What do you love about where you live? (Either house or location)

We see a lot of problems come up here, but I thought it might also be nice to see why people love where they live. This can be either about your location, or your specific house.

Even if it's not a dream house/location, is there something that you really love? It could be your whole town or one bookcase, doesn't matter.

I live in a very very deprived area of the north west. Used to live by the sea in a fairly affluent neighbourhood (when I still lived at home)

Getting used to the difference in surroundings took some getting used to but having lived here a few years now I actually prefer it because our neighbours (not just the immediate ones, the whole road and in fact a lot of the surrounding area) are really lovely.

They will always help you out if you're in a bind, from something as simple to giving you a cup of coffee if you've ran out to sharing gardening equipment and looking after each other's kids.

It's a real community, and people genuinely care about each other. For example, an elderly man who lived a few doors down from us died a few months ago. He didn't have a penny to his name but was always a friendly face and would even play games with the kids in the street if he felt up to it.

There was a whip around the road and he got a lovely send off, the one he deserved and the church was heaving.

That would never have happened in my old more wealthy neighbourhood. People just didn't speak to their neighbours. They weren't unfriendly but we didn't even know each others names.

Tldr : I love how friendly and caring my neighbourhood is, it has a real sense of community despite being dirt poor and run down.

It is very quiet, the view from all our front windows are delightful. We are very private, not overlooked at all and there is plenty of room to park several cars on our drive, close to town but not too close , close to the local hospital, we can see paragliders ,the air ambulance coming in and it is very beautiful, it isn't our dream home but imho every house you buy has something wrong that you have to compromise on.

I'm on the outskirts of a big city, kind of on the border between 2. However I can see fields out of every window, most days I can sit in my garden and listen to the birds (as long as the chav family over the gardens aren't shouting at each other) and I'm surrounded by farms so can pop over the road with a couple of carrots for the horses or go for a 10 minute walk down the lane to see calves and lambs.

My house is small but is bright and airy and has fantastic built in storage. It's a couple of minutes walk to a park which runs almost the entire length of the town.

It's a small market town with everything you need day to day, but is only 15 minutes drive to a much bigger town with loads of facilities.

I love my house and where I live but we'll be moving away from the area in a couple of years as we need more space and can't afford it here as prices are so high.

What a lovely idea OP!

I love three things. The house is built of honey coloured stone which i just love to look at. It's warm and inviting and feels durable. The second thing I love is the light - like other posters - it's wonderful and so light everywhere. The third thing I love is the reservoir across the road. I walk around it most days and it's a glorious walk for Ddog and for me too.

I could add the neighbours - they're great too but obviously that's just the luck of the draw.

There is only 5 houses in our close.
The park is around the corner.
The local school is amazing and has been noted so in the Sunday Times.
It’s close to the M-way with links to London.
Brilliant station to Kings Cross St Pancras.
Airport on my doorstep
Can walk a short distance to the countryside

Edge of town & edge of country so great access to both.
Alas, a big road is being built in field in front of us, about 100 yards away, so soon to lose our peaceful country lane. :(

RandomMess · 03/07/2018 21:25

View and we're on the edge of a hill so it can't be built on!

catenthusiast · 03/07/2018 21:31

DH and I only have a little house but it's our first and we've been able to spend lots of time making it into what we want - we're still working on it but I love that it's all up to us and we get to decide how it ends up!

We live 10 minutes in one direction from my parents and 10 minutes in the other from my PIL, we're near the countryside and have lovely jobs that we can both leave at work, for the most part.

It's not the perfect location or the perfect house but it's very much a home for us and that makes me very happy Smile

Our town has great community spirit, quite a lot of events throughout the year. It's not huge but has a lot of good facilities nearby. We're in an absolutely stunning part of the country and driving with work across the county always makes me smile. Great countryside for activities and camping.

Our house is in a pretty street and generally lovely neighbours. We're now extending so that the house will work well for us for the next 15-20 years as we don't want to leave Smile

I love that I can see mountains while I'm doing the washing up; that we have a stream and trees and a wildflower meadow. Tiny cottage: great location.

Kismett · 03/07/2018 23:17

I had intended to reply to everyone in this thread but they’ve been coming too fast! It’s interesting to see what people value in a home. It seems like community is a large part of that.

I live in a village with a lot of history, beautiful old buildings, a very active community and my school run is a lovely stroll where I get to see sheep, chickens and squirrels, pick blackberries with the children, chat with unhurried friendly dog walkers. But it also has all I need at my doorstep: school, dr surgery, dentist, a few small shops, post office and good bus and rail links . I was born a city girl but honestly I wouldn't go back now. It feels such a nice slow pace of life, so safe and clean. On Sundays you see families dressed up for church and older men in shiny classic cars. I have lived here 12 years and it all still turns my head!!! It's like we are 50 years behind....and I love it. I never ever thought I would cope with village life but I feel so incredibly lucky to be here, because I feel my children are much safer than where I came from. My house is tiny though, I could never afford a big house here. 😥
