Anyone lived in Marske-By-The-Sea?

Had a total change of plans with out move as we have both ended up with jobs in Stockton area. Been looking at where to live in the teeside area as seems fairly reasonable! Had looked at ingleby barwick, aklam, yarm but always been a dream to live by the sea. Visited Marske-By-The-Sea today and thought it looked lovely but not sure what it actually like as an area to live? Didn't look particularly rough although difficult to tell!
Looking for a fairly good primary and secondary school ideally in an area which is safe and isn't too deprived!
Would anyone have other recommendations?

DH grew up there and his family still live there, we visit a few times a year and it seems lovely. Lovely being by the sea and there's lots for kids to do in the local area; it also seems to have a nice community feel.

The local primary St Bedes won best 'parent power' school of the year of something last year, it's a fab school-my niece and nephew go and are doing really well

Hope that helps!

The landings is a nice estate.. 1990's builds I lived there growing up.. most of the west side is pretty nice.. there is a train line cutting towards the back of Marske... not mega busy but Potash (mine) trains can be loud. Round the sea front is also pretty nice and the area.. it never really was much of a deprived area from what I remember but it's been a while since I've been there.

Toon49 · 09/01/2019 19:00

That's great to hear and a bit of reassurance, just with it being close to Redcar and being told that wasnt too nice wanted to check! We looked at the landings today no houses up for sale at the moment but it's a gorgeous estate definitely going to keep a look out as not in a massive rush!

We live in Seaton Carew.
Worth a look op.

Toon49 · 09/01/2019 19:14

Just had a quick look on Rightmove looks some lovely houses there and very reasonable so definitely a possibility! Never been but definitely going to take a visit! What are the schools like? Is there much there or a high street or anything? Thanks

Seaton Carew is quiet ish, sea side amusements, good bowling and ice cream places - and fish +chips of course! Town is Hartlepool which has good and bad areas just like anywhere. Manor Academy /English Martyrs for a good secondary school, lots of choice for primary. Good library, assortment of shops including Primark /Clarks /Morrison's /Tesco /Asda /
Ice skating at Billingham 15 mins away!
We had never been but teens well settled here, younger dc - lots of parks!

madvixen · 09/01/2019 19:56

Saltburn is worth a look as well. Absolutely fabulous beaches and a really pretty town.

Dothehappydance · 09/01/2019 21:26

Marske isn't ok and the commute would be alright (ish) The A174 and A19 can get busy but compared to other areas it really isn't too bad. Outwood Bydales is a very good secondary - though Outwood is now without its critics.

Saltburn is nice - but you would be that little more further away.

Other areas (though not seaside) include Eaglescliffe (near Yarm) good secondary school, as is Conyers in Yarm. There is also Stokesley and Stokesley School - would be a little further commute, though fairly direct.

Ingleby is commuter-city so getting in and out can be a bit of a bind.

A bit further away is Sedgefield, though going south on the A19 in the morning is not fun (and this would also apply to Hartlepool/Seaton Carew) Sedgefield is £££, but only relatively so, it is still pretty cheap compared to down south - but further away from the coast.

QforCucumber · 09/01/2019 21:31

Stokesley was my school, its just received a requires improvement in all areas - recent years not recommended (say the last 5 or 6) was one of the best in the area 10- 15 yrs ago. Mum lives in Saltburn however we are nunthorpe. Marske to Stockton will be a bit of a mess on of a commute if you're a local (noone likes to travel more than 20 mins) but otherwise fine really. Not rough just more a quiet area. Not a lot going on, but thats the same all over here at the minute. Its not a bad place, but if needed be aware that the public transport is terrible.

KatesMott · 09/01/2019 21:35

I have links to the area- it’s not great and I would never choose to live there. Nearest ‘town’ is Redcar which I find run down and depressing and it feels remote and out of the way. Commute to Stockton would be long at peak times. If you’re hearts set on the seaside Saltburn is nicer with lots of Victorian houses though again would be quite a long commute.
Yarm is really lovely and would always be my first choice in the general Teesside area.

KatesMott · 09/01/2019 21:36

*your 🙄

RandomMess · 09/01/2019 21:39

Can't get over it being written as Marske-by-the-sea rather than Marske! Used to have a "rough" reputation but no idea if that's still true now.

Look at your commutes properly and consider secondary schools, I think they still go on catchment areas?

Dothehappydance · 09/01/2019 21:40

Q Oh my goodness, I hadn't realised that.

Scrap the idea of Stokesley though.

Kates I agree re the 20min commute thing. I do a little longer and you would think I was coming from Mars when I say where I live (in relation to work)

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 09/01/2019 21:43

Saltburn is lovely.

If you are considering inland, Darlington is an easy commute. They even built a railway. Lots of nice areas.

Yarm and Sedgefield also nice

Toon49 · 09/01/2019 22:11

Thanks for all the advice lots of places to consider! Not worried about the commute used to an hour so anything less than that is a plus and not often travelling at peak times. We have already looked at saltburn and this is definitely high on the list! Currently renting in Darlington we do like it here but it's a bit expensive in the nicer areas compared to other places. We like the idea of living by the coast (nice to walk the dog down the beach haha!) but definitely going to have a look another look inland around yarm etc

KatesMott · 09/01/2019 22:22

Yarm is even more expensive than Darlington (I’ve lived in both) but does have a lovely village like feel around the centre, however it’s expanding more quickly than the infrastructure can cope with and can be really tiresome to get in and out of at peak work and school times and weekends. Eaglesclife is cheaper and really close to Stockton.
Ingleby Barwick, in my opinion, is overpopulated and soulless and has some issues with antisocial behaviour around the supermarket area etc.
Feel free to message me if you think I can be of any help and good luck hunting!

Dothehappydance · 09/01/2019 22:30

Yarm has the River Tees running through it, so you could walk the dog along there, there is also Preston Park at Eaglescliffe.

SofaLoafer · 09/01/2019 22:39

If you were considering Stokesley, do actually read the ofsted report. It’s still a great school, but the areas requiring improvement relate to attendance and support for lower achieving pupils.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 09/01/2019 22:49

Stokesley was my school also, 21 years back though and the new headteacher is already turning it around, strict on school uniform and policies though. guisborough is a lovely town with some lovely primary schools and a decent secondary school, not to far from the coast, not to far from new job.

ChiefSpoon · 09/01/2019 23:14

I lived in Marske. Full of wannabe chavs 😂.

madvixen · 09/01/2019 23:20

Yarm is horrific traffic wise. As a pp said, it really can't cope with its expansion and it's only set to get worse.

If you're in Darlington now, have a look at some of the villages between Darlington and Yarm. The likes of Great Smeaton, Appleton Wiske and Worsall are all lovely. Although they're not by the sea, there are some amazing walking areas and the sea is easily reached if you want a day out.

RandomMess · 10/01/2019 08:45

As long as you live the side of Yarm centre that you want to commute to it's not as bad. So I would anticipate looking at Eaglescliffe, Egglescliffe, Preston, Long Newton, not sure if Redmarshall and Carlton villages are still in the catchment for Egglescliffe Comp?

It's worth actually driving the commutes you are considering at peak commuter time to see how long it will really take. As has been said in you have to drive through Yarm high street forget it!!!

QforCucumber · 10/01/2019 09:17

agree with all of the above, I tried to get into Yarm yesterday lunchtime from stockton - I get a 1 hour break, it took all of that getting in and out and finding parking!
The A66 from Darlington is a nightmare on a morning across Preston Farm so can understand that completely, the likes of Nunthorpe, Guisborough and the surroundings are only a 10 min drive from the beach and lovely homes around.

RandomMess · 10/01/2019 09:48

Start a campaign for flexible working so you can miss rush hour on the roads Wink

I'm still traumatised that they demolished Strikes Garden Centre, the garage and stuck a roundabout and Tesco in 😱 opposite Egg Comp!

Brick factory gone, fields gone, Preston now considered desirable, Yarm getting the station reopened, Yarm Grammar admitting girls all the way though 🤣

SeeSea1 · 10/01/2019 11:26

I would recommend Saltburn over Marske 100%.
If you can, go for a visit - park by the playground and walk through the valley gardens to the beach - it is lovely. The beach is gorgeous and has really been improved since we moved there 25 years ago.
