If it was my house, I'd do a big L shaped sofa in the bottom left corner, then TV stand along the right wall. That way you get a nice view out the window from the sofa.

another20 · 25/09/2018 12:54

That sounds good - do you also think that we need a focal point for evenings - eg a stove or fireplace somewhere? Or do you think there is not enough space?

What heating HAVE you got in there?

another20 · 25/09/2018 13:17

Room is being built as we speak - will if went with L shaped sofa on bottom LH corner - would then put a rad in top RH corner? Any stove / fireplace would decorative only......I find it hard to imagine a sitting room without a fireplace focal point? Or is that silly?

Will a L shaped sofa make the room appear larger or smaller?

Your window is the focal point surely? The other option is a little log burner in the other corner with a couple of comfy chairs and a coffee table

wombatron · 25/09/2018 13:35

Would depend on how you read etc but I would have a lounge area and separate reading area.

Tv on the wall opposite the window. Log burner on the wall in the centre of the window wall. If it's south facing I'd have the window as French doors to open in/out depending where they lead. Then in the opposite end a reading nook with 2 lovely chairs, a coffee table and a nice lamp. Maybe a bookcase/sideboard for storage if there was room. And some large art on the two 3m walls to give each of the sofas a focal point if the tv wasn't on and you were entertaining.

Here's my picture with the sofa and the armchair you're having opposite the tv Grin

Yes the window is the focal point in the day - just thinking about how it would look on a winters evening with blinds down / curtains closed.

Wom have you put two sofas facing each other and then an armchair facing TV with back to window?

How about corner sofa other way in red facing black TV so you don't have too much sun glare on it and can sit looking at either then in the other corner if there's space have a little wood burner and some comfy chairs. My size perception is crap so alt I'd have a nice corner unit for books, ornaments etc, a writing desk, or a large potted plant

I’m at the same stage and thinking fireplace, have a woodburner but can’t afford to install it for now. Have decided to get builder to build in ‘chimney breast’ so there is an alcove and have got some slate for a hearth and a fire surround to cut down to make a mantel, something along the lines of the picture. Have a electric fire thing that looks like a stove to go in for now then eventually will put woodburner back in most likely.

Not going to cost much as fire surround was £15, slate was free, then the cost of a bit of labour, plasterboard and wood batten whilst he’s doing the rest of the room. Gumtree, Freeads, Facebook selling pages are very helpful for this sort of thing.

Yes can easily knock up a fire pace surround - should this be on the main wall facing you when you walk in though?
Is an L shaped OK for slightly formal entertaining? Or should it be sofa and 2 armchairs?

I think you need to measure a sofa and put it on your plan. I don’t think you have room to have two areas, unless I’m getting the measurements mixed up. Our sofa is about 1.2 m deep, for example, by 2.4m wide.

Blameanamechange · 26/09/2018 08:12

Fireplace will affect where you can place furniture at a later date. Tv shouldnt face the sun ( obvs I dont know where the sun comes in ) because of refections.

TheMotherChip · 26/09/2018 08:22

I think a fireplace would make the room too cramped and limit your options for furniture placement. As you’ve got the lovely big window perhaps go for an airy light look. The wall facing the door would look fab with floor to ceiling bookcases, then a long sofa facing the window. Long coffee table in front of sofa. Tv in the top right corner so that it is not the first thing you see when you walk in the room but is easily visible from the sofa. Then just add plants, side tables and a floor lamp. I’ve got a very similar room with doors rather than the window and it’s a lovely space but not huge once sofa etc in place so I’d be wary about over cluttering.

another20 · 26/09/2018 09:11

Thanks - yes I am v conscious that it is not big - 3m / 10ft x 4m / 14ft - so I really don’t want to crowd it. Think I am trying to do too much - light airy sun room vs evening TV snug vs trying to get it to work as a slightly formal lounge as well. I def don’t think that there is enough room for two seating sections tho.

Like the bookcase idea at the end - that would give it a cosy, formal grown up look for evenings. Like the TV being out of the way on RH side - but would you be able to see it

Hsvent bought sofa yet - so would just get one to fit which ever wall(s) it would go along.

Need to work out how to use it for guests - ie somehow facing each other ?

I think it’s a better shape than your drawing though.
I’d put tv next to window, sofa on long wall, sofa on wall to left and possibly a chair in n top r corner.

PrimalLass · 26/09/2018 10:08

I would put a stove in the top right corner.

PostNotInHaste · 26/09/2018 10:52

I’m not good with metric for room sizes, seeing that in feet agree not a fireplace.

babyboyHarrison · 26/09/2018 12:38

Be careful with tv position, consider how much glare you will get. I wouldn't recommend the tv facing the window.

serbska · 26/09/2018 12:41

I would not have any fire place. The massive window is the focal point.

I would have a massive (at least 2m x 3m or 2.5m x 3.5m) L shaped sofa. A side table and coffee table. TV on wall by door.

BiscuitDrama · 26/09/2018 12:44

I think if it’s 4m then it’s nearer 13ft if that’s any help to those who work in feet.

another20 · 26/09/2018 13:37

Thanks all - yes think not enough space for fireplace - and TV on 3m wall to RHS inside door seems the best place for it.

My only worry is how to make it work for entertaining in eve - as when curtains closed not sure where the focal point would be.

Also is an L shaped a bit informal for guests? We love them and have one in main kitchen / lounge / diner for sprawling out on. Would like this room to be a sophisticated retreat.....

another20 · 26/09/2018 14:11

Just had another thought (think PP worked it out some time ago.....maybe fake fireplace on wall to RHS of door - or modern skandi corner one in top RH corner - seating opp window and on LHS wall - so focus is on window in day and when curtains down focus is back over to fire and TV ?

Hi, I don't know your budget, it's just an idea.....have you considered a projector for tv/movie nights?. You said you didn't want the tv to dominate, and wanted an entertaining space etc. If you mounted the projector on the ceiling above the sofa, you could also mount a pull down/remote control screen in front of the curtains/blinds, giving you not only the screen, but cutting out further light for viewing purposes. You could then possibly (if your builder would make a 45 deg angle stud wall) place a fire in the corner facing into the room.
