What is with bathrooms with no storage?

I've just moved from a house with no bathroom storage, into a house with no bathroom storage. As has my friend who's just moved into a new build.

WTF is that about? Don't builders/ developers think we need somewhere to put stuff? Pedestal sinks are a waste of space. I sued to have a crappy freestanding cupboard with a cutout for the pedestal sink. It was shit.

I don't think I've ever seen a bathroom with built in storage, most people just use freestanding to fit the space / look don't they?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/06/2018 09:48

Couldn't agree more. Have stayed at so many places, inc. friends' houses, where there's nowhere to put your toiletries, let alone much else.
Other people's bathrooms are a major peeve for Dh - who is not remotely a moaner in general.
Our bathrooms are pretty ancient now but both have loads of built in storage and plenty of space for people's sponge bags/toiletries.

ImGlidingHere · 15/06/2018 09:51

Fine if there is actually any space to put freestanding storage - I barely have room for the dirty linen bin (and it's not huge, it's an old Lloyd Loom), let alone a free standing storage unit. We just have a small wall mounted cupboard with bafrely enough space for toiletries in current use, spares have to be stored in a whicker basket in our bedroom this does stop DH starting a new one of anything before the old one is finished though

Our (modern, rented) house has no built in storage at all, except from in the kitchen, which has cupboards on two of the four walls... absolutely no cupboards or shelves in the rest of the house. Modern houses are, I suspect, done with minimal furnishings, so people can install their own. However many landlords probably prefer to keep costs down, & don't bother. It's a pain. We've looked at other houses locally - they all seem to be the same.

ImGlidingHere · 15/06/2018 10:18

Should have said - we don't live in a new build but in mid 1960's house, so no space and/or storage is nit just an issue with new build property

I have a bathroom with no storage. I detest it. First time house purchase and very naive and didn’t notice it when I was buying it. Haven’t got enough time money or energy to replace bathroom. So stuff just sits there looking messy. Ahhhhh

I changed the bathroom in my current house to my own design, it's gorgeous (modest) and has tons of storage. It makes such a difference to have loads of space to put things away. I have steps up to the bath (deep soaking tub) that have drawers in the steps. The sink counter is custom made and has two built-in laundry baskets and a cabinet under the sink. There is a corner shelf behind the door for holding clean towels. Possibly my favourite storage is a hidden door in the unit that hides the loo cistern, it's exactly the right depth and height to store loo rolls, there are three shelves and I can get 9 loo rolls onto each shelf (because such is my deep-seated fear of running out of loo roll).

However, all the custom cabinetry did cost a lot of money, which is why new builds don't bother to do it at all.

The best thing our vendors did was to fit built in storage in all our bathrooms. Each has a bit bathroom cabinet and a vanity unit/built in sink thing and one has cupboards in a built in toilet unit thing. I'm so pleased they did as it is so useful!

HOWEVER it wasn't until we moved in, to this lovely house with lots of bathroom storage, that we realised that not one of them has a toilet roll holder fitted anywhere. Bizarre!

Want2bSupermum · 15/06/2018 12:19

Living in America no bathroom has good storage. I got IKEA kitchen cabinets and put them up in the bathroom. I added another shelf and use baskets to organize all my small stuff. It's worked really well.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/06/2018 13:03

I don't have wall-mounted toilet roll holders user, I much prefer the free standing ones.

JohnnyKarate · 15/06/2018 14:32

I'm with you OP. When we first moved in there was only one bathroom cabinet in our ensuite, which was so high on the wall even my 6ft DP could only just see his face in it. Our new bathrooms have lots of storage which has made them look so much tidier! I don't know how we managed before.

@user1484830599 we don't have toilet roll holders attached to the wall. DP refuses to 'ruin' the tiles. We have free standing ones.

CloudIllusions · 15/06/2018 14:34

I'd rather have freestanding storage so I can get the configuration I want.
I have a tallboy chest of drawers in my bathroom and it is perfect.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 15/06/2018 14:54

We were silly excited to find this bathroom when viewing houses....it has other great features too (which is why we are currently waiting to exchange) however despite all this storage it's doesn't have a loo roll holderHmm

Fingers crossed we get the contracts exchanged this coming week and I can go from no storage in current house to loads Grin

What is with bathrooms with no storage?
Titsywoo · 15/06/2018 15:02

When we were designing our new bathroom we struggled to find decent storage for a good price. We've ended up building our own sink vanity using kitchen units with a white quartz work top and an undermount ceramic sink. Looks great and there's loads of room for all our stuff.

TeamEponine · 15/06/2018 15:06

We had no storage and no floor space, so...

I got an extra tall and extra deep kitchen wall unit put in our bathroom. It has a glossy white handle-less door, so looks good in a bathroom. Lots of storage, and I've shifted the shelves around so I have the height for cleaning bottles to go up high. Works well, if you have some wall space.

Want2bSupermum · 15/06/2018 15:26

For toilet roll storage don't you use the thing that hooks onto the side of the toilet?

This is what we have. It's great.

happymummy12345 · 15/06/2018 15:26

Most don't. We have a large glass shelving unit free standing, and glass shelves on the wall and one above the sink.

happymummy12345 · 15/06/2018 15:26

I agree it would be better if they did though

MissCherryCakeyBun · 15/06/2018 15:38

Loo roll
Holders
Like the one linked only work if you have a visible cistern ours is built in it's Mrs the free standing ones that hold the one that's in use that I will require. Any links to some gratefully received as all the ones I've seen so far are far to ornate and look more at home in a very Naice House not ours lol....also easy to clean would be great Blush

I'm having a new bathroom which is still at the design stage. The first plan, complete with glossy 360 degree photos showed the sink (with storage underneath) set slightly away from the wall that is at right angles to the wall it's on. I measured and the gap is wide enough for a toilet roll but just too narrow to fit a slim line storage unit into. It would be a total waste of space. The designer could have set the sink into a bigger unit that ran all the way to the wall or moved the sink a couple of inches to make the space useable but they did neither. Storage and best use of the space didn't seem to feature as a priority for them.

The sink is moving - it may be less visually appealing but I'll be able to fit in a unit for cleaning materials and toilet rolls.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/06/2018 16:02

Next usually have a few different designs of free-standing loo roll holders MissCherry.

Wilson2 · 15/06/2018 16:43

Argh I totally agree! No storage in bathrooms is such a problem! I buy the cheap shower caddies (is that what they're called?) that use suction to attach to the walls so that you can store things in them. Seriously SUPER helpful!!

ginghamstarfish · 15/06/2018 16:53

They don't do it on newbuilds because it would cost extra money =less profit. ALso built in storage would make rooms look smaller = less attractive.
