Would this wallpaper suit a 9/10yo boy?

Ds has one wall of wallpaper in his room, he's had it since a baby. He's almost 5 now and it's looking quite shabby.

Would this treasure map wallpaper suit him for another 5 years, so until he's around 10? I worry it will be far too twee for that age child Confused. In general I'd say he's slightly above average maturity so far, in terms of his interests.

Mine had bob the builder till he was 10. Then he asked to change his room. Why not wait and let him take the lead?

mando12345 · 18/05/2018 08:51

I think it looks lovely!
To be honest I would leave it for a few more years until he takes an interest in his decor, then include him in the decorating decisions.

Singlenotsingle · 18/05/2018 08:56

Take him round the decorating shops and choose together. Alternatively, little boys like bright colours - and Batman, superheroes, ninja turtles. If you paint 3 walls and just paper one, it's easy to re-do when he gets fed up with it

keepingbees · 18/05/2018 09:26

I like it and think it's suitable. I would be inclined to let him choose for himself though.

With my kids I never used wallpaper due to changing tastes and interests. I always just painted and then accessorised with themed curtains/bed covers/pictures etc which could easily be changed.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 18/05/2018 09:32

Thank you all.

I am Grin that you're all saying let him choose. The control freak in me wants to run a mile. But you're right. I think he'll like it though, he does enjoy a pirate/map.

I think it’s lovely - reminds me of Swallows and Amazons.

OrchidInTheSun · 18/05/2018 09:36

I like it but my 10 year old would think it's horribly babyish

MismatchedPJs · 18/05/2018 09:40

They grow up a lot at 9. I think a lot of them will be past the pirate phase if I'm honest. Doesn't mean they will necessarily tell you - mine didn't say he was over Ninjago at 8 but the look on his face when I offered him new bedding said it all. I don't think it would have occurred to him that his bedding or wallpaper could be changed if he only asked.

You could put it up but be prepared to change it or paint over it sooner if he likes.

LARLARLAND · 18/05/2018 09:41

I like it.

TheAntiBoop · 18/05/2018 09:41

My ds is 11 and we are just about to redecorate - he is currently mortified by his wallpaper which is similar to what you are suggesting!

So I think it would be fine for your ds. However, I would let him choose from a selection you like.

LARLARLAND · 18/05/2018 09:42

I really like brick effect wallpaper in (older) DCs rooms. It looks really cool.

Candyflip · 18/05/2018 09:43

It is the most boring room I have seen in a while, but I don’t think it is unsuitable for a 9/10 year old. Yaaaaaaawwwwwwn.

VivaKondo · 18/05/2018 09:44

Well I wouod let my 15yo choose his wallpaper. I asked my 10yo to choose between two or three wall paper.
At 5yo, I did the same tha you, choose and thought ahead for something that would work in 5 years time (which meant we choose something even more neutral than you!)

From the experience with my two ds, this wallpaper would have been great when they were that age.

beachysandy81 · 18/05/2018 09:45

I like it and take advantage of him being 5 to put up what you like. I can't even get wall paper on my sons' rooms now they are 11 and 13. It all has to be plain and boring!

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 18/05/2018 09:45

Ok thank you. The paper comes in different colour ways and I chose the black/beige because I think it would be less babyish than the more colourful ones. But I did worry I was cutting it fine and I'd really rather not replace sooner than 5 years.

I've got a fair few samples so I'll show ds this morn.

One other question - I think this one has longevity in terms of ds growing up, but is the triangle pattern a bit too of the moment?

Ah, this is not the current room! Yes, that wallpaper is fine. Just don’t do that to the duvet and let the kid add his own style 😂

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 18/05/2018 09:46

So you're not keen candy Grin

His walls are a soft blue at the moment and we have no plans to redecorate them, so that brings a bit of colour in...

Candyflip · 18/05/2018 09:47

No the paper is cool! 😂

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 18/05/2018 09:48

Thank god it wasn't his actual room, I'd be sobbing in a corner right now Grin

😂😂 stop it! I’m not that mean 😫

pinkdelight · 18/05/2018 09:57

The ship paper is lovely but my 10yo wouldn't be into it at all. I think it'll be okay up to age 8 or so then something plain/coloured is probably the way to go. Mine covers it all up with posters from gaming mags anyhow.

The triangle one is a nice pattern but looks a bit like wrapping paper more than something for a wall.

3boys3dogshelp · 18/05/2018 09:59

I think it’s quite an ask to find something that will last from 5 to 10. They grow up such a lot in that time.
The wallpaper you’ve picked is lovely for 5 but my 8 and 9 year olds have been out of pirates for quite a while now. I would class them as quite young for their age really. It’s all about football, music and computer games now.
I would use it but be prepared that it might not last as long as you hope.

PiggeryPorcombe · 18/05/2018 10:05

I like it but ds (11) would think it very babyish. It certainly wouldn’t pass muster once he’s at secondary Shock

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 18/05/2018 10:12

Thank you everyone. I think I might need to go back to the drawing board!

sausagedogsmakechipolatas · 18/05/2018 10:19

My 6yo would love the gaming room but my 10yo would think it was too young for him (although that might just be a matter of taste because said 10yo would much prefer maps or geology over that sort of thing.)
