Help me decide: open-plan or seperate kitchen (with floor plan and layout pics)

Working on floor plan for extension, I cant decide whether to go for large open plan kitchen-diner or seperate kitchen and living-dining room. There would be a seperate reception room and study, so even in open plan it wont be just one room on ground floor.
Any suggestion to change the floor plan/kitchen layout would be great too.
I had posted earlier but thought of posting again with right question as i couldnt edit my previous question.

Open plan! The layout of the separate kitchen is awkward.

Backingvocals · 04/05/2018 10:03

Open plan - given that you have another reception room. I wouldn't look at a house with a separate kitchen any more. But I do also want a separate living room.

Westnorwood · 04/05/2018 11:07

I always prefer a separate kitchen but will be in the minority. I like shutting myself away to cook and my partner is the same. What software are you using to design those first images?

I like the open plan too but worried about kitchen mess and smell. Open plan would look great if everything is all tidy but afraid that won't be able to manage that in day to day life. I see a beautiful sink/tap and lovely island then immediately after that I see a plastic drainer rack full of plastic tiffin boxes next to sink, washing up liquid and all then papers and chargers and other mess on island!
seperate kitchen might help keep the living dining area looking nice in day to day life but then I won't be in it either!
If you have open plan kitchen diner do you find it is easy enough to keep looking nice?

Open plan for me, as long as there is one other separate reception room.

immediately after that I see a plastic drainer rack full of plastic tiffin boxes next to sink, washing up liquid and all then papers and chargers and other mess on island!

Buy a nice washing up liquid holder.

Be strict and don’t put any crap and papers on the island.

A good tip I’ve seen for minimising surface clutter is to have two dishwashers - then you never have dirty things looking untidy.

mum2015 · 04/05/2018 13:38

Yes two dishwasher would help. What to do with plastic tiffin boxes and bottles which don't dry in dishwasher?

The ugliest things on show are dish drainer and dishwashing stuff. I can put the liquid, wipes etc in drawer but the washing sponge and towel needs air to dry.
Also I can get very good extractor but worried about all the noise it will make.

I dislike big open plan spaces, especially if they include a kitchen, but give the 2 plans, I think you need open plan. The other arangement is awkward.

We have open plan. We have absolutely nothing out on worktop / island other than Nespresso machine. Clutter drives me mad! Nothing worse than worktops full of bits!

The washing up liquid etc lives in the cupboard below the sink. It has a shelf on it, have a little plate type thing for sponge. Have an adjacent utility room with hooks where cloths /tea towels get hung up.

Toaster / kettle if you have one in appliance 'garage' or in utility room. We have wall mounted magazine rack in there for all papers / post, plus noticeboard etc.

Washing plastics / boxes etc - just dry them and put them away once they're washed.

mum2015 · 04/05/2018 14:24

Nice tips for making kitchen clutterfree. It is giving me more optimism for open-plan.

Looking at floorplan, is there any way to have a nicer seperate kitchen?

You can have a charging cupboard. Get plugs put in and some shelves.

4yearsnosleep · 04/05/2018 14:30

I like the open plan

Re clutter of drying bits, you could get a double sink and put a drying rack in one side so that the drying bits aren't on view?

lalaloopyhead · 04/05/2018 14:33

Open plan! My sister converted 3 rooms into an open plan kitchen/dining room and at the planning stage I was a little dubious about the loss of separate rooms, however it has turned out amazingly and it a really lovely living space that I would be very happy with.

AppleAndBlackberry · 04/05/2018 14:38

I like open plan. I would block off one of the doors into the space and I would consider having the dining table at the garden end. We have an open plan kitchen diner with a small seating area (2-seat sofa) and it's not too messy. The dining table has some piles of children's craft stuff and protects today but that's it. We have a separate lounge which is fairly tidy too and a study which is really messy.

mum2015 · 04/05/2018 15:26

So many votes for open plan Smile. Please keep giving your tips on how to make it more organised and clutter free. I never lived in an open plan space so finding it hard to inagibe that in day to day life how to keep it looking nice.

Open plan
Have just done this ourselves and we love the new room.
Brilliant for entertaining.
And the room is big enough to store most stuff out of the way.

FireworksBaby · 04/05/2018 15:39

Open plan. When we had a separate kitchen it was always messy, because we could shut the door and forget it until the next meal. Now I sit looking at the kitchen, I always clear away before sitting down. I didn't think I would turn into a tidy, organised kitchen person before it happened!

AppleAndBlackberry · 04/05/2018 16:25

I have a Joseph Joseph sink caddy and draining rack and an IKEA magazine folder for letters from school etc. Our bins are hidden in a cupboard. I don't have a kettle, I have a hot water tap instead. It makes the worktops uncluttered.

scaryteacher · 04/05/2018 16:58

I moved from a house with open plan to one with a separate kitchen and dining room last year. I will never, ever, ever, live in an open plan house again. I like being able to shut the door on any mess,. I prefer that no one can see me cut myself, or hear me swearing when something goes wrong.

I had to try to be tidy all the time with open plan.

I like the current house, where I spend a lot of time in the dining room, reading, sewing etc. I liked the kitchen/breakfast room set up of the Edwardian house we had as well, which worked well for us.

cakeandteajustforme · 04/05/2018 17:13

I see a theme... I love our Joseph Joseph drying rack. It's super minimal.

Fooferella · 04/05/2018 18:34

Could you make it flexible? Folding doors and shutters could shut it away when you want but you could open the doors and engage with the rest of the room. Ive doored off the utility in my very bad drawing but that could remain open.

Hi
In your plan drawing for the open plan arrangement you actually have oodles of space in there and it looks like you are by quite sure what to do with it all....

I would do the open plan arrangement, but would keep the playroom as a separate room but with a double door opening through to the open plan living/kit/diner. I'd then have the living area next the the playroom, the dining table up at the top next to the garden and next to the kitchen so you can cook and chat to people sat at the table. In terms of hiding your draining stuff - get a double sink and use one of the sinks for your drainer. Smile

Our friends have an open plan kitchen/family room & a lounge. The lay out worked great when the kids were little & went to bed early but now when we they have dinner parties the kids are in the lounge & the guests are in the family room.
