What do you love about where you live? (Either house or location)

We see a lot of problems come up here, but I thought it might also be nice to see why people love where they live. This can be either about your location, or your specific house.

Even if it's not a dream house/location, is there something that you really love? It could be your whole town or one bookcase, doesn't matter.

We have just moved house, although there are some negatives when comparing to the old there are also lots of positives, a downstairs bathroom, a huge garden which is a big thing for us as we are outside a lot and we have a log burner in our new living room which I can't wait to use come winter!

Where we live - we are in Surrey, I absolutely love living here, so many lovely days out locally, 20 min train into Waterloo, an hour to lots of lovely beaches so near enough to do a day or weekend trip, an hour to Calais to go over to France for a weekend, lots of greenery and lots of lovely shopping towns and places to eat. I feel very spoilt but we definitely pay a premium in rent for this! However I could never move away for cheaper housing.

We’re moving in 8 weeks, but I do love my current area. I’m looking forward to moving 1.5 hours drive away, but I will miss a lot of things. Our proximity to beaches, lovely towns, amazing shopping. Great school.

Bananamilkshake2 · 02/07/2018 10:10

I love my big garden, all the space we have and all of the annual festivals in the little town where we live ❤

EssentialHummus · 02/07/2018 10:16

I live in zone 2 of London but honestly I feel like we're in a lovely village sometimes. I know all the neighbours, despite being a relative newcomer. Most people are friendly, welcoming and helpful - my neighbour and I share a wonderful work in progress garden and all tools. We had a street party last week. There is an annual arts festival that is astonishing in its scale, all delivered by volunteers. A local bloke will deliver warm sourdough, croissants and cheese to your door. The local primary has the year 6s putting on an opera, FFS, as a change from their usual orchestral performances. There is free parking on-street, though it's not abundant in supply. There's a free, good playclub in a lovely park 200m from my door. There are busses at the bottom of my road that are frequent and on useful routes.

I suppose our compromise is ending up with a flat instead of a house, but on balance it was the right choice for us.

zebrapig · 02/07/2018 10:38

Banana do you live in Cumbria by any chance?

I love my house but it's too small so we're moving in a few weeks to somewhere bigger, I can't wait! We're staying in our village though as we love it. We can walk to everything and there's loads of places to eat or go for a coffee or a drink.

I love my house because we've worked so hard on it to make it the perfect home for us. When we moved in 5 years ago it was a tiny bungalow with a rotten old conservatory on the back. Since then we've added two huge extensions, ripped out and redone the garden which was a concrete jungle before, completely redecorated and renovated the whole house and changed the layout. It's now got a huge kitchen/diner, huge lounge, utility room, 2 bathrooms, 3 double bedrooms and lots of storage. We kept our bedroom downstairs and converted the loft for the kids so if we ever have issues with mobility we don't have to move or adapt much.

The village we live in is great. Large village green with lots of shops and cafes/pubs/restaurants. It's a minute around the corner from us. Buses run from there into the nearest town and the station is less than a mile away (20 mins to London on train). GP surgery and dentist are a 30 second walk away. Kids secondary school is less than a mile walk down the road.

It's not all perfect but I think we ended up in a good situation :)

We moved here last year and whilst the house itself needed decorating throughout and a flipping good scrub I fell in love with the landing windows. Three storeys so where a bedroom would be at the end of the landing, there's a window that's west facing and at the top of the first flight of stairs there's a south facing window. Then there's the velux windows in the roof bedroom that let this lovely dappled light down the second flight of stairs.I just walked in, saw the huge amount of light flooding the landing and told my husband this was the one. I'm all about the light me Grin

My house could be bigger but I like it, I like that it's detached, has a garage for storage, decent neighbours and it's a quiet, safe area. Kids are settled in their schools.
However I hate our town and would love to move. I'd love to be near a coast but job wise it's difficult. I can't see me staying here long term. We do have very good amenities here though and that would be hard to give up.

LegoBitcho · 02/07/2018 11:27

We are in SW London and so well connected. Every time I tried to look at other areas to buy I came back here as it's affordable and I could get anywhere easily (travelled a bit for work to different offices, airports)

I'll miss PT in London, it's amazing.

I'm also going to miss how cheap our mortgage is which is not something you hear said about London often 🤔

Discotits · 02/07/2018 11:29

Zone 3 London.
I’ve got four bedrooms so that’s handy.
Ten minutes from the tube and overground.
Most people get their first choice of school.
It’s quite ‘trendy’, so if you like coffee shops and micro breweries, great.
I don’t love it though.

MyBreadIsEggy · 02/07/2018 11:32

Our last military move, we expected a normal sized, 3 bed semi.....we pulled up to a huge 3 bed detached with an enormous garden - genuinely thought we had been wrongly allocated as my husband was a lowly lance corporal at the time! But no, definitely ours Grin And to top off the massive garden, my best friends house backs onto mine with just a bit of chicken wire separating us.
I’ll be sad when the next inevitable move comes along Sad

GfordMum101 · 02/07/2018 11:39

Village near Guildford.... downsides, traffic, really busy everywhere all the time, some very obnoxious people, no shops or pubs in village, everything very expensive. Upsides, local station walking distance and 40 mins to London, 40 mins to beach by car, easy reach to New Forest, airports and Dover. Lots of choice of towns to shop. Views of Downs from my upstairs windows, walk out of my gate and into the countryside. Been here all my life as never found anywhere as convenient for everything.

BigusBumus · 02/07/2018 11:41

I love the view. Could stare at it all day.

missyB1 · 02/07/2018 11:51

Love living in our Gloucestershire town. Lots of nice facilities and good schools, there's quite a lively vibe and loads going on. We have the Cotswolds on our doorstep as well.

Our house is nothing special and tbh isn't really my style. BUT we live on a very safe estate where all the kids can play out together and that's why we bought the house.

MisguidedAngel · 02/07/2018 11:51

We live in rural France, overlooking a beautiful river and woodland, with our boat moored in front of the house. Lovely countryside, sea 20 minutes away on nearly empty roads, free parking.
Downsides - garden is too big, takes a lot of time and there are things I miss about UK (but not enough to move back)

NameChanger22 · 02/07/2018 11:58

I love that we live right next to a park and a river, but only 10 minutes walk into the city. I live in a great city where there are lots of really good shops, restaurants, museums and cultural things to do. We are never bored.

Inside my house is a bit too small, but it is all decorated beautifully and we have lots and lots of storage space. I've lived there a long time and everything is done to my taste. I especially love our kitchen. I also love how old our house is, so it comes with some nice old features.

Emma198 · 02/07/2018 12:14

@zebrapig yes I do. How amazing you guessed that with so little to go on!

Emma198 · 02/07/2018 12:14

Name change fail 🙄🙄

Secretsquirrel101 · 02/07/2018 12:16

Honestly pretty much everything about it. I'm on the north Devon coast, which is completely stunningly beautiful and I have a lovely little cottage with sea views. I can sit in bed and watch the sun set over the sea, and listen to the waves, were that close. It's amazing. Plus we have absolutely no near neighbours or any busy roads nearby so it's heaven for my little dogs.

Haberpop · 02/07/2018 12:25

Suffolk/Norfolk border.

The garden is big and we have trees large enough to take a hammock, I love days off, in the hammock, browsing the 'net. The house is old, it faces east/west so few of the rooms get direct sunlight so it is cool in this heat. We have an open fire which is great in the chilly months. We have four neighbours and are on chatting terms with all of them. Our views are over fields and woods.

MyBreadIsEggy · 02/07/2018 12:26

Haberpop let me come live with you Grin

springmachine · 02/07/2018 12:33

Ive moved to a new area for work and although the town itself isn't a place I'd have as my first choice I love the house and I love the friends I've made being here.
It's access to wonderful countryside and easy links with beautiful cities and towns is also beneficial.

The house was affordable thanks to being unloved for many years so it's been nice putting some love back into it and I'm now sitting in the garden enjoying the plants and the sunshine whilst toddler naps.

Kingkiller · 02/07/2018 12:38

I love where I live. I have views over the estuary to the Lake District fells from my window. It's a 5 minute walk to the shore or the lovely woods. My village is pretty and friendly with a fantastic little primary school, a community-run shop and a park for the dc. My house needs a bit of work decor-wise, but it's light and airy and has a kind of split-level open-plan layout, which I really like.

SecretSquirrel - that sounds amazing! North Devon was the other location we were looking at as well as Cumbria when we relocated.

newmumwithquestions · 02/07/2018 13:05

Our garden. We have trees! Lots! Sometimes I catch a glimpse of it through a window and sigh happily

Secondclass · 02/07/2018 13:18

I have grown to love the location of our house. I was worried about moving here because the house is small and not close to any shops. Been here three years now and love it. Lots of green space around and also very near a lovely large park. I have got used to walking a bit further than I was used to for public transport and shops. Also, love my sunny back garden.
