Thoughts on these tiles for a bathroom

I have 2 completely different designs in mind! One is tiles, one is wallpaper.

Tiles would go on 2 walls - behind sink and loo and behind shower (big walk in shower, no bath). Painted white walls elsewhere. White floor.

Wallpaper would go behind sink and loo and then would have to think of something else for shower area. Would it be possible to wallpaper it and then stick one of those clear Perspex panels over it? Or would it just peel straight off?

Tiles - like the whole bathroom style to be honest!

I think wallpaper in a bathroom is a problem waiting to happen. you may be ok and have such good ventilation and adequate space that condensation is never a problem, or you may not. And nothing is more depressing than peeling wallpaper. Stick to tiles.

I like those tiles too, make sure you get a good tiler, my dd spent a fortune on fired earth tiles and her tiler was rubbish, my tiles are cheap as chips but my tiler was ace.

I just love that wallpaper though and couldn't afford a similar design in tiles, even if I could find it! It's a spacious bathroom with no damp issues at all and isn't overused and doesn't steam up like a sauna.

Not that saunas steam up 😄

I don’t think wallpaper behind a loo or sink is a good idea.

heateallthebuns · 12/04/2018 15:46

Tiles much nicer. I think the wallpaper is a bit too faddy as it is not only geometric, grey, but also has rose gold in.

UpperWallop · 12/04/2018 15:46

I know it's not ideal but it's surely do-able? I could put a clear Perspex panel behind the sink to protect that area of wall.

We have a mix of tiles around the bath/shower and sink splashback and wallpaper. Wallpaper is only a problem if you have an unventilated bathroom with heavy condensation. A lot of people don't like fully tiled bathroom. I like the tiles and the wallpaper you've posted pictures of, but I think together the effect would be too busy. The regular pattern of the tiles will jar against the irregular pattern of the wallpaper.

UpperWallop · 12/04/2018 15:53

Heat - I know what you mean about the design of the wallpaper. I just think it looks so glamorous though!

Wow - it's an either or situation, not both together!

If it were my choice, I'd go with the tiles. The ones you show here are very nice.

Yes, you could put a perspex panel over the wallpaper. But I would imagine the panels would have to adhere to something. Either glue onto the paper - risking glue marks - or screw into wall - diminishing the waterproofing aspect as there'd be holes straight through to where the paper is.

Also, a perspex panel could flatten some of the texture/shade of the wallpaper. You might get some odd reflections in the perspex. And if moisture gets behind it, you could still get some bubbling/peeling issues.

heateallthebuns · 12/04/2018 15:54

It is lovely, but I think you'd get bored off it quicker than the tiles.

wowfudge · 12/04/2018 15:59

Glass might be better (toughened safety glass) - easy to scratch or damage perspex/acrylic especially when cleaning or with certain products.

SoupDragon · 12/04/2018 16:12

I could put a clear Perspex panel behind the sink to protect that area of wall.

And the loo.?

UpperWallop · 12/04/2018 16:13

But loos don't splash in any way.

Trust me, don't do wallpaper. It's just going to end badly.

heateallthebuns · 12/04/2018 16:22

The steam will cause it to peel off though.

Millipedewithherfeetup · 12/04/2018 16:47

I have a very small bathroom and have half tiles on sink wall with paper over...never had a problem with peeling and I get to change the whole look of the room very cheaply every 2 years or so.

Motherof3Dragons · 12/04/2018 16:50

You can get printed bathroom panels - wouldn’t that be an alternative? When we update our bathroom and kitchen, I will stay away from tiles and only opt for panels.

Whyiseveryonesoangry · 12/04/2018 16:53

I have wall paper behind my basin. No problem with peeling. Only toothpaste splashes!

LOVELYDOVEY05 · 12/04/2018 16:53

Been looking at panels too. Do they work out cheaper?

withouttea · 12/04/2018 16:55

Wallpapers for bathrooms seem to be 'in' and I've read about putting a special varnish over the top to reduce issues with peeling. I don't know how to do a link but a quick search should find suitable products.

It won't last as long as tiles but isn't that part of the charm - you can change it when you get bored of it much more easily than tiles?

ilovesprouts · 12/04/2018 17:09

I like tiles all the way

UpperWallop · 12/04/2018 18:03

Looky looky, I found these tiles....but at £10 per tile, I don't think I'll be going with that option!!
