Allestree is quite a big area, but it’s one of the nicer parts of Derby. It’s close to the city centre, Darley Abbey is a nice place close by. 5-10 miles could cover the whole of the city, the good bits, bad bits and all in between.

ConferencePear · 06/02/2019 21:47

Do you need to take schools into account ?

Didiusfalco · 06/02/2019 21:49

Ooh I know something about this. Allestree is nice and the primary schools are good, Woodlands, the secondary school is also good. Duffield is nicer though and the Ecclesbourne school is one of the best secondaries in the wider area - very sought after. Darley Abbey which is next to Allestree is also very nice and has a lovely park which the river runs through. I think a lot of Darley Abbey is in the Ecclesbourne catchment area as well. If I was moving to the area I would look at Allestree, Darley Abbey, Duffield and possibly Littleover within the catchment of Littleover Community School. If I wanted something more rural but didn’t have the money for Duffield I would look at Belper. I think the worst part about the area is the city centre which is a bit of a dump, and nowhere near as good as neighbouring cities like Nottingham and Birmingham.

VanillaSauce · 06/02/2019 21:50

The north areas like Allestree, Darley Abbey and Duffield are all ok the city itself it's pretty grim tbh. Mostly uninspiring with very little creative culture but mostly industry. The outskirts of Derbyshire, South Derbyshire and the Peaks are much nicer.

Jsmith99 · 06/02/2019 22:11

Allestree is definitely one of the better areas of Derby. The area close to the A6 heading north out of Derby has a nice village feel, with several streets of large detached houses.

West of this is a large suburban estate of more affordable 1970s & 80s housing. In the middle of this estate is a shopping centre called Park Farm parkfarmshoppingcentre.co.uk/.

Depending on your budget, you may also want to consider Darley Abbey, a very nice village-like suburb closer to Derby city centre or the villages of Quarndon and Duffield north of the city.

Derby city centre has a large, very modern Intu shopping mall which would not look out of place in a bigger, more affluent city. This place opened about 10 years ago but has sucked so much life out of the rest of the city centre that parts of town now look very run down & shabby.

I don't agree with you - I'm an artist and there lots of arts and craft type things going on and theres a solid arts tradition in derby. I find derby to be a small friendly buzzy city with lots of interesting buildings of architectural merit. I say this as someone who lived in London for 20 years.

I agree with people's comments about allestree, Darley abbey and Duffield. In addition to darley park there's Markeaton Park with a craft centre and cafes, play area walks etc.

I grew up in Duffield and went to ecclesbourne, my family live in allestree. Duffield is middle class and a bit cliquey but nice restaurants, bars, etc. Allestree is very hilly, less to do. You need to be aware of schools. I don’t mind derby city centre, the intu is ok and cathedral quarter offers some independent shops. I would move back if it wasn’t so near my in laws.

FadedRed · 06/02/2019 22:41

Welcome to Derby, Op.
Sorry, but you won’t get a detached in Allestree or the area around for £200k.
Have you looked on Rightmove/Zoopla? Perhaps a search and come back with some houses that look promising and we could give you a better idea of the area?

Here’s a three bed semi in Allestree at £195,000 which needs a bit of work, hence the price. Bargainous for the area though.

thanks! well having had a bit more looking at allestree I dont think its for us. BUT Belper looks really nice and up the road. Hubbys looking at a teaching post at allestree secondary school (forgot the name). ds is year 7 and is ASD so school and SEN are important. His current secondary is small and has been great with him so far. So the moves got to be right for him . I think Allestree is a bit too close to Derby for us to live. Ds struggles a bit with lots of hustle and bustle, noise. Hes a small town / country bumpkin lol! I worry outskirts of Derby the kids would eat him alive.

I live in Derby and I would highly recommend Belper (my parents live there). It has a great community feel, beautiful surrounding countryside, lots of independent shops and cafes, good schools and only a 15 min drive into Derby.
It’s quite an expensive town and you might get a bit more for your money on the outskirts of Belper in places such as Heage, Kilburn and Milford.

itsnnothere · 07/02/2019 10:55

Ashbourne is a lovely town and not too far away. As a teacher myself I wouldn't want to live too near to the school.
The school in allestree is woodlands, I know people who work in the ASD unit - it seems to be v good.
I like Belper too

ladyspongecake · 07/02/2019 11:59

thats the school! mmm a good ASD unit would be great. Yeah we dont tend to live in catchment of school, allows for no embarrassing of local kids and dh to live a normal life lol. anyone know what the school in belpers like? At the moment ds is at the same school dh teaches at and that made his year 7 transition much easier. weve been able to deal with teething problems of ds very quickly as dh is there so able to talk to his teachers anytime. But its not a requirement for them to be "together" if we move there, it just worked out that way. It has showed Dh what ds is really like in school though.

ladyspongecake · 07/02/2019 12:05

itsnotthere do you know of any other schools locally that are "good" ASD places? just to give us an idea? is woodlands the sort of place thats full up? sooooo many questions. we would be swapping a 15- 20 drive to a beach for hills. the draw for me is the peaks (I`m into hiking/ camping/ wildcamping) and for dh AQA is manchester and would cut down a lot of driving (he does bits n bobs for them as well as teaching).

I found this on google www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/local-news/belper-school-sixth-form-centre-264575.
Have you thought about going out east of derby on the A52 to some of the urban villages like Spondon and Borrowash or Draycott? Most kids from there go to west park school or one of the long eaton secondaries.

itsnnothere · 07/02/2019 12:11

I don't know which schools are the best as i know Nottingham schools better. I can ask my relative who works at woodlands. There's a centre for autism called the Holbrook centre that is very good. It's near to Belper

ladyspongecake · 07/02/2019 12:12

no I hadnt actually.....

I know Belper well, it’s a great place to live. A very nice little town with fascinating history in a lovely setting in the Derwent valley. It has excellent access to Derby, Nottingham, the Peak District and the M1. I would be very happy to live there. Perhaps someone else can comment on the schools?

Ashbourne is also lovely. It’s quite posh by Derbyshire standards, and is one of the more expensive places in the county to live. Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School ‘QEGS’ is very highly rated.

Maybe have a look at some of the local schools and then plan around that to see where you like the look of?

ladyspongecake · 08/02/2019 08:19

thanks everyone. have found the local fb pages as well. sounds like a fab area

I went to Belper School and currently have family attending the school. I grew up locally to Belper and I do miss it. It's a lovely little town with great links to Derby and further north up to The Peak District.

Just so you are aware Belper School don't wear a school uniform and call the teachers by their first name.
