EA sent details to my ex

I want to throw up and need to vent as the office is closed for the day.

I'm selling my home. It was awarded to me as part of divorce. Exs name is still on until i sell. Which I'm doing.

I'm purchasing a property in my name only. I don't want ex to know the address as he's controlling (especially financially) and he was abusive. Without going into detail he did not get the dcs overnight for a couple of years until he could prove he wasn't a threat.

My Estste agent has named my ex as a purchaser and has sent out copies of the document to him which includes the address of the house im buying, vendor details and my solicitor details,

I did not want him to know any of this.

I've immediately gone into a catastrophing mindset. Is this as bad as I fear?

Not surprised that you're angry!

AnalyticalChick · 24/08/2018 17:52

I would abandon the purchase if I were you, since he now knows where you would be living.

Toohot12244 · 24/08/2018 17:53

I don’t blame you at all... massive breach of GDPR as well....

Toohot12244 · 24/08/2018 17:53

I don’t blame you for be angry is what I mean!

AnalyticalChick · 24/08/2018 17:53

PS I too had a controlling ex-husband.

RabbitsAreTasty · 24/08/2018 17:53

You will have to pull out of the purchase. Get compensation from the EA. This was a major data protection breach.

PrincessScarlett · 24/08/2018 17:58

I'd be fuming too. Complain, pull out of deal and demand compensation. Massive data breach. Change EA next time round.

AnalyticalChick · 24/08/2018 18:01

You could get the EA to send your ex fake details about you pulling out of the purchase, and then you carry on with it.

MyOtherProfile · 24/08/2018 18:02

This is really shocking. Have you spoken to the EA. You must take this further.

Vitalogy · 24/08/2018 18:02

You will have to pull out of the purchase. Get compensation from the EA. This was a major data protection breach. Exactly.

numptynuts · 24/08/2018 18:03

Serve their arses to them on a plate. Awful.

Doyoumind · 24/08/2018 18:04

That's horrible, OP. I also have an abusive ex I strive to keep information from so I can imagine how you feel, though he does know where I live.

I would pull out and I would be reporting the EA. You definitely deserve compensation to cover your legal costs etc.

Was it a dream home or are you likely to find anything else?

supadupapupascupa · 24/08/2018 18:05

Can I ask how do you know that they have done this? What happened?

sisterofmercy · 24/08/2018 18:06

Report the estate agent to the Information Commissioner. I agree that is a data protection breach. ico.org.uk/

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 24/08/2018 18:20

The person that this is bad for. Really bad for is the estate agent.

Please you must take this further. I'm a data protection officer and happy to give you some advice if you need support but this is a massive breach of gdpr and you are entitled to a solution that suits you.

InProgress · 24/08/2018 18:23

I've sent messages to their various email addresses and also to a fb message (not on their page).

I'm going to try to go calm down as I know I can't get through to them. I'll be back online later. Thanks for the support

You need to go through their complaints procedure first. Detail exactly what you want them to do (they can't undo what's been done obviously), how you expect them to recompense you for having to pull out of that house sale (if that's what you intend to do), and what do they will do going forward to prevent his happening again.

After that if you are still not satisfied with their response you go to the ICO.

There is a good template on the ICO website ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/raising-concerns/

LizzieMacQueen · 24/08/2018 18:34

Excuse my ignorance but if you have kids with him won't he know your address?

PerfectPenquins · 24/08/2018 18:46

Lizzie they can arrange drop off and pick up in a public place it dosnt have to be at her home

InProgress · 24/08/2018 18:48

Estate agent has been in touch. They said that although they said they had sent all the information to my ex they didn't actually send it.

I guess I'll find out if it's true the next time he rings the dcs.

Not necessarily, especially in abuse cases.

bastardkitty · 24/08/2018 19:28

Have they given any kind of plausible explanation OP?

OliviaBenson · 24/08/2018 19:38

That sounds suspect. I'd still be complaining as it's still a breach. They need to prove it didn't get sent out either.

PrincessScarlett · 24/08/2018 20:07

Agree that sounds suspicious. It's possible they've realised what a major cock up there's been and are trying to cover it up.

Doyoumind · 24/08/2018 21:03

That sounds like someone lying to cover their arse and not understanding the full implications.
