Bespoke kitchen companies (eg Sola, Roundhouse) - recommendations/to avoid?

We are planning a kitchen extension and new kitchen. Probably looking for a company that can do bespoke and probably some sort of Shaker ish style (in frame painted anyway).

If you've had a bespoke or fairly high end shaker kitchen in the past few years, please tell me who you used and would you recommend them?

Ours isn’t shaker but I’m sure they would do. We used siematics, Stuart Frazer in Manchester and could not recommend them enough. They really did create for me the most beautiful kitchen I’ve ever seen and surprisingly it is nothing at all like what I set off to buy. If I ever move house I will use them again and hope for the exact same kitchen all.over.again. For the record we are nowhere near Manchester but didstance didn’t prove to be a problem at all and our kitchen was shipped to us.

Thanks! How did you find the design process if they weren't near you - was it all done over email?

Would love to see a picture and how much did it cost?

We are currently in process of planning a new kitchen and dont know where to start. We are in London.

Jaxhog · 14/05/2018 15:36

Avoid any that don't publish a price list. Otherwise, what you pay will entirely depend on where you live and how good your negotiating skills are.

RailReplacementBusService · 14/05/2018 15:43

It has been a good few years since we did ours but do check whether these places are actually proper bespoke. From memory I think roundhouse weren’t. And by proper bespoke I mean they can design you whatever you want in whatever size rather than them having a list of parts they put together.

We used simonskitchens.com and are very happy with it

minipie · 14/05/2018 17:07

Thanks - yes I have already come across a few that call themselves bespoke but aren't quite.

Price list - none of the bespoke ones have a price list, I think? But all will give a quote based on an initial design. You're right there seems to be some negotiation involved though, not my strong point Sad

We are in London too

Will check out those mentioned so far

We had a truly bespoke kitchen made by Cheverell Wood in Wiltshire. Getting out of London/Surrey you find much cheaper prices and they were happy to supply to us without us being near Wiltshire. Loved them. They build everything themselves and we bought everything from them (appliances, worktops etc). We had 4-5 quotes but these were the transparent with what we were getting as some co's quoted for cabinets only but you had to supply your own appliances, some were charging stupid prices for granite etc. Ours is shaker style painted Farrow and Ball French Grey.

minipie · 14/05/2018 17:30

Thanks, will add to the list!

How does the design process work if the company is not local to you? I can't quite imagine it, I find it easy to draw what I have in mind but not so easy to describe over the phone or by email...

We designed it ourselves with an architect and provided the drawings to the kitchen company. I know that doesn’t help you. We had many designs done by kitchen companies but in the end only the architect could plan it due to drainage (heights etc) and where appliances needed to be situated. It was a new extension rather than a replacement kitchen.

Pootlebug · 15/05/2018 00:54

We used Higham www.higham.co.uk 5 years ago and people still comment on how good the kitchen looks. They were great to work with too...friendly, everything was done when they said it would be etc. We visited their Hampshire workshop and loved how into their work everyone was as well as the quality of it all.

Changingeveryth · 15/05/2018 09:43

We are going to use Naked Kitchens. You would need to find a fitter but they might be able to suggest someone. If you are south of London I can recommend someone! We looked at Tom Howley and felt so uncomfortable with the sales process. Liked the kitchen, could have afforded it but I hated the lack of transparency around pricing.

Sorry didn’t get chance to upload last night

We are a long way from the company we bought from but the process was quite easy. The designer was called David and he was excellent and understanding points I was trying to get across, actually better than many of the conversations I’ve had face to face with builders over the last 18months and other kitchen companies on my doorstep! And he really wasn’t frightened to point out when he had thought of a better way than me! (And any other company that looked at the job) Lots and lots and lots of phone conversations and emails. I sent them plans and photos of the room etc. I visited them once but only as I was nearby by chance otherwise it wasn’t necessary. They came to see me (a flight was required) for final measure just before the kitchen was ordered and brought with them samples for me to again double check. The kitchen was fit in December, days before Christmas and the fitters were lovely. We paid for and arranged their accommodation near us and also booked and paid for their transport. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. They also put a pantry in and a utility and a bar area too.

TheFarAwaySeas · 15/05/2018 12:29

I came on the thread hoping I wouldn't read bad reviews of the company we picked for our kitchen. It wasn't bespoke bespoke it was fitting multiple parts together but we negotiated a good discount which worked in their favour. We have a very strange set up in our kitchen but Kuchenhaus's designer made it work. We are in London too.

Changingeveryth · 15/05/2018 12:34

ooo - I love the layout! Can I ask how big the mini islands with the hob and sink are?

Getsomesleep · 15/05/2018 13:07

Islands are 250 x 120cm ish and joined together by a 300cm bar xx

minipie · 15/05/2018 14:26

Thank you all! More reviews welcome! I will look at Naked Kitchens

The only one mentioned I know of is Higham. I visited them and they are very nice and clearly very good quality - but all a bit too traditional for me and they weren't very keen on redesigning anything to suit a more modern style. Basically they explained they have so much demand they don't have time (or need) to be spending ages redesigning stuff. Fair enough and full marks for honesty but I want more flexibility.

Anyone know anything about Holloways of Ludlow, Blakes or Sola?

Don’t know if still going but there used to be a magazine called beautiful kitchens. We actually bought a year or so’s back issues as we found it helpful to flick through and identify what we liked and what we didn’t.

opinionatedfreak · 15/05/2018 18:22

Where are you? I used halcyon they install primarily German/Austrian kitchens but doors come in all styles. They can order custom units for a bespoke look - mine is a mix of standard and bespoke sizes. I remain delighted with it 6minths post installation - they have branches in town (signore street) and Buckinghamshire.

opinionatedfreak · 15/05/2018 18:22

Bloody autocorrect.

Wigmore street.

ElizabethBennetismybestfriend · 15/05/2018 18:24

We used Naked Kitchens and they were excellent

Whatthefoxgoingon · 15/05/2018 18:42

Our kitchen is truly bespoke (it’s very large, I couldn’t afford a fancy designer at the time so I had to design it with the architect myself) but friends have had lovely kitchens from Tom Howley, Smallbone, Roundhouse, Plain English etc. You’d be looking at £30k starting prices so it all depends on budget. If you have a large kitchen, I’d not be surprised by £100k plus once you add in the appliances, stone worktops etc.

For a more modern look, check out siematic and poggenpohl. The one I was warned off was Alno, but this was years ago, they may have improved.

minipie · 15/05/2018 20:19

Thanks. We are in London.

I don't want to spend £100k. £50k could be justified, or maybe a little more if we fall in love with high end finishes or appliances. £30k doesn't get me proper bespoke (or at least, not bespoke incl appliances and worktops) as far as I can tell? Do let me know if it can!

Whatthefox so did you use a joiner? I am increasingly thinking I could go down that route having shamelessly nicked the kitchen companies' advice and ideas. And if so, did you notice any difference in the end product vs your friends' £££ kitchens?

OP posts:
minipie · 15/05/2018 20:25

German doesn't really work for me as they are all very modern, I'm after more of a cabinetry look (not necessarily all shaker but in that vein)

Naked Kitchens look fab but are based in Norfolk... bit of a PITA from us (SW London). those who used Naked Kitchens, did you go to the showroom before committing to them? In fact same question for anyone who used someone based a long way away?

OP posts:
Whatthefoxgoingon · 15/05/2018 20:42

Hi minipie

Yes we used a joiner for all the cabinetry. Basically my architect and I sat down before our renovation and planned the layout, I bought all the appliances separately and sourced the stone myself. I had an electrician and plumber already on hand for the renovation. I had farrow and ball paint colours duped and sprayed like you’d spray a car. Much more durable than actual F&B paint. This was a more long winded way to go about it, but worked out well. My kitchen is fairly simple with a 5m island with drawers with hob and sink and back wall with all the appliances, aga, cupboards and larder. There were no complicated corners to work around and no space issues.

I’d say my kitchen is nicer than my friends Grin but that’s because it’s completely suited to our needs. But because we already had trusted workmen on site, it went smoothly. If you are also planning an extension, seriously look into this route. You need a good eye, enough spare time and a willing architect to make up the plans.

For a much smaller properties to sell on, I’ve successfully used Ikea, upgrading handles etc. It’s a complete pain in the arse to plan though. Also look into bristish standard cupboards if you’re willing to put some work into it, they are Plain English but you need to plan it yourself. Much cheaper though. It is more traditional in style.

Haggle hard for your appliances. I bought them all in one go and negotiated a 15% discount. Well my husband did anyway, he can sell snow to the Inuits.

It can be done circa £30k plus another £10-15k for appliances but really depends on your kitchen size and what stone you use. Do you know the size yet?

Just looked at Plain English website, now it says the kitchens start at £45k. Well that’s gone up rather a lot then Confused
