house sale to fund nursing home - help!

maisym · 05/06/2007 20:58

having to sell a relatives home as they'll have to pay for nursing home care. They are in hospital at the moment with terminal cancer & the hospital has arranged for them to go to a nursing home.

  • can we oppose this? - we think they're best off in hospital.

  • if we have to sell their house what's the fastest way as they'll need every penny to pay for their care.

  • what happens when the money runs out?

thannks for your help

have you had a full social services assessment?

Clayhead · 05/06/2007 21:04

When we had to sell my grandad's house we auctioned it for speed of sale.

maisym · 05/06/2007 21:05

not sure as the social worker has been to the hospital & we're the closest relatives but we've just been told about the nusring home move today - not asked our opinion.

She has cancer, mrsa & a mini stroke so far.

I've told the nurses that she can't afford to pay - she says she has enough money but it's not the case at all.

I assume you are in the UK
Does your relative have a social worker?

When the money runs out then the council will pick up the bill (although they may have to move to a different home)

Smurfgirl · 05/06/2007 21:06

hospital stay is these days usually only for the acutely unwell

hospice care?

i would ask for a meeting with her social worker

maisym · 05/06/2007 21:06

we're thinking of this clayhead - but was the auction price much less than with an estate agent?

Sorry cross posted

You are best of speaking to the SW

maisym · 05/06/2007 21:08

she has a social worker from the hospiatal.

We're just suddenly surprised that despite all the things happening that involve round the clock nuring - her sores on her legs need lots of attention. Plus now mrsa that they tell us she's being moved out!

How much money can you have up to the limit of paying?

If they have terminal cancer, have poor prognosis and are dependent you need to ask for a continuing care assessment. Your relative may be eligible for fully funded nhs care in a nursing home.

blondehelen · 05/06/2007 21:11

think savings is £16,000

maisym · 05/06/2007 21:12

thanks blondehelen - we'll follow this up

  • don't know anything about this! Should we ask the nursing staff or the social worker?

ruddynorah · 05/06/2007 21:12

you need a meeting with the social worker.

maisym · 05/06/2007 21:13

they have less than 16,000 - but have told the staff they have much more. We told the staff they have few savings but how can this be checked before they're sent off to a home they can't afford (the house sale wont yeild that much)

I would think hospice rather than nursing home if she is terminal.

maisym · 05/06/2007 21:14

thanks rn & to everyone else - I'll follow up all your comments xxx

Are there any hospices near you? This sue ryder home was near where I used to live and they cared for a couple of people that I knew - it's a wonderful place.

Tiggiwinkle · 05/06/2007 21:21

I am sure your relative fits the criteria for "Continuing Care" which means the NHS has to fund the placement even if it is in a nursing home as opposed to hospital. Speak to the social worker about it-she should be aware of it. You may have to be quite insistant as it is obviously in the hospitals interest not to fund the placement and they may try and plead ignorance or deny that she fits the criteria.

blondehelen · 05/06/2007 21:24

Unfortunately hospice beds are hugely precious and rare and IME will only take people who need symptom management or who literally have days to live. You need to speak to the ward sister or make an appointment to see the consultant. it is the consultant and the nursing staff who will assess your relative and complete the papers

maisym · 05/06/2007 22:04

thanks for all the help.

the hospital have been very difficult to deal with as I can't visit without an 8hr train journey plus at the moment I've been told by my doc I can't travel for health reasons. The hospiatl say they'll only give info to familys who are able to come to the hospital. A very difficult situation. The ward sister has even out the phone down on us & also refused to give any info when we were told had days to live. Really stressful & horrid for us.

No, the sale price wasn't much different than we expected and it was all done and dusted very quickly.
