New house full of spiders HELP

IndieTara · 07/06/2018 21:53

Recently moved house and the new house is full of spiders.
I'm scared to death of spiders and I'm finding them everywhere. Everywhere.

I'm being brave and vacuuming them up as I go. ( don't hate me for vaccing them there are too many to catch under a glass and put outside plus I don't think I could do that anyway )

They're in cupboards, behind lights and tonight I found a big one in a saucepan!

I cant get into bed without checking and I'm sure there must be many more than the ones I've seen.

How can I stop them coming in and/or get rid of them?

I need help.

Indorex definitely works - it’s meant for fleas and ticks but seems to deter all insects and arachnids IME :)

IndieTara · 07/06/2018 23:51

@NoSquirrels yes it was empty 6 or 7 weeks before we moved in

Spider x works for me

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 07/06/2018 23:54

Do you think you've got a nest?

NoSquirrels · 07/06/2018 23:54

I reckon it won’t last then - don’t worry too much. As soon as they realise you’re around and in kill mode they’ll piss off elsewhere.

Sinkingswimmer · 07/06/2018 23:57

Aldi have a spider vac thing on offer just now.
I grew up in a spider filled house like yours, it was terrifying! I'm sure that's why I have a phobia of them. They would appear everywhere, we had to do the towel shaking thing too. My parents never did find a fool proof way of reducing their numbers, but the dog and cats helped.
So my advice would be to work on your phobia so you can put them outside, and get carnivorous pets!

WhatsGoingOnEh · 07/06/2018 23:58

DethLac is absolutely brilliant. Spray it everywhere - it's invisible, safe for kids and pets, but spiders can't walk across it without shrivelling up.

I'm sorry you're going through this! What a nightmare!

But reading this has made me feel a lot better about our not being able to buy a house I loved. It has been empty now for two years so it's probably ALIVE with the eight-legged bastards.

Get 5 cans of DethLac and go nuts with it. Go away for the weekend. Come home to leave and sanity.

IndieTara · 08/06/2018 00:08

A nest???? I never even thought of that

Still liking the weekend Dethlac idea too.

Would smoke bombs work?

Loving carnivorous pets. Altho I don't really want pets.

Just a heads up (not sure if it has been mentioned already) spiders live hoovers, it doesn't kill them and they love the warm environment of a hoover and can lay eggs in there/crawl back out 😱

If you empty it as soon as you've hoovered you should be ok though!

There is only one thing that works other than burning the damned house to the ground.
My grandmas house was spider central so we got the pest control in and they fumigated the place to get rid of the tons of nests and spider hideouts.
If you don't do this the problem will only get worse.

IndieTara · 08/06/2018 07:36

@madcat I did wonder if that was a possibility thanks

GladAllOver · 08/06/2018 08:44

I'm so sorry for you OP.
You will go through life treating the effects of your phobia, instead of getting rid of the problem itself - as many, many people have done.
And in addition, by your reaction to spiders you will be teaching your children to have the same phobia as well.
Please, please get some treatment.

Branleuse · 08/06/2018 09:00

You need to work on your phobia. We do not have any dangerous spiders in the UK. Once the house is cleaned and lived in, they will pretty much all go

IndieTara · 08/06/2018 13:53

Hi @GladAllOver and @Branleuse I know you're probably right but just so you know I don't freak out at spiders in front of DD9 generally and I don't mention them to her unless she says it first.

She will actually pick a spider up and get rid of it from time to time so I think she's going to be ok on the phobia front Smile

Make sure to smack the spider with the vacuum if at all possible as I was told that sucking them up doesn’t always kill them 😩

Check to see if you have any ventilation points in the walls (a little plastic/metal grill usually low down in a corner) and pop a sheet of acetate over it. That’s what my mum used to do.

Keep doors and windows closed too if you can x

Thanks all some good advice

When I moved into my husband’s place I was horrified by all the spiders. I don’t care if they aren’t poisonous, I couldn’t stand finding them everywhere. Some of them were so big he couldn’t get them under a glass and had to get a bowl instead!

I hated going about my day and then randomly finding them everywhere. Taking a shower? Spider waiting to shower with you. Doing laundry? Spider has been living in the hamper. Time for bed? Surprise! Spider already occupying your pillow.

I implemented a strict closed window policy (we had to for other reasons anyway) and my husband or I ejected every single spider we found. This went on for a long time, but by the next year, we had very few spiders.

Don’t listen to the people telling you to get a cat. Well, do get a cat, because they are lovely. But don’t expect them to do a thing about the spiders!

IdblowJonSnow · 09/06/2018 11:28

Pest control definitely. Ignore all the crazy people telling you to get your phobia sorted (fellow arachnophobe here!!) You can't live like that op, it's no way to live or enjoy your new house! CakeFlowers

Threepe · 09/06/2018 11:31

Conkers have always worked for me they realise an odour that apparently spiders don't like, I usually pick them when they fall from the trees didn't think of it this year , I'm terrified of them so I think I'll try the peppermint spray

GladAllOver · 09/06/2018 14:10

Ignore all the crazy people telling you to get your phobia sorted (fellow arachnophobe here!!)

There's nothing crazy about curing a phobia, as people who have successfully done so will readily confirm.
You seem to be proud of your phobia, well if you choose to live the rest of your life with a curable handicap that is your problem.

It is wrong to kill beneficial creatures like spiders, which get rid of flies, mosquitoes and other pests that spread disease.

If the OP was to put the spiders outside, and clear away the webs as part of a normal deep clean of the new house, she will not be troubled by more than a few new entrants.

Branleuse · 09/06/2018 14:14

Nobody whips people with dog phobias into killing dogs even though youre much more likely to be actually hurt by one than a tiny spider.
Killing the odd small creature is unavoidable but you dont have to kill everything youre afraid of.
Phobias can be worked with and improvements made

WheelyCote · 09/06/2018 14:19

Spider traps - one upstairs and downstairs and one one for each far out room.

Get rid of your boxes ASAP.

Don't leave anything lying around the floor

Hoover everyday

Flamethrower as a last resort

WheelyCote · 09/06/2018 14:20

Don't bother with those plug in insect repellant things...waste of money.

My last house was a spider magnet, particularly the cellar where the washer and dryer was

Make sure your chakras are aligned as this could be attracting unwanted souls into your home
