Please tell me about your boiling water/near enough to boiling water taps

We're redoing our kitchen, and keen to put in a tap that does near-enough boiling water, as well as hot and cold.

Can't quite stretch to a Quooker, and a bit baffled by the choice out there.

If you have one, what kind do you have, and would you recommend it? Do you wish you'd gone for something else instead?

We never use ours.

soundsystem · 10/04/2018 15:06

Oh really? That's useful to know, thanks! Do you find yourself using a kettle instead, or do you just not need boiling water as often as you thought?

We use ours. Our kettle has just given up the ghost and now that we don’t need it for making up baby bottles, it won’t be replaced.

It is a Quooker, but one we inherited with our last property We bought it with us when we moved.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 10/04/2018 15:10

We thought we would use it to make tea but it isn’t quite boiling, so the tea doesn’t taste the same.

I might use it once a week when I chuck something down the plug hole to keep it fresh but other than that it sits there unloved. We are thinking of having it removed, getting the hole in the quartz widened and having another tap with a hose attachment added instead.

SallyOMalley · 10/04/2018 15:12

We have them at work. I agree - the tea doesn't taste the same and it is never quite hot enough.

We're redoing our kitchen too and dh wanted one of these, but I've put my foot down purely on the not-quite-hot-enough tea!

MelvinThePenguin · 10/04/2018 15:12

Sorry posted too soon.

*brought.

My parents have one too. The convenience of not having to wait for a kettle to boil and having clear work surfaces are the big draws.

It’s probably not the most environmentally friendly/ economical thing we own though, if that bothers you.

mckenzie · 10/04/2018 15:16

We have a 3 in one so hot and cold water on one side and boiling water on the other.
We use it daily and love it.

soundsystem · 10/04/2018 15:26

Thanks for the info

@mckenzie what brand is yours? I think the 3 in one is what we're looking for!

We have the quooker boiling tap. It is boiling and doesn't make tea taste funny. It's the best thing we had put in our kitchen. Instant tea. Instant pans of boiling water for pasta. I also use it to splash water on the cloth to wipe the sides down (rather than standing for several minutes waiting for the tap to run hot). I absolutely love it. Although realise this post is slightly pointless as you said you can't afford a Quooker, sorry!

soundsystem · 10/04/2018 15:34

Haha Francis It's more that I'm not sure if I can quite justify the cost, rather than strictly can't afford one. Might be swayed by tea tasting like tea, I think...

I have never come across one that makes water hot enough for tea.

Perhaps a Qooker does, but I'll never be paying that much to find out - will stick to a kettle!

PlumsGalore · 10/04/2018 15:39

I have a Quooker and had it installed with the kitchen six years ago so probably not the newest model. I have had it serviced and new filter once. I couldn't be without one now, and I use it for everything from the obvious hot drinks to pans of cooking water to part filling my mop bucket. I also do the plash on a cloth for worktops as Francis above said.

There is a knack to making tea with the Quooker and I let it run for a second before adding it to a mug or pot otherwise what is in the pipe cools it down and it leaves a slight film on the top of the drink.

Twinkie1 · 10/04/2018 15:41

Tea isn't supposed to be made with boiling water anyway apparently.

We have a Franke tap which does not and cold and boiling and filtered for drinking.

Love it. Hate having clutter out on the side and I find it makes tea hot enough and you get used to the slightly different taste pretty quickly, it just like when you move house and the water is different or you get a new kettle.

haggisaggis · 10/04/2018 15:56

We’ve got a Quooker - had it about 3 months now and love it! Use it for drinks (including tea - don’t notice any difference in the taste) to quickly add stock to a pan, water for pasta etc. It’s brilliant! I swithered between the Quooker and the Franke before splurging for the Quooker.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 10/04/2018 16:03

We have a Franke minerva and I love it.

GertieGitana · 10/04/2018 16:08

I always thought it was boiling water for tea, and off the boil for coffee?

japanesegarden · 10/04/2018 16:10

Have an insinkerator, have had it for 5 years now, love it.

RueDeWakening · 10/04/2018 16:11

Ours is an Insinkerator, it's fab and I love it - we've had it about 7 years and don't own a kettle any more. We use it a lot, for coffee and tea, also for filling the occasional pan when doing pasta or noodles etc, making Bisto gravy...
You replace the filter on it every 3 months or so, both hot and cold water are filtered.

It's this one: insinkerator.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/insinkeratoruk/steaming-hot-water-taps/hc1100-hot-and-cold-water-tap

twer · 10/04/2018 16:12

Supplée hère too and i really wouldn't compromise!
It's amazing, will never be without one

twer · 10/04/2018 16:13

What ON EARTH happened there Grin.
Should've read: Quooker here too

Spanglybangles · 10/04/2018 16:22

I have family members who have them in their homes and one has just had a new kitchen fitted and gone for the Grohe one which does the cold hot and boiling water all in one. It must be good as they researched first and like to get the best of stuff.

Whenthereshope · 10/04/2018 16:25

Mines shite. Not hot enough. They also dribble out unlike the adverts. I wouldn't get one again.

PetraDelphiki · 10/04/2018 16:29

Love my qooker trying to work out if I can justify replacing it with the 3 in one with the pull out hose (sadly probably can’t)...use it for everything including dh’s very pretentious teas!

ScienceIsTruth · 10/04/2018 16:34

We've just decided on the Grohe Red duo, which does boiling, hot and cold in 1 tap.

ScienceIsTruth · 10/04/2018 16:41

It's the II model, which is newer. Like the one seen here. www.appliancehouse.co.uk/shop/Grohe-RED-U-Spout-Boiling-Water-Kitchen-Tap.html
