, is easy to keep clean and is not cold underfoot like porcelain tiles.

CMOTDibbler · 07/02/2019 17:43

We have it through all downstairs - wood effect except for the kitchen which looks like slate. So practical, not cold or noisy, and spills are no issue

ILOVEALLCAKES · 07/02/2019 21:16

Apologies for hijacking this post but for those who have Karndean- what do you use to clean it?

XingMing · 08/02/2019 14:32

Almost any standard laminate floor cleaning product with a whizz mop or a steam cleaner. Ours has been down 17 years and has been cleaned with everything! Nothing too foamy.

I have Karndean Michaelangelo and in my bathrooms and love it. I also have Polyflor Simplay in Grey Ash in my kitchen which we are really pleased with. The Karndean went on to hardboard I think, whereas the Simplay needed a latex screed on a concrete floor, so depends on what's going on underneath.

We moved into a new build with it early last year. It's in the kitchen / dining, the downstairs loo and the utility. I'm really impressed with it, it looks good, it hoovers and cleans easily and it feels more comfortable to walk on than most hard floors imo. I just wish they'd used it in the bathroom too instead of the great looking, but bloody cold tiles.

Thank you all, that's very helpful 👍

we have karndean I believe to be at least 15 years old and it looks great still (the only floor we didn't replace when moving in)

IHeartKingThistle · 08/02/2019 15:59

We love our Karndean. Originally wanted the parquet too but it is eyewateringly expensive compared to the planks (which aren't cheap anyway!). Beautiful floors though and have lasted so much better than the engineered wood we have elsewhere.

Hersetta427 · 08/02/2019 22:29

We have it in every room apart from the stairs and landing. Love it.

W0rriedMum · 09/02/2019 12:29

Be careful with fitters.. I used a small local shop who was well regarded with good reviews. However they used clearly unqualified fitters who messed up my house in a serious way (I don't want to say how as it's super outing). They also didn't prepare the floor well enough so the Karndean has cracked across one of the ridges they left.

I also have Amtico which is 15 years old and perfect. The fitters were amazing.

I would be cautious with the Karndean specialist you pick and ask for proof that their fitters are qualified.

MissMarplesKnitting · 09/02/2019 12:35

Don't use steam on these floors, it knackers the adhesive.

Spray mop or laminate cleaning kit is ok but steam is definitely not.

MiniCooperLover · 09/02/2019 15:06

We went and priced it up today. £70 per square metre. Ouch ... we'd need 50sqm to do all the rooms we wanted. That's a lot of expensive flooring but I did really like it. It'll depend on what price Howdens come back with for the kitchen and then we'll see ...

We went for Kardean spanish cherry parquet, from the front door down the hallway & into our kitchen. I got a good deal online, it was £45sqm.

It's fine to use with underfloor heating, which we have in the kitchen.

Our fitter said definitely do not use steam as it melts the adhesive. I got a sonic machine which brings it up really nicely. I'm really happy with it Smile

I hated mine, was a pain to look after, needed stripping every 6 months and then polish leaving on overnight.

I ripped it up and put down Amico which is miles better.

Fiddie · 10/02/2019 18:01

It scratched badly too, although not deep they used to catch my eye a lot.

ApplestheHare · 10/02/2019 18:04

Fiddie was it definitely Karndean you had? We've had it for years through kids and dogs doing their best to destroy it and it still looks brand new. I've never heard of it being stripped or polished... parquet, yes.

Teddyreddy · 10/02/2019 18:14

We have the bottom of the range Karndean Knight Tile in our utility room. It has definitely scratched slightly in a couple of placed in the 8 months or so it's been in. We're fine with that as our builders got us a deal on it, we were going to go for cheap lino roll - but I'd be annoyed if we'd paid full price.

In our kitchen, we have the Karndean Art Select, and it is much much more durable than the Knight Tile. I'm think it's partly due to the thicker wear layer on it (0.7 mm rather than 0.3) but also the surface is textured to mimic limestone rather than flat and shiny - which just hides any scuff marks better.

Fiddie · 10/02/2019 18:25

Yes definitely Karndean. I had to use the karndean cleaners on it which were very pricey too.

It was a couple of years ago so maybe the new stuff is better but it was honestly the bane of my life. We had it throughout the downstairs and in the bathrooms.
