Would people with composite doors recommend them?

Have now got a fitter coming round to do measurements and am slightly getting cold feet. 1.1k for a door sounds a lot. Currently have a hardwood door and don’t like the look of pvc. So this seems like a good compromise in that it looks nice and should hopefully be better for heat loss than a wooden one?

Are they long lasting, do they scratch? I’m not sure I like the idea that it will be white (pvc) in the inside. Which I hadn’t realised until today. I’d been assuming it would be a nice green colour both sides.

I've just ordered a composite door (it's being fitted in a month) I was given the option of a coloured door both inside and out but because I have a very dark hallway I've opted for a white side inside.

The salesman explained that there were different standards of door and I've opted for a mid range door, it's costing £1230.

I originally had Safestyle to quote plus another local company- both were more expensive than the company I'm going with.

Any door will be better than the door I have at the moment, we've had a curtain inside for the past three years to alleviate the drought.

*draught

BigBlueBubble · 27/08/2018 20:14

I have one and I love it. Had it two years and it still looks brand new. Mine is from Solidor and it’s coloured on both sides. If your fitter only offers doors that are white inside then you need to find a different fitter!

IStillDrinkCava · 27/08/2018 20:20

Ours is about 7 years old and still in great condition. The house got noticeably warmer the day it was fitted, but then the old hardwood one was rubbish and cracked so there were draughts going literally through it. Anything would have been an improvement Grin

IStillDrinkCava · 27/08/2018 20:23

Ours is white inside but that was our choice, and I think it's a matt-ish painted wood effect. It doesn't look like the inside of a PVCu door.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 27/08/2018 20:32

We have one from timber composite doors. It's great. A beautiful peacock green!

redsummershoes · 27/08/2018 20:35

it's great. much much better insulated than the previous timber door. especially against noise.
much more secure, home insurance became cheaper.
and it looks like the real deal without the maintanance

lifechangesforever · 27/08/2018 20:37

I adored mine in the last house, I was most upset about leaving it than the house itself, especially after paying for it Envy

BubblesBuddy · 27/08/2018 20:49

A top quality one with lovely glass and door furniture will be more than £1000. We bought a Solidor for a rental house and it’s excellent. House looks the best in the road!

BackToTheFuschia7 · 27/08/2018 21:00

Mine is over 2 years old and still looks like new. It doesn’t scratch despite having pets etc.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/08/2018 21:04

I’d been put off solidor by bad reviews about warping.

Wedodoors are sending someone round to measure up, quote is about 1.2k. I think they only do white insides but will double check. Though a Matt white wood effect on the inside sounds better than the pvc I assumed.

I’ve asked Rockdoor for a quote but I’m expecting that to be about 1.6k-1.8k and while they’re meant to be the best on the market reviews say it’s not worth the extra £500ish you pay and you’re paying for the name. They definetely do the doors coloured both sides and I like the look of their style better than the WedoDoors door.

Also asked DoorStop to do a quote. Not sure if they do the colour both sides but again I like the look of their door more than the WeDoDoors one.

Current wooden door you can see daylight through the cracks in it!

Maybe I ought to rethink solidor as two of you are happy with yours.

Shop around until you find exactly what you want - not what a company wants to sell you (same colour on outside and inside).
Would definitely recommend composite doors.
Ensure you have the accessories you would like - I forgot internal safety-chain.
Only slight disappointment is that the external metalwork (letterbox) - is "spotted" with rain, and can't get it removed.

lovemyboys25 · 27/08/2018 21:19

Happy with ours we got this year was £1.3 from a local company
Neighbours already had a new one & said it's less draughty.
Only thing that annoys me is the Yale lock as it's a flat key & often get it the wrong way round plus copies are £15+ online

Cbeebiessavesmyafternoon · 27/08/2018 21:23

We have one, 2 years old and still looks fab.

Ordered, measured and purchased with Yale. Lots of features to choose from.

Very pleased as I hated the uvpc one that the house had when we moved in.

NicoAndTheNiners · 27/08/2018 21:23

The door I’ve had a quote from has no Yale lock, just an ordinary mortice type lock.

Now beginning to wonder if white might be better inside? Guess it’s more neutral? Would a green door look odd inside?

OddBoots · 27/08/2018 21:27

I love mine but we had to go for white inside and out because our door gets a serious full on hit of sun in the summer and a coloured one would probably crack. It still looks nicer than a uPVC one and has all the thermal and strength properties but I would have liked a green one.

sparklepops123 · 27/08/2018 21:29

Yes we paid about £1k and it's been fine ... about 5 yr in

MyNameIsJane · 27/08/2018 21:33

Mine is about 11 years old and I have no problems with it.

WehIstMir · 28/08/2018 14:15

I had my beautiful solid composite Rockdoor installed last year and am delighted with it. It replaced an ugly white cheap-looking uPVC door and was installed by a very helpful, professional and considerate local installer.
The overall cost (door, door furniture, installing) was £1,504.
Worth every penny: the house is much warmer, looks so much better (I also think it's the nicest door in the whole street) and I love the gorgeous red colour (I chose white for the interior side because the hallway is quite dark but you can choose any available colour option). The door is very easy to clean and very robust.
As much as I like wooden doors (they would not have been practical for my house as no porch), I am really happy with the composite door.

EdisonLightBulb · 28/08/2018 14:22

I have one, black outside white inside. It still looks great about 8 years on. Never needs to be painted, fits really well, solid, draft proof, can be washed down with the hose and warm soapy water.

I doubt, unless I moved into a period property, I would consider anything else.

NicoAndTheNiners · 28/08/2018 15:00

Now I’m very undecided about whether or not to have a white inside or not. Hallway is dark so I get that maybe white wood lighten it. But new door is going to be Chartwell Green on outside so fairly light. Current door is dark wood so anything will be an improvement.

I don’t know what will look odder, a green door in the hallway. Or a door two different colours. To be honest I’m so used to the brown wood door I think even a white door inside will take some getting used to but I suppose white is more neutral inside.

sparklepops123 · 28/08/2018 15:15

Mines white on the inside and black on front, I'd recommend white

fairislecable · 28/08/2018 17:21

I am have just ordered replacement windows and a composite door.

The existing doors and windows are a dark wood colour, I was going to choose the same colour door inside and out but realised however much I like the door outer colour it is very limiting on interior decor.

I am looking forward to the white interior brightening up the hallway.

Whatsthispain · 28/08/2018 17:38

Ours is a few months old and it's like having an air lock. We too went for white inside and it's great. It never occurred to me that I could choose that. It means that inside is nice and bright and fresh. The only thing I forgot was the spy hole.
