Dehumidifier for utility room where we dry all our washing

SomeoneElsesOpinion · 30/10/2018 21:05

Any thoughts or recommendations please?

We tumble dry towels and bedding but not keen on tumble drying clothes (and many not tumble dryable anyway).

In summer door and window open but now it’s cold and they are closed, I’ve started to run the extractor fab in there all night or all day as I’m worried about the moisture from the wet washing. But that makes the room chilly and our bathroom is above it and the bathroom floor is freezing! So I was thinking a lowish cost low energy dehumifyer?

This thread is a bit old now, but if you've landed here looking for recommendations, we've recently updated our best dehumidifiers round-up, full of products tried, tested and recommended by Mumsnet users.
We hope you will find this useful.

Definitely I would recommend it. They are not expensive and will protect your property from getting damp/ mildew. You can get a small one for less than £100.

SlipperyLizard · 30/10/2018 21:32

We have an ebac dehumidifier in the laundry room, would recommend it.

EskSmith · 30/10/2018 21:38

I have a delonghi humidifier which has been running pretty much constantly in my house for 8 years! In the winter I dry all my washing indoors (no tumble dryer) If it ever breaks I'd have to buy a new one immediately!

CMOTDibbler · 30/10/2018 21:39

Dehumidifiers are great. We have a Mitsubishi one, and though it was pricey to buy (£300 ish) it has been going 12 years now and makes a huge difference in drying washing

userofthiswebsite · 30/10/2018 21:39

I've had an ECOAir Simple which lasted dead on 4 years and replaced it with a Meacco.
I don't know how it'll last but I wish I'd bought another EcoAir.
I find it v useful. I am in a no-garden flat so use it every time I have a load except the summer months otherwise it makes the flat too hot.
It also works well as a heating system. Not deliberately of course but if you're running it, it does warm up the place by default.

HermioneWaslib · 30/10/2018 21:43

Meaco recommendation here! Ours is 4 years old and runs like a dream. Great for washing and keeps things warm. Don’t need it on the actual laundry setting in case you need things in a hurry though.

HermioneWaslib · 30/10/2018 21:43

Unless you need things in a hurry I mean

minipie · 30/10/2018 22:03

I need to think about this too. Does anyone know, can you get built in dehumidifiers or are they all plug in?

RainbowsArePretty · 30/10/2018 22:07

Any tips on decent ones that are cheap?

SomeoneElsesOpinion · 31/10/2018 04:12

Does anyone have info regarding which one to get? I was looking at 12L Meaco Platinum Which is about £180. I’d also like to know how often you need to empty them (is that a faff to do?). If it gets full when you are out does it just turn itself off? And finally can I stand it on the work top as short on floor space?

I've had mine (Matsui) for over 20 years. Never had a tumble drier. Emptying it is not a faff & the water it produces is distilled so can be used in a steam iron.

HermioneWaslib · 31/10/2018 07:55

We have the 8l meaco one, was around £100. Don’t have to empty that often, don’t know really which suggests it’s not that frequently!

Automatically turns off if full or if it reaches a preset humidity level.

Toothfairee · 01/11/2018 11:46

we have one that now drains into the sink in the laundry room, DH did a bit of DIY on it to save us keep empting it.

SomeoneElsesOpinion · 02/11/2018 05:50

Draining into the sink is a great idea! Do any of them come designed with that option?

We have a Neostar dessicant dehumidifier, cost about £100 refurbished from eBay and been going strong for a few years now. We just use it over winter when drying clothes indoors and it's great. All the condensation disappears in a few hours.

SomeoneElsesOpinion · 04/11/2018 21:25

Ordered the Meaco 20L Low Energy Dehumidifier today. Should be delivered midweek. Will set it up in the laundry room and report back.

We have one as we have no tumble dryer. Do make sure you get one that turns itself off when full. So also recommend an additional spin in the washer for some stuff so it all dries quicker.

EvaHarknessRose · 04/11/2018 21:31

We have that one and keep it on permanently under our clothes airer - just remember to tweak the humidity setting between winter and summer. It fills frequently but we don’t get mould on the bedroom windows upstairs any more :)

User5trillion · 04/11/2018 21:39

We do this! Love my dehumidifier, it really helps dry the washing in winter. Ours was ebac and about £180.

SomeoneElsesOpinion · 04/11/2018 21:41

Thanks Eva. What would you recommend in terms of what we should we be setting it to? Do you have it on literally 24/7 just stopping when it gets full? What is the running cost like? Is yours in one room with the door closed or are you aiming to do the whole house?

OP posts:
anniehm · 04/11/2018 21:42

Ours is from Homebase, well worth the money

EvaHarknessRose · 04/11/2018 22:01

The recommended settings will be in the manual, around 55 from memory. I think it can do a whole medium sized house, with doors open (bearing in mind the moisture comes from laundry, bathrooms and cooking but 'condenses' and forms mould in the coldest corners of your home eg our upstairs bay window - so you are right to site it near the laundry, not near the mould). It beeps and switches off when it needs emptying). Good luck :)

SomeoneElsesOpinion · 04/11/2018 22:09

Thank you. I’m such a saddo as I’m really quite excited about getting it!

I love my dehumidifier. I got it after drying washing indoors started to cause damp in the room. I have this one from B&Q. It's the only one I've had so can't compare it to any others. Although it says 10l the tank is just under 2l. The 10l is what it can extract per day. I'd say it usually takes in 1l overnight, although sometimes it fills the tank. Easy to empty the tank and has a fitting at the back so you can drain straight into a sink etc. It has a filter that you need to hoover now and then.
