What colour kitchen units would you have if you could choose anything?

I started a very similar thread in chat yesterday so I hope it’s ok to repeat here. Got some lovely suggestions but I still can’t make up my mind. I need to decide within the next couple of weeks so any ideas/suggestions/pictures will be greatly appreciated!

I’m leaning towards white marble worktops but nothing is set in stone.

I have black with oak worktops. We don't have top units, so it's all bright and light with large window and white wall.

Terramirabilis · 24/07/2018 20:33

I love the look of dark blue units although maybe it's too trendy.

That looks soooooo good @Terramirabilis
It really depend on a person. Some don't like dark, some do.

Only thing is that I would prefere much bigger sink. Got the giant ceramic now and couldn't be happier with it.

NapQueen · 24/07/2018 20:40

Dark green. Id have this whole kitchen (Gi and Tom Fletchers). Not sure why shes on the floor.

Love the light too

PaulaRobeson · 24/07/2018 20:48

Is that you NapQueen?! Your username seems eerily appropriate for that picture!

I like that Terra.

Haha if only!

Mumoftwolittleladies · 24/07/2018 21:00

I'm thinking about going dark in the kitchen too. Probably dark blue, with a concrete worktop. But slightly worried both are just fashionable and in a year or two I'll be left with a dull, dark kitchen, forever! (Never ever refurbishing again, ever).

OftenHangry · 24/07/2018 21:11

You could always just change the cupboard door if you fancy change in a future. I got mine from IKEA (recycled materials) and I can basically just buy new door and/or handles for under £300 all.

OftenHangry · 24/07/2018 21:12

Or you can paint them

PaulaRobeson · 24/07/2018 22:10

I'm almost afraid to admit now but every time I see a kitchen I really like it’s nearly always black and white! Would painted (not gloss) black units be a pain to keep looking good I wonder?

OP posts:
OftenHangry · 24/07/2018 22:19

I have non gloss black and it's fine. I think it might depend on a material or paint though

PaulaRobeson · 24/07/2018 22:41

What sort of material are yours Often?

I have just had a brand new kitchen put in - Hague blue plain shaker style units and white marble look silestone worktop. No wall cabinets apart from a boiler one on the same side as a big fridge freezer. I have a lovely run of 4.7 metres of no wall cupboards...

I love it. The colour looks amazing and contrast brilliantly with yellow flowers and accessories. And if I hate it in a few years time I can paint it. But at the moment ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Notname · 24/07/2018 23:18

We’re kust about to have a new kitchen and have gone for this range from Stori. I was going to go for the same colour scheme as this picture but opted instead for shell (off white) on the wall units and very dark green for the island. Can’t wait!!

another20 · 25/07/2018 00:25

I have gone for matte black cupboards - only one wall full height - warm zebrano wood island and black surfaces elsewhere - v pale wood floors / off-white walls - but the room is massive with glass roof/walls.

OftenHangry · 25/07/2018 00:41

@PaulaRobeson it's recycled plastic

Surprisingly great quality

AreWeDoingThisNow · 25/07/2018 09:29

We have matte black doors and wood tops (ikea). We were a bit worried it would be overly dark as it's a galley style kitchen but we did the walls yellow and I think it's ok.

Justanothernameonthepage · 25/07/2018 09:43

Dark green here. Although I'd actually have dark green on one wall and a lighter green along the other (weird Lshape with door in the corner). With copper and verdigris glass recycled glass counter. And black skirting with black and white tiles. Turquoise light fixture and gold door handles.
(I have been planning it for a while. )

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 25/07/2018 11:08

I'm just thinking about it for the next holiday let (kitchen designer coming on Tuesday) and not sure whether to go dark grey with oak or go for their paintable range and F&B them in a dark blue, but I do like the dark kitchens with soft white walls, and it will suit this house well.

WellTidy · 25/07/2018 13:39

I would go for a dark greay/dark blue. A cross between Stiffkey Blue (F&B) and a deep grey like railings as base units, and then a stone white as wall units. With a white marble work surface. And a light stone floor.

We are talking hypothetically though, aren't we? As in reality, I would never ever have a white marble worksurface as I live in a very messy house with a careless DH. And I would have cold feet about such a dark and distinct colour for the units, thinking all manner of things like I will get bored of them, they will be too limiting, the dark colour may depress me and over-think it all completely.

PaulaRobeson · 25/07/2018 23:54

Thanks for all the links and suggestions.

NotName, I like that picture - I hope what you eventually go for turns out well.

Justanother - I love the sound of the copper and verdigris recycled glass.

WellTidy it's difficult to actually make a decision isn't it?!

I would love cornflower blue, I accept that I'm not at all fashionable but I love that really country look. The house we've got under offer has a biscuity brown paint on the kitchen. It's fine. I know my husband won t let me have blue though!

AnnieAnoniMoose · 27/07/2018 10:23

I would love the dark blue, BUT the rest of the (open plan) house is (or rather will be) grey and the dark blue won’t go and I think it needs to have lighter coloured cabinets anyway.

Bloody frustrating though as the only ones I LOVE are the dark blue ones.

I’ve just been staying with my Mum and it’s helped me to rule white gloss out. No bloody way am going having that now.

Trumpetboysmum · 27/07/2018 11:41

Pale green / grey colour painted units and white worktops ( not Corian but similar material) shaker style . Had it in my last house liked it so much I'm putting it in my new kitchen too . No wall cupboards this time just one wall as a bank of units . I saw some really modern glossy kitchens that I loved but I was worried they would date and there's no way I'm replacing another kitchen in a hurry Grin

rosealltheway · 27/07/2018 12:22

Warm cream/ivory for shaker style DeVol units, with brass handles and marble worktops, nothing more creamy/delicious than this combo IMO.

I think the dark blue/green trend for kitchens everywhere right now will look very overpowering/gloomy and out dated in 5+ years time.
