Anyone had a carpet fitted recently?

If so can you tell me how much it cost?

I've had a quote from a flooring man recommended by our builder and it's ages since we've fitted carpet so I honestly don't know how much is reasonable. He's quoted £1750 for 2 carpets + underlay. The rooms are about 14 x 10 ft each. One of the rooms needs underlay removing that was glued to the floor.

What??? That is absolutely outrageous. I'd be expecting it to be a quarter of that!

joeytribbiani · 24/04/2018 20:02

What type of carpet are you having fitted? Man made or wool?
Is there any furniture in room that needs removing?

If I were you I'd ask for a breakdown of materials, labour costs etc...

Or get another quote done by a local carpet shop?

ShellsBells76 · 24/04/2018 20:06

Very expensive, get some more quotes. I only have carpet in my front room and that is 16ft x 12ft and had a mid range carpet fitted last year for £450.

Feelingchipper · 24/04/2018 20:08

Also make sure they're going to cut any doors to ensure they open and close easily. I would also ask if they're going to clean up afterwards - our carpet people left a tonne of carpet fluff on the carpets which spread throughout the house including the non-carpered areas

DragonsAndCakes · 24/04/2018 20:11

We just had a whole house done from scratch, so new gripper rods throughout. Medium option of underlay. This plus fitting was £15 a sqm. (Cost of carpet isn’t included in that.)

PickAChew · 24/04/2018 20:12

Agree about asking for a breakdown. How much are the carpet, underlay etc per square metre? How much of each will be supplied? Other sundries like grippers etc? If they won't give you that information, take your money elsewhere.

Had carpet fitted to two bedrooms, a few weeks ago. 11x12 and 8x12. Came to a total of £680 for materials (including mid range synthetic carpet and recycled crumb underlay) and £145 for fitting. We'd already cleared the rooms and patched and reinforced loose boards, repaired broken grippers etc.

Magstermay · 24/04/2018 20:21

We’re about to do 2 bedrooms for just under £600 but that’s low quality carpet (kids rooms). I would be looking for more quotes in your position - did you choose the carpet yourself? Definitely get a breakdown too.

DragonsAndCakes · 24/04/2018 20:29

Ah does your figure include carpet too? Have you looked online to see what the price of just the carpet is so you can work out what the fitting cost is?
Maybe you’ve just chosen a really expensive carpet?!

Loueytb3 · 24/04/2018 20:35

Yes it includes carpet. And in the SE so costs generally higher.

The carpet was 80% wool so I guess that's reasonable quality.

I'm in London and had some silly quotes, ended up using a small shop on our high street and was much cheaper. Agree with others full breakdown and if you can remove the old carpet that will save on cost too.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/04/2018 21:16

I’m in the south east. We’ve just had three rooms about that size plus a stairway and small landing for about £2.5k.

Soundsgood · 24/04/2018 21:22

I had 1 large lounge, stairs, hallway & 2 double bedrooms with 2 double wardrobes in each bedroom done.

Cormar carpet £1000. It is excellent quality.
I used a firm on an industrial estate, who get it cheap/trade.

You can see your footprints in it, it's so deep and soft. It's really good quality.

Underlay was Cloud 9, from Underlay4u. I got the thickest. Delivered in 48 hours. £100.

Carpet fitter £120

£1220.

Loueytb3 · 24/04/2018 21:28

The carpet is already gone. One of the rooms has underlay that has literally been glued onto the floor and the builders struggled to get it off (and then gave up) so that is not going to be easy to get up. I have asked him for a breakdown of the costs. He is also replacing the metal bars to the doors of the other rooms but I am pretty sure the costs of those are minimal. I had in my head about £500-600 per room so this is way over that.

Fairylea · 24/04/2018 21:32

We are in Norfolk so prices might be different but I’ve had rooms done with good quality carpet and underlay and old stuff removed for about £400 each. I think it depends on what carpet you choose really!

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 24/04/2018 21:49

That price is ridiculous! I live in a 2 bed flat with open plan kitchen / front room and I was quoted £1200 from Carpet Right for ECONOMICAL carpet which they'd have to cut and piece together! Rang an independent carpet fitter and got the whole flat done for £700! Just keep looking around Hun.

DragonsAndCakes · 24/04/2018 22:10

So by my calculations you’re looking at 40sqm

So that’s £43 a sqm which isn’t ridiculous. Take the £15 (or a bit more for London) off and you’re at £28 or a bit less per sqm for carpet.

Have I worked that out right?!

14x10 feet = 140sqf which google says is 13sqm. Times 3 is 39. I rounded up.

wowfudge · 24/04/2018 22:30

Without knowing what the carpet is and the cost of that psm, it's difficult to comment.

Loueytb3 · 24/04/2018 22:48

I've checked the room sizes and it comes to approx 30 sqm. So total cost is around £58 per sqm for carpet/underlay/fitting. DSIS has just texted me to say that she's just paid £38 per sqm (also SE) so I either we've picked a very expensive carpet or he's taking the piss.

Soundsgood · 25/04/2018 06:56

What is the brand of carpet & name of range?

Just Google it for the price.

I used Cormar Carpet in Artic Grey.

I saved £900 by going to the industrial estate carpet shop, for exactly the same carpet from 2 other company's.

wowfudge · 25/04/2018 07:09

You're only being ripped off if the fitter is charging over the odds for the carpet, underlay, etc. You can buy them direct from a wholesaler to save money and just pay the guy for fitting if you prefer. That's what we did when we last had a room carpeted. We still spent £600 on the carpet because we wanted a really good quality wool mix carpet.

AgnesSkinner · 25/04/2018 07:29

80% wool twist carpet can be anything from £20 to £60+ per sq m, plus underlay and fitting. You need to know the retail cost of the carpet itself to compare costs.

Soundsgood · 25/04/2018 08:32

The only thing that put me off wool carpet was, it is less stain resistant and Moths

PickAChew · 25/04/2018 10:29

Moths are why I avoided wool. The curtains that were left in this house we're pretty moth holed and when we spotted the culprits, they turned out to be those tiny carpet moths. Not found any sign in the carpets we've removed, despite the cheap felt underlay, but I'd rather play it safe.

wowfudge · 25/04/2018 11:07

I've lived in houses with wool carpets all my life and never had a moth problem.

Loueytb3 · 25/04/2018 14:08

Ok, so I got a breakdown of the costs and it does seem reasonable:

  1. £24 per sqm = £410, underlay £235.50, fitting £75
  2. £33.20 per sqm = £544, underlay £117.60, fitting + adhesive £80

He had included £200 for re-stretching and re-fitting the existing carpets (which the builders have taken up) but the builder is going to sort that with him so it brings the total down to just over £1500. A lot of money but it is roughly in line with what you might expect for that type of carpet.
