Living in Lincoln

Hi,
I’m looking to buy a property in Lincoln, as my daughter will be attending uni there.
Any suggestions on nice streets and areas greatly appreciated. I’m from Norfolk so don’t know the area at all.
Many thanks

Avoid Monk’s Road and adjoining streets. There are lovely properties there but a fair amount of anti social behaviour and drug dealing etc.

Rosita · 23/01/2019 09:06

Sorry - posted too soon. The Bailgate area near the Cathedral is best and an easy walk from the university. Lower high street area is not nearly as nice but generally ok and a lot cheaper.

Passthepigs · 23/01/2019 09:06

Up hill is nicest, the Bailgate area is lovely. Still quite a number of students because of Bishop Grosseteste uni but feels a lot friendlier and safer than down in the city centre. It’s only a 15 minute walk to Lincoln uni from there.

Thank you for your replies, gives me somewhere to start my search Smile

I lived on Hereward Street, Spital Street and Burton Road during my time at uni there and they were all really nice.

It really depends on your budget.
Uphill is much nicer than lower high street or monks road area , but obviously will cost you more.
Find some properties on Rightmove that you like and ask us again
Lincoln is , on the whole , a very safe city.

Hails68 · 23/01/2019 12:03

Thank you all so much, I'll post some street names of properties that I've seen Smile

I have details of one on Alexandra terrace and also Albany street

Is the property for your daughter to live in? The west end bit of town will have other students but is nicer. Uphill is the nicest bit but pricier. Cheapest properties will be the monks road area and sincil bank but I wouldn’t recommend living in those areas. If you are looking to buy on the lower high street area, pick the houses the other side of the high street to Sincil bank like the Anchor quays development, peel street, cranwell street. There is a lot of development due to happen in the st marks area of the city (check the Lincolnite stories on it for details) so may be worth bearing in mind that area could be up and coming from an investment perspective

Passthepigs · 23/01/2019 13:31

Definitely Albany street out of those two. Much nicer area.

user1486915549 · 23/01/2019 13:47

Albany street definitely.
My sister used to live just round the corner in Mount Street.
Nice area.

CarolineForbes · 23/01/2019 13:49

I think if I bought now I’d go for Albany Street but as a student I’d like how central Alexandra terrace was. Suppose it depends on the houses. And bathroom location - a lot of houses in Lincoln have the old school only bathroom being way off the back of the kitchen on the ground floor!

CarolinePooter · 23/01/2019 15:19

Agree with previous posters. Burton Road is pleasant and safe, but more handy for Bishop Grosseteste than the University of Lincoln. It would be an uphill trek home. The streets around West Parade are easy walking distance to University. There are a lot of student houses but it is also family friendly with a good sense of community. Parking anywhere in Lincoln is tricky!

Hails68 · 23/01/2019 19:04

Foster street?

OP posts:
Hails68 · 23/01/2019 19:12

Posted before I'd finished.
I've seen a nice property in St Faiths street, I think this is in the recommended area? Smile

OP posts:
CarolineForbes · 23/01/2019 19:32

St Faiths would be a great area to live as a student - there are lots of students in the west end and it’s very walkable to the shops and bars.
Foster street you’ll likely get more for your money there. The lower high street is a bit less desirable but you’re only about five mins or so walk to St Marks shopping area where you have cafe Nero, Costa, PureGym Debenhams etc

Hails68 · 23/01/2019 21:43

Webb street? ( sorry) Smile

OP posts:
user1486915549 · 24/01/2019 08:44

Webb street...not so good, but walkable to town ( well , so are most places. )
You seem to be randomly looking all over town now.
Focus on an area people have recommended then look on a street map for houses for sale in that area.

Hails68 · 24/01/2019 10:05

Yes, just that the house for sale on Webb Street was lovely so got a bit distracted. Was definitely my fav property. Smile

OP posts:
CarolinePooter · 24/01/2019 10:46

Yes the one on Webb street does look pretty ;-) That side of the High Street is certainly preferable to Sincil Bank area, which sadly has a bit of a reputation for knife crime. On the other hand, I know a student landlord who buys purely on Monks Road, Dixon Street, Sincil Bank area. The houses are very cheap and he gets an excellent rental return. However, if I were buying for my daughter I would not have bought any of them. Maybe look at all the house rentals on Rightmove, that will show you the streets that are full of shared houses and bedsits. Those will be your problem areas. The West End area and Burton Road have plenty of owner occupiers alongside the students, so it is safer.

If I were going to live another hundred years I would be buying a lovely house on Monks Road and waiting for the area to re-gentrify! There are some gorgeous houses near the Arboretum, from when the area was thriving.

BTW not saying Lincoln is a hotbed of crime! It is such a great place to live. Hope your daughter enjoys her stay!

CarolineForbes · 25/01/2019 00:17

Webb street would be a much longer walk in to the centre and although Lincoln is known for being a safe city I wouldn’t walk back that way alone after a night out

CarolineForbes · 25/01/2019 00:19

I like your thinking re gentrification of Monks Road Caroline and hope it happens one day. Some of the houses are so pretty as is the arboretum it’s such a shame it’s not currently the nicest of areas!

pisspawpatrol · 25/01/2019 12:03

Students mostly live in the West end (streets around West Parade), or monks road area and sometimes at the lower end of the high street near the football stadium. All are ok as student areas go, the West end area is nicer.

If she's at the uni that's where most of her friends will live. If she is at Bishop Grott, the bailgate area is more likely.

CarolinePooter · 25/01/2019 12:27

Absolutely Caroline, what beautiful family houses they are. Someone moving here from London would be amazed at what they could buy!

CarolineForbes · 25/01/2019 14:55

Lincoln is definitely a good place to invest while the properties are so cheap and the city is growing. I sold a flat in Lincoln to a couple from London who were buying multiple buy to lets in Lincoln - they couldn’t believe how cheap everything was!
