DH and I went to ikea today. The Pax wardrobe I want is coming in at £700+ So before I return and spend all my money please tell me your pax wardrobes tips and tricks/ do’s and don’t’s.

We got one earlier in the year, you need two people to assemble it and some small steps as it is so tall, we made ours upright as the room was too small to lay it down, if you can lay it down to assemble I think it is easier, also check your ceiling clearance. It is good though, we love ours

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 20/10/2018 20:02

I’ve got them in three rooms. No complaints. The tall ones are really good.

LightastheBreeze · 20/10/2018 20:06

We had ours delivered as the parts are quite long and heavy for getting in a car, I would like more than one as they ar3 so spacious and versatile

LIZS · 20/10/2018 20:12

Check the height clearance, you need space to assemble, put upright then hang doors. Ours have moved 3 times but are increasingly unstable.

bookgirl1982 · 20/10/2018 20:13

If you have space go for hinged doors not sliding. We had sliding ones and they got very noisy on the runners after a while. (A few years ago so may be better now). And the metal rails are better than the wood ones.

ToBeClear · 20/10/2018 20:14

We built a full walk-in using Pax. Best test of a marriage ever lol but they are brilliant, spacious and easy to assemble once you've done one. Doing it again in our new house now I know my marriage can survive it

LightastheBreeze · 20/10/2018 20:17

We made ours in a room which was about 7 x 8 ft, it was a tad restrictive Grin. When we bought it I hadn’t actually thought of that, I just measured that it fitted the space

hormonalhorrorshow · 20/10/2018 20:38

I've done a LOT of pax assembly recently. Had 4x 75cm full height with 4x sliding doors in bedroom, and recently dismantled these, split into 2 pairs then rebuilt. Also bought new 201cm 4x 50cm and 2x 75cm.
Annoying thing is the size you buy determines whether you have sliding or hinged doors.

They are extremely heavy but even the 236cm fit in my qashqai. Delivery great in theory but I resented paying when I have to get them off the shelves myself and wheel them around the shop, and have to lug them up stairs (2 storeys!) myself. If there are 2 of you and you don't drive a micra, it's doable.
Definitely check the clearance - I wasted time building laying down then realised they wouldn't fit under ceiling just for tipping them - if you look at pdf instructions online it gives you the exact clearance you need. They can be built standing up but trickier and you'll need 2 people.
Sliding doors are nice looking but really push up the cost, and are tricky to hang. I found them annoying for some reason too, so I went for hinged on second batch (also restricted by size)
The hinged mirror doors are very good for the price and I was able to hang on my own.

I didn't think they are very strong once taken apart and moved but ok, and I guess they're not designed for that.
I love the bits that go in them - I have a pull out laundry bag (called a "storage" bag) which is great. Trousers hanger is useful and also the drawers are nice. Lights!
If you want to cover with a curtain, I found the clothes rail fitted to the front holes does the job perfectly.
When buying, check the stock and location online first as ikea are crap at having full stock ime.

PurpleFlowersInMyHair · 20/10/2018 21:00

We’ve had them twice- they look like built in wardrobes. Last house my DH and FIL put it together- the doors never quite hung right and it was very annoying.

Second house had a professional fit them. They are perfect. They hold so much. Mine are used for DH and my clothes, shoes, towels and bedding (we have two deep wide fit drawers for these). Also toiletries and bags. We’ve managed to fit absolutely loads into it.

We are moving to our third house. Should we leave them or take them? They would fit perfectly but will they survive the move? It’s actually only round the corner but I’m more worried about getting them up and down stairs. We are using a professional removal company

Love my pax. Bought 2 years ago, cost 800 and something. We have 2.5 meters of cupboard space and it is amazing!

DH and 8 have a metre each and I have the extra half meter as well. In the smaller cupboard I have a jewellery insert and a wire basket for my hairdryer and straighteners. There is an extension cord on this wire basket that is plugged in behind the cupboard. I love it and it's my mini dressing table!

We looked at Pax but in the end went for John Lewis Mix It
www.johnlewis.com/search?search-term=Mix%20it%20
Because we wanted matching drawers and bedside tables. They are similar in price to Pax, but I think they are better quality. We have grey Shaker in one bedroom and white shaker in the other, with 2 drawers in the bottom. We got the taller ones with soft close hinges.

Ooh the John Lewis wardrobes looks lovely

Leobynature · 20/10/2018 21:55

Thanks all. It seems I can’t go wrong with a Pax wardrobe.
Although I will check out John Lewis. Those wardrobes look quality.

Yes the John Lewis ones do look lovely, I do love my Pax but it does look a bit well, industrial

WhyAreWeddingsSoAwks · 20/10/2018 22:04

My tip is to measure your room/space carefully and plan exactly what you want using the Pax planning app Grin

Can I just ask - how accurate are the width measurements? We have 2.01m width to fill. Will we be able to squeeze in a 2m pax unit?

LightastheBreeze · 21/10/2018 06:32

Ours does appear to be the size stated. Another thing to consider is manoeuvring it into place, we made ours upright and then wouldn't have been able to push it directly back, you need a bit of room to push it against the wall as you can't make it right up against the wall. We had to sort of walk it into position at an angle if you see what I mean

They come as 2 wardrobes that you join together so first half would be easy to get into place but then you have to get the 2nd one in, they are very heavy. If you can make it laying down it may be easier but check clearances carefully you need about 2.44 to the ceiling and you would still need to manoeuvre it a bit. Also it would be near impossible to fix it to the wall which is recommended, though you may not want to do that, depending on siting and if you don't have children.

Would a 1.5m one be better and then have think about what to do with the gap.

TintarellaDiLuna · 21/10/2018 06:46

Definitely get the professional installation - they had it built perfectly in under 20mins!! And they didn't argue either. Wink

LightastheBreeze · 21/10/2018 07:00

I would have liked professional installation but DH was having none of it, I still have a vision of him on the steps with the top piece balancing on his head Grin. It took hours to make and then the sliding doors weren't the easiest to do.

Mamia15 · 21/10/2018 08:20

Use the delivery service - they will carry it all upstairs for you.

Google Pax hacks for tips on how to make these look like proper built in wardrobes - we filled in the gaps between the wardrobe and walls/ceiling and it looks great.

It took DH a day to assemble and fit 3 of these - as these were really tall, I had to hold these up while he assembled them.

I love the strip lights, the pull out holder (for belts) and the jewellery drawer. Make sure that when the drawers are fitted that you allow enough room for dresses hanging on the rails above.

Mamia15 · 21/10/2018 08:23

And we only had a couple of inches clearance - we managed fine but these had to be assembled upright.

Mamia15 · 21/10/2018 08:25

We chose hinged doors - and also we didn't go for the shaker style doors because I hate the way dust and dirt collects in the corners.

DesperatelySeekingSense · 21/10/2018 09:01

We’re trying to decide between Mix It and Pax. I like the look of the Mix It wardrobes, but I really like some of the interior fittings for the Pax. Could someone with a Mix It confirm what the interior width measurements if the stated width is 100cm or 50cm? It would really help my decision making!

hormonalhorrorshow · 21/10/2018 09:06

Bobkate
The measurements I think are true, but be careful to measure the floor wall to wall as I found a tighter squeeze than expected due to skirting board (or is it just me that needs to be told something so obvious?)

Scatteredthoughtss · 21/10/2018 09:10

It is not difficult to put up, so unless you are particularly incompetent you can do it yourself. Having previously had problems with non Ikea sliding doors this was a pleasant surprise. However you definitely need two of you. I'm really pleased with ours.
