Recommendations for induction hob and ovens please?

Hi all, we are doing a house renovation and a new kitchen as part of it. Just been told I need to have chosen hob and ovens by early January (along with a lot of other choices... and christmas...). Hoping to pick the MN collective brain.

I would like a 90cm hob, with some flex zones and good power. Oh and slidy controls not tap tap tap. Budget is reasonable (4 figures, though not £4000 like one I just saw Shock) we use the hob a lot so I’m willing to splash out.

For ovens I have no idea. I know I want self cleaning (pyrolitic?) and either telescopic shelves or a really strong door so I can put pots on it. I don’t bake much, a few roasts and casseroles, tbh the grill gets used more than the oven. Definitely don’t need anything fancy like steam or whatnot.

If you love your induction hob or oven and it’s reasonably recent please tell me what model it is! Equally if you hate yours that’s good to know too...

Thank you

I used to work for a kitchen company and we sold and r3commended Neff ovens and induction hobs. They are very good If a bit pricey. Take a look at the Neff website at neff-home.com and go to products - induction hobs. Their pyrolytic ovens are very good too. Personally I don’t think you can go wrong with a Neff. The after sales service service is also very good.

Having said all that I still prefer gas to induction any day as I’m a keen cook and I just think gas is more intuitive and instant. I have a beautiful 100cm range cooker from Rangemaster with two ovens, a grill and five gas burners with one large wok burner. It’s a complete joy to use.

Hope some of that helps?

I believe that a few top restaurants now use induction hobs instead of gas Wink

Mine is only a 60cm wide one, but I have had it 5 years and used it almost daily. It is still beautiful and looks pristine despite heavy use.

Mine is a DeDietrich one (£850 at the time it was bought) where I can combine zones but I know that they did a 93cm ones that offered slide controls (mine is tap) and you can combine zones etc, even just put a pan on and it registers where it is.

Oven wise mine is Whirlpool, again touch control, it does not have telescopic shelves or self cleaning but we made sure that there is worktop either side of the oven, so we can take something out and not have to walk across the kitchen with hot things. It does have several settings which we wanted like bread proving, turbo grill, forced air cooking etc. I love it. And again, we use it almost daily. I think it was £425. Bargain.

Thank you! Neff was on my list to look at as I’ve had their ovens before and am used to them (I like the grill/oven combo setting they do). Good to have a good review. DeDietrich is new to me and wouldn’t have thought of Whirlpool so thanks for the suggestions.

Inadays, I was a dyed in the wool gas hob person until just a few weeks ago when I was persuaded to switch by all the rave reviews... we are having the hob on the island so induction works better for a clean look... but now I’m doubting again!

We have a Neff induction hob, although without the slidey buttons but I know they do a version with. I wanted a 90cm hob but ended up getting an 80 cm one as it saved about 400 pounds (800 ish versus 1200 ish). It's worth looking at both - I've founded 80 cm plenty wide enough, I can fit 5 pans including my huge stockpot on at once.

raaaasss · 14/12/2018 14:10

We have a miele induction hob with flex zones, and it's bloody amazing. Whatever they quoted me in the showroom >2k, it was a good chunk cheaper online, about £1700, we ended up going through currys but ao.com etc all had it for roughly the same price.

It really is the best thing in our kitchen and I too was a gas hob purist.

We got Neff oven and microwave and they're OK. I don't want to pay for bells and whistles so just went to top of midrange. However the microwave combination gets a lot of condensation in after just microwaving a potato for example and beeps excessively. The oven is generally great but wasn't that impressed the cleaning function, maybe I was expecting too much.

I also didn't realise you can't leave the racks in for the cleaning function so still have to clean those yourself. (I'm a lazy cow)

DoctorTech · 14/12/2018 14:11

Zanussi ovens and induction hobs are good. But I would definitely get a pyrolytic oven, they are much easier to clean.

Scallywag1903 · 14/12/2018 14:15

I was die hard gas - but I love love my induction! Soo much easier to clean makes it a no brainer and I find mine really responsive. Dual zones, power surge setting...love it. Just remember to get the ones that have to be specially wired in not just a 'plug in' (like a kettle) as they have more power . Only found this out when we were re vamping our kitchen this year and didn't realise there was a difference? Thought they all had to be wired in as they use more power....(sorry if this sounds confusing, as you can tell, I was confused). Bought mine online from John Lewis, use very day, recommend induction.

minipie · 14/12/2018 14:47

Thank you all! More brands to look at. Anyone got a Siemens, or are they much the same as Neff?

Yup we will get a dedicated power supply wired in. 30 amps I think.

raaaasss you sound like me - top end hob and mid range oven is what I’m after.

We will have a separate microwave, so probably looking for a full size and a small oven, or maybe two full size.

Scallywag what brand is yours? Or do JL do their own?

Scallywag1903 · 14/12/2018 15:00

@minipie - just checked, Zanussi believe it or not. was about £500/£600 ish from memory? We bought it before we did the kitchen, so late 2017/early2018?? I looked at loads - some hoofingly expensive - but I am happy with this. (for context I cook every day - I trained as a chef so my meals are not just warm up and go). I think most are good these days? Just controlability (is that a word) and room for all what you are cooking is the most important. Mine has cut out features, low simmer etc. and cannot find a fault with it yet?

YouCanCallMeJodieWho · 14/12/2018 17:48

I've a five year old 80cm AEG induction hob. Fab. Can't remember what it cost but less than £1k.

Pyrolitic ovens are to die for.

BubblesBuddy · 14/12/2018 18:06

Miele 900 mm induction job here. Cannot stand anything other than touch sensitive controls as they do not harbour grime. Other controls are dated in my view.

I like a well made, solid, oven. I have two ancient Kuppersbusch ones. They are still
perfect after 15 years. They do everything except clean themselves. Next time I would expect to buy Miele and self cleaning would be 100% vital!

BubblesBuddy · 14/12/2018 18:07

Hob not job!

DesperatelySeekingSense · 14/12/2018 18:11

We have a Siemens ex851fvc1e and I love it. Loads of space, really easy to control, heats really quickly and lots of flexibility. My wish list for a hob was pretty much the same as yours, so it’s worth checking out.

TheDogsMother · 14/12/2018 18:22

We had all Neff put in two years ago and have been really pleased with it. We went for the Slide and Hide door circothrrm oven with pyrolytic function which is brilliant. Induction hob has been brilliant to. For great prices (I did loads of comparisons) look at RDO. Based in Reigate, Surrey but nationwide delivery

minipie · 14/12/2018 18:23

Lots of options to check out!

When I say slidy controls, I mean touch controls, where I drag my finger in a line to turn the heat up. Definitely not after a separate knob or dial.

Thanks for response re Siemens! They do have catchy model names don’t they Grin

What does “cut out features” mean?

Also what is the benefit of slide and hide... do I need it if I don’t do much baking?

OP posts:
TheDogsMother · 14/12/2018 18:38

@minipie Slide and hide just let's you get nearer the oven with out having to lean over a door. As our main oven is higher level works better than a door that protrudes.

minipie · 14/12/2018 18:40

Ah ok, yes understand, that might be quite handy actually as I am short (5’ 3) so the upper oven is inevitably going to be a bit tricky for me. Does it add loads to the cost?

At the last house we owned I had a 90cm Samsung hob. It had the flexi zone space for lots of pans. I totally loved it. It was expensive to install because it needed to be wired separately on its own new cooker circuit.

I bought a gorgeous alessi kettle to use on it, because it was quicker to boil than the normal electric kettle.

When we moved house we inherited an aga, but have had a induction hob installed, because I missed the precision control of the induction for making sauces etc. I've gone for a smaller neff which didn't need special wiring, it just plugs in. Obviously as powerful than the 90cm but still good for what we need it for.

bouncydog · 15/12/2018 15:37

Neff slide and hide oven with controls like sliding an iPad and pyrolitic cleaning. Neff hob with a dial on it that you put on when you use it. You just spin the dial !

raaaasss · 15/12/2018 23:19

oh also think about whether you want the hob sunk into/ flush with the counter top or with a bevel (? think that's what they call it), basically a little metal trim around the edge.

I didn't think and would have chosen the first option, however ended up with the 2nd and it's absolutely fine.

Also maybe someone will come along who knows the answer for sure but the odd salesman in John Lewis told me that 3 of the brands (perhaps Neff, Siemens and Bosch) are all made by the same company but considered their top, middle and lower ranges. His point was, they're all the same.

BillyGoatGruff007 · 15/12/2018 23:20

I have a Siemens induction hob and love it. Slidey control panel, flex zones and it’s a pale grey, not black !
Only 600mm though as I don’t have space for a 900 mm.

BillyGoatGruff007 · 15/12/2018 23:25

Oh, and instead of a double oven I have two singles; the smaller multifunction oven is mounted beneath the larger Neff slide and hide as I’m 5’3” and thought I would have trouble reaching over an open oven door when using the top oven.
