Tips for new bathroom - anything you'd recommend?

We're getting a new bathroom put in and I'd love to hear any tips based on what you did.

Any really great ideas?

Anything to avoid/wish you'd done differently?

Thank you!

I'm a fan of tiled floors with under floor heating. Easy to keep clean and warm underfoot.

HerLadySheep · 02/12/2018 22:21

Storage! We foolishly didn't think of this first time and then had to replace the sink with a vanity unit later. I also recommend shower screens that are coated with an easy clean coating, makes a big difference

Bathroom mirror with touch light around it

Prestonsflowers · 02/12/2018 22:24

I wish I’d put underfloor heating in the tiled bathrooms. The other one has laminate and that’s warmer than tiles. I don’t think I can persuade DH to let me get the tiles lifted so I’ll just have to live with them.

Big, deep bath. A tv. A mist free mirror.

Grey grout on the floor. White grout just goes a manky grey.

ineedaholidaynow · 02/12/2018 22:25

Shower panels not tiles on the walls. No grouting to keep clean

mineofuselessinformation · 02/12/2018 22:26

Actually sit on the toilet you are planning to buy. Some of them are remarkably uncomfortable!

Under floor heating. Whatever you do, make sure it's properly heated. In a previous house, refitted a bathroom but heating was inadequate and despite it being v lovely, I hated using it as it was always cold.

Growingboys · 02/12/2018 22:29

These are all great! Thank you so much!

Agree with PPs on grey grout, built in storage, underfloor heating, heated sensor mirror. If budget stretches to it then digital shower and if you are having a shower cubicle then think about building in a recess for shower gels/shampoo etc

TheRhythmlessCarolMan · 02/12/2018 22:38

If using underfloor heating make it more densely coiled just outside the shower area so your shower mat dries faster.

Buying from eBay saved us a huge amount. Most things were still new. Bought nice brands like Burlington and Hudson Reed.

Storage!

If putting an alcove shelf thing in the shower put it on the opposite side to where the shower head is, otherwise it will get more limescale build-up more quickly.

Lighting/wall lamps on either side of the basin mirror is useful. Use a different switch to the overhead lighting- it's nice to use it as ambient lighting when you want a relaxing bath etc.

TheRhythmlessCarolMan · 02/12/2018 22:40

Flooring- if you're interested in wood-effect, have a look into Luvanto luxury vinyl tiles. We used it and it's beautiful. Nicely textured too and works very well in bathrooms and with underfloor heating.

BackforGood · 02/12/2018 22:44

Another who would say panels rather than tiles.

AnnaMagnani · 02/12/2018 22:52

Another vote for storage!

My bathroom is tiny but we managed to cram in a sink unit with cupboards underneath, mirror another cupboard plus thin standalone cupboard wedged by the loo.

Anywhere you can fit storage, do it.

grincheux · 02/12/2018 22:53

A suitably long shower screen if you live in house full of puddleducks who are prone to flooding the bathroom like my lot Grin

PigletJohn · 03/12/2018 00:18

don't put a shelf or cupboard over the basin.

Even after you have stopped banging your head on it, you will drop a glass jar or bottle, and it will crack the basin.

Wingedharpy · 03/12/2018 00:44

Sit on the toilet before you decide where to position the toilet roll holder.
This avoids dislocating your shoulder joint as you fumble for a bit of loo roll.

PigletJohn · 03/12/2018 00:52

a modern extractor fan that is both powerful and quiet.

PigletJohn · 03/12/2018 00:57

if the old floor is chipboard, rip it all out and replace with WBP ply, screwed down.

Every joint must have a joist or a nog under it.

EmMcK · 03/12/2018 01:05

This is a total vanity point. We put a sensor light in for when the children go in at night, with the lights under the vanity so it is a softish light from below. What it does also do though, is make my legs look like they have been wrapped in bubble wrap as it highlights every 46 year old bump and lump is highlighted. Sensor light good, but up lighting unforgiving.

7salmonswimming · 03/12/2018 02:10

Spend as much as you can on ventilation.

Underfloor heating only necessary if you don’t have a heated towel rail commensurate with the size of your room. Also much cheaper

White white white bathroom furniture.

Two light sources at least

fieryginger · 03/12/2018 05:22

Grey grout for sure.

Grey grout for sure.
