Utility room: What do you keep in yours?!

And how big is it?

We're planning one as part of our extension and am trying to work out how big it should be and what should go in there beyond a washing machine and a pull-down airer.

OP posts:
HollowTalk · 05/01/2019 11:59

I have a fridge/freezer, a drinks fridge, a washing machine and a dryer. I also use it to store mops etc and I have a shelf for vases.

HollowTalk · 05/01/2019 11:59

Is it going to be warm enough for the airer?

BentNeckLady · 05/01/2019 12:03

Mines 3x2 and houses washer, dryer, clothes horse and heated airer. Wall cupboards with cleaning materials and shoe polish etc and about 3567 paint tester pots Blush. It’s a bit of a shit
Layout as one end of it is pretty much corridor.

We’re converting our garage and the new one will be the same size but laid out better so we can use both sides.

Bluebell9 · 05/01/2019 12:03

I have cupboards to keep cleaning stuff and things for the dog. I love having a big sink in mine so I don't have to use the kitchen one for cleaning things like paint brushes and veg out the garden. I also have a tumble dryer as my utility is freezing and clothes wouldn't dry in the winter.

BentNeckLady · 05/01/2019 12:04

Oh and a chest freezer which is the biggest waste of space every.

Dothehappydance · 05/01/2019 12:14

Ours is on the side and leads to the downstairs bathroom and back door. It has a washer, sink and then a space that could be for a dryer but we use it for shoes. We keep our shark in there too. Space is limited due to the fact it is a walk through in effect.

hallamoo · 05/01/2019 12:34

Dothehappydance - you keep a shark in there?

Redesigned my utility to prevent it being a walkthrough. Best thing I ever did.

Now have a massive airer (No tumble drier). Utility is very warm and airer is against a radiation. Also have floor to ceiling shelves for washing baskets for sorting/ironing. Ironing board and iron mounted on the wall behind the door. Also have a sink and base cupboards to house all washing powders, and other household stuff which isn't needed in the kitchen. Also have a hanging rail across the top of the sink, from one wall to the other to dry things on hangers, or hang things when ironed.

It's now a great functional space rather than a dumping ground.

Pinterest has some great utility room ideas.

LIZS · 05/01/2019 12:36

Sink unit, washing machine, under counter freezer, fridge freezer, tumble dryer, ceiling airer, ironing board.

caesio · 05/01/2019 13:01

Boiler
Sink (yay - like not having to use kitchen sink for mop bucket etc.),
Washing machine, tumble dryer (yay)
Dishwasher (v. annoying choice of previous owner should be in kitchen)
Underbench freezer (again prev owner)
Mop cupboard.
Dog and cat food/bowls
Cupboards for cleaning cloths/shoe polish/vases/pet stuff/pet towels/batteries/tools/other random stuff.
Too cold and damp and no space for airer.

Narrow galley style between kitchen and back door that is used all the time so can't e.g. put load of washing on floor without tripping over. Preferred squarer layout in previous house.

waterandlemonjuice · 05/01/2019 13:51

Microwave
Fridge
Sink
Washing machine
Tumble drier
Ironing board
Cleaning equipment
Ceiling aired

Crikeyblimey · 05/01/2019 14:01

Ours isn’t big and has 3 bloody doors (back door, door to garage and door to kitchen) but I love it!

We have washing machine, dryer, sink (fantastic for rugby boots, rinsing mucky rugby kit prior to washing, all ‘mucky’ jobs like cleaning plant pots etc.). Under-sink cupboard for cleaning stuff. Wall cupboard for ‘odds and sods’ like batteries, light bulbs, matches, sellotape etc. It also used to house the cat food bowls when we still had cats.
I want a Sheila maid airer above the sink / washer / dryer but not got round to that yet.

TheMincePiesAreMine · 05/01/2019 14:12

Our alternative to a floor standing drying rack is a wall mounted artweger ruckzuck. It's still new so don't know how it'll last, but the reviews on Amazon look good. I also have a big hanging rail for stuff on hangers.

Magmatic80 · 05/01/2019 14:16

I LOVE having one. Got builder booked in the instant completed on this house to get wall put back up that mad previous owner took down. Mine has:
Toilet and sink
Washer
Vacuum and wall mount for cordless vacuum
Cool box
Box of beer
Mop and bucket
Car washing bucket and gear for that
DP built shelves above washer which contain washing machine gear, spare loo roll, vacuum attachments, wooden crate with random alcohol
Bag of bags

mamaduckbone · 05/01/2019 14:22

Washing machine, freezer, dishwasher, boiler, a cupboard with a sink over it and a load of crap

mamaduckbone · 05/01/2019 14:23

And wine racks

Fantata · 05/01/2019 14:25

I love you MN. We are having kitchen/utility designed. The utility is a walk through. I'm happy with the mix of units we've selected but I'm concerned about drying space. Was looking at a pulley maid but the ceiling is not that high. Now also considering the artweger ruckzuck.

Also useful to hear what people keep in theirs. Atm we have sink, washer, dryer, tool bag, spare batteries, torch, candles and that sort of stuff, washing powder and related products, cleaning stuff, Hoover, mops etc and behind the door the iron and ironing board. Then we have a little corner with ikea drying set-up.

In new plan it will be similar but no drying corner. Hoover will go under the stairs and mops etc will go in what they are calling the plant cupboard (boiler etc).

AliMonkey · 05/01/2019 14:36

It's about 6'x10' including a small toilet/sink in separate room. Door to kitchen and back door.

Ours has rack for wellies etc, ironing board, tall cupboard used for mop, Hoover, buckets, broom etc, sink, washing machine, two airers (which when in use are put next to radiator), rotary aired when not in use outside, coat hooks, six cupboards with cleaning stuff, washing powder etc, decorating stuff, tool box, drill etc, swim bags, shoe cleaning stuff, batteries, bulbs, matches, torches, party stuff (candles, paper plates and serviette, banners). Basically everything we need a home for! When we moved house this was my favourite new room by far!

bsc · 06/01/2019 09:59

I want to know about the shark!

Mine is also with with thousands of tester pots Blush
Sometimes I look at them when unloading washing, and think "what were you thinking with that colour? Were you on glue?"
It keeps me grounded! Grin

Tobermory · 06/01/2019 10:09

I’ve just moved into a house with a utility room... the Wednesday before Christmas (stressful!) I love my utility room!! At the moment mine is filled with too much stuff though- tools, light fittings, and a million pairs of shoes and all our coats
Shock
No one upthread has mentioned shoes and coats... where does your family hang coats and store shoes?

RollerJed · 06/01/2019 10:13

Washing machine, room for dryer (not sure I need one yet), big linen cupboard, sink, another small cupboard for cleaning products, and I store the broom and ironing board there also and has direct access to outside.

clippityclop · 06/01/2019 10:16

Ours is a separate room next to the kitchen
It has washing machine, tumble dryer, sink with cupboard underneath for laundry/cleaning stuff and shoe polish kit. There's a tall cupboard in two sections, one for big serving dishes, hoover bags, lightbukbs etc and another craft stuff and toys for visiting kids. There's a wall cupboard for pet food. The cats have their bowls out there. I have a free standing folding Italian clothes airer on wheels which I can use in there or push outside in good weather.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 06/01/2019 10:20

@Crikeyblimey
Ours isn’t big and has 3 bloody doors (back door, door to garage and door to kitchen) but I love it!

Ours also has 3 bloody doors. We never ever use back door, and go out via garage. Direct back door has got 3 locks on it and I'm not sure I know where the keys are!
Airer lives in front of it.

Would we be mad to block up direct back door?

ElspethFlashman · 06/01/2019 10:22

We have pulley maid ceiling airer, washing machine, loads of big shelves at one end. Store everything on them from pantry things like baking stuff and cereal to shooing bags and tupperware. We also have kitchen gadgets not used daily in there. We use ikea baskets, the big Kallax-y ones. So if you are doing shelves, it great to have them that height.

We also have space for mop/brushes etc and also a nook for wellies and some hooks for mucky coats.

Some space for a laundry basket is essential - I'm getting a 4x4 shelf done for 4 baskets so I can fold clothes straight from the airer into different people's baskets.

We're also getting a new industrial style sink with a nozzle bendy tap with a high pressure spray. For mucky stuff, basically. Shelves above for washing powder and cleaning products.

I love my utility, but the best part about it is the shelves as it gets rid of a lot of clutter in the kitchen.

Disappointingly, a Shark

Utility room: What do you keep in yours?!
Elllicam · 06/01/2019 10:24

We have washing machine, tumble drier, big fridge freezer, boiler, 3 cupboards and a big sink. Not sure of the size though.
