If you could live in any town or village in the U.K where would it be?

Overlooking the harbour at Findochty.

Hay On Wye - love all rhe bookshops and the festival. I would love to move there when I retire.

bella2bella · 28/03/2018 07:48

Goring on Thames. Beautiful, a few shops and pubs but still a villlage feel. Quickly train to Reading and Oxford not far either.

MrsStarwars · 28/03/2018 07:48

Lincoln has lots of nice surrounding villages. Good selection of schools and university too. We enjoy the countryside but also love the cathedral quarter in the city.

I was in this position.

not Cornwall, Lakes, Pennines, Peaks due to climate. Could have been Newcastle environs but too far north so climate again. Could have been west Welsh coast but too far from facilities. Could have been Sussex coast but too pricey.

so it is here - access to facilities, good climate, peaceful and has everything except nearby sea.

Bury st Edmunds is lovely. We lived there for a few years but couldn’t afford to buy. I would happily live in one of the villages on the outskirts.

Hd8 area of Huddersfield... it's gorgeous countryside and my family are there.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 28/03/2018 14:25

Sheffield? Why? It's such a dump (and I used to live there)

sashh · 28/03/2018 14:37

I want a village that has easy access to a town, good schools and preferably not too far from a good college and university. I'm not asking for much

Kidlington?

Cambridge. I grew up there and would love to move back, but jobs and property prices mean it's not feasible (or at least not sensible).

The traffic is ridiculous, but that's why everyone cycles. As long as you assume that a bike will appear from nowhere at any moment, you're fine - bikes have right of way. And I don't find it unfriendly at all, but perhaps that's because all my memories are there. The idea that the Jesus Green lido is the only good thing about Cambridge is slightly mad... what about the beautiful tree-lined avenue on Jesus Green, for a start? Great foodie culture, lots of cultural events all year round, the Fitzwilliam museum, lovely cosy pubs, decent shops in a small area, lots of green spaces and water, surrounded by beautiful countryside, plenty of tech jobs at the Science Park, less than an hour to London on the train...

If we win the lottery I'm buying one of the big Victorian houses behind Midsummer Common. I'd spend my days wandering around Cambridge taking photos.

I want to go back to Great Missenden (Bucks) - lived there briefly as a child and and again pre-Uni and often wistfully think about being back there...

Nearest town is High Wycombe, but have no idea what that's like nowadays though, and not a clue on schools Smile

I'm loving all of these so far, thank you!

University not totally essentially but I keep thinking of doing a PhD xx

Eaglesham, to the south of Glasgow.

Your kids would be Scottish students for university funding purposes too.

UnimaginativeUsername · 28/03/2018 15:28

The Scottish student thing wouldn’t make any difference for PhD funding. But there are 4 universities nearby.

NeverUseThisName · 28/03/2018 15:37

Huge choice in the triangle between Reading, Windsor and Farnborough.

Many excellent schools and 6th form colleges, several towns, easy access to London. Reading University, plus London, Southampton and Oxford are potentially also accessible.

Rebecca36 · 28/03/2018 18:20

Me too, Bromley London Borough, quite happy here. Would recommend, easy transport links from Bromley South and North into central London, plenty of buses, good shopping centre and pleasant town with theatre and restaurants. Nice residential roads.

Mamaohana · 28/03/2018 19:44

Cambridge is lovely and I’d feel extremely privileged if I could live in a historic property there. I’ve never found it unfriendly but traffic can get congested and some of the outlying areas are a bit underwhelming compared to the beautiful centre. Also love the Cotswolds, preferably Chipping Camden but I’m not fussy. Holt in Norfolk is a beautiful small town too.

GrouchyKiwi · 28/03/2018 21:10

Edinburgh. We're now just outside the city in East Lothian but I'd really love to be able to afford a house like this in the city itself. I miss living there.

Lots of places in Central Belt Scotland would fit your criteria, OP.

Mosaic123 · 29/03/2018 01:11

Hampstead in London, as long as I had a few parking spaces. A beautiful and very cool place.

Bluesheep8 · 29/03/2018 15:58

I'd second what a pp said about Huddersfield area. Stunning countryside walks and views and lovely old stone properties. University and bustling multi cultural Huddersfield nearby with good transport links. I'd look at Meltham or Marsden.

Also came on here to say Cambridge! I am aghast at it being called boring...

BlueAnchor · 30/03/2018 21:24
