Making curtains

I am making curtains for my kids' room, and the one and only fabric they can agree on is a quilting cotton with a 110cm width. It has helpfully been discontinued, so I can only get enough for 1.5 fullness, and the Internet tells me I need 2x fullness or they will look "skimpy". I'm planning on interlining with cotton bump, and putting blackout lining on too. Do I really need 2x fullness??? Really???

No, should be fine in s kids room. As long as when they're shut they cover the window with a few inches spare on the sides and you won't be able to tell when they're open.

Jorgezaunders · 02/02/2019 21:29

No. It's a kid's room, not Buckingham palace. I really wouldn't worry.

fedupandlookingforchange · 02/02/2019 21:32

Can you drape the fabric over the curtain pole or track to give you an idea of how it will look or drape different fabric of the same width.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 02/02/2019 21:32

Sounds like an open and shut case op!!

DustyDoorframes · 02/02/2019 23:28

Brilliant! I will draw this to a close then...
Thank you v much all of you! Off to wrestle with bump for the first time in my life. I'm up the duff so the puns are just rolling in...

So the long awaited 10 meters of fabric have arrived... and the blasted seller has cut it into 10 1meter lengths!!!!! Aaaaaaaarrrgghh!!! It's going to look like a dog's dinner with seams all over the shop...

OP posts:
NotMeNoNo · 18/02/2019 15:59

That is really strange. We're they already pre cut? Usually the sellers have a note that multiple metres will be sent as a continuous length when you buy fabric, because it would be useless otherwise.

DustyDoorframes · 18/02/2019 16:25

They did! And I told her I was using it for curtains! It's come from the US (I know, I know... it was the only place that had 10m) and cosy a bomb in import duties. Really pissed off!

Omg you poor thing that is SO annoying, why would they do that???!!!! I had it once with liberty craft fabric but it was only two metres and they refunded. Was it through eBay?

DustyDoorframes · 18/02/2019 17:08

Etsy. I'm in the grotty stage of a first trimester, I just feel like chucking the lot and giving up on the whole idea of curtains...

I'm such a twonk. The listing does say 1 yard cuts. I looked at so many in my attempt to find 10 meters I must have confused myself. Argh!!!
Any tips on horizontal seams on curtains??? Is there any hope of it not looking godawful???

OP posts:
Fieau · 19/02/2019 07:46

Depends on the fabric, I had to do this with the curtains in our bedroom and unless you look closely you can't really see the horizontal seam.

If it's going to be more obvious could you turn it into a design feature somehow Confused

redhat · 19/02/2019 07:49

Can you cover the joins with ribbon? Or mix with another plain fabric and make it look like patchwork?

PurpleWithRed · 19/02/2019 07:50

what are the dimensions of the windows, and can you post a photo of the fabric design? Could maybe get a toning fabric and make a kind of grid patchwork?

Or buy some ready made make some plain ones and appliqué on key bits of the pattern?

What are the window dimensions and can you post a picture of the pattern?

MrsCollinssettled · 19/02/2019 07:52

Perhaps a contrast ribbon at regular intervals? Would need to make sure the joins lined up with the spacing of the ribbon though.

gudrunandtheseeress · 19/02/2019 07:57

1.5 fullness with interlining would be ok for me. With the blackout lining the curtains will be pretty bulky anyway. I would go for it.

Btw, is your rail able to cope with the weight of both interlining and blackout?

StatisticallyChallenged · 19/02/2019 09:11

What about getting a complementary single colour cotton and doing horizontal bands - you could do larger pieces of the quilting fabric, then a horizontal stripe of the plain and repeat down the length.

MrsCollinssettled · 19/02/2019 09:16

Or get plain curtains (Ikea have a good range for not much money) and do a band on each with your fabric. The left over fabric could be used to make a bean bag cushion/seat once you have got through the baby for.

MrsCollinssettled · 19/02/2019 09:16

Baby fog

DustyDoorframes · 19/02/2019 09:33

The pattern is quite small, and I need a drop of 1.75m (so was going to cut 2m pieces once all the hemming etc is accounted for). My pieces are 1m long by 1.1m wide, and each curtain needs to be 2.5m wide (so I'm going to have to cut some pieces vertically).
I thought ribbon too, but it would be bang across the middle (or in fact, just off the middle as more hem at the bottom..) which is a bit weird!
@MrsCollinssettled you might be onto something with keeping it simple until the baby fog lifts...
Here is the pattern with a biro for scale.

Ps- thank you all so much! I'm very grateful for borrowing your functioning brains!!

On reflection I would also buy plain curtains and have a band of your fabric running across. It will look much better and being able to use the rest for cushions etc will tie in the rest of the room.

CoperCabana · 19/02/2019 09:50

Yes definitely go the plain curtains with a band across. Making curtains is painful at the best of times, but in your first trimester and with cut up fabric - no thanks!

schloss · 19/02/2019 10:04

Have a look at the curtain is Ikea. I need some long length and width of linen to make curtains. I bought Ikea tab top unlined linen curtains, if I remember about 2m in length and each curtain 1.5m wide. Removed the tab tops, joined the 2 curtains together to get the extra width, then interlined and blackout lined.

Similar to yourself I also had a very long window and not enough fabric without a horizontal join. As suggested in other posts I hid the join with trimming.

schloss · 19/02/2019 10:08

Sorry Have a look at the curtains in Ikea! Not curtain is Ikea!
