Do you 'air' your house every morning?

Please help settle an ongoing dispute between me and DH! I admit I'm a bit obsessive about it but I really like to open the windows in the morning before work! Especially bathrooms after showers, bedrooms and the kitchen. My husband thinks I'm insane. He says he doesn't have time to open and close a window. Every winter we have the same disagreement every single morning. I used to just do it myself, but with 2 young DC to get ready we need team work in the mornings! Should add we live in a radon area if that makes a difference...

I live in a self airing house. Aka old and draughty. No need to air it. It does it all by itself.

brownelephant · 17/03/2018 20:07

It's bloody freezing here! How does your house not get freezing?

by only opening windows a few times for 10 min or so. so the warm/damp air gets exchanged for dryer colder air but the walls inside stay warm. the home therefore doesn't get cold.

Chienrouge · 17/03/2018 20:11

Yes every morning but only for about 10 mins or so in the winter. Not sure if it’s psychological but the house just feels so much fresher/less stuffy.

Starryskiesinthesky · 17/03/2018 20:12

And how do you have time every morning?! I am rushing around as it is without opening every window then going back after 10 mins to shut them all!

Chienrouge · 17/03/2018 20:13

And how do you have time every morning?!

My toddler and pre schooler both get up at the crack of dawn... I have loads of time in the morning!

brownelephant · 17/03/2018 20:15

And how do you have time every morning?

takes 2 min.
all windows are easily accessible and it's not as if I need to push furniture around to get to them.
it's also not a mansion, so not too many windows

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 17/03/2018 20:15

Also, if you have heating on 24/7, aren’t your heating bills astronomically expensive?

mine aren't. It cost me a lot less to keep the heating on low than stopping it at night to put it on full blast in the morning, and it takes a while to heat up the house properly.

I air the house, but if it's really freezing outside, no more than 5 minutes per room (roughly) and 10-15 mn for the bedroom. I don't even like the idea to make a bed still warm. It's only a pain when it's windy and pouring with rain, I can only open windows on one side of the house!

Even old doughty house need a bit of fresh air.

And how do you have time every morning?

I wake up and open the curtains. They are near the window Wink so I take .5 of A second to open it. Then I go to the ensuite to pee and shower. The window for the ensuite happens to be in the ensuite as pure luck would have it so I open it whilst I’m there. .5 of a second to do so. DS(12) opens his curtains and the nearby window in his room and he showers in the family bathroom so he opens that window. DS(8) opens his bedroom window when he opens his curtains. I open the spare room window on my way out of DS(8)’s room to after waking him. As I walk past the living room to the kitchen I nip in and spend about 2 seconds opening the two windows onto the latch. When I’m in the kitchen I open the back door after opening the curtains covering it and the same with the window. You’re probably talking less than 10 seconds to open all the windows in the house. If you need to close them again before you go ( I don’t) then do it as you’re going back through the house to brush teeth etc.

appleschnapps · 17/03/2018 20:23

Yes. Bedroom windows are open all day. Living room windows are open every morning aswell as the back door.

Kismett · 17/03/2018 20:23

Now I’m wondering if my house smells bad and we don’t realize it.

Greenglassteacup · 17/03/2018 20:24

Yes I do this

BuzzKillington · 17/03/2018 20:28

We have all the upstairs windows open all year round - bathrooms and bedrooms.

Can't sleep in a sealed room and our house is 400 years old, so no trickle vents.

ImTakingTheEssence · 17/03/2018 20:33

Yes i like to have them all open pretty much all the time. I live in a block of flats and i get smells coming from downstairs like cooking, smoke etc. My bedroom stinks in the morning so windows open as far as i can get them for about half an hour. Even if its raining/ snowing. My ex used to shut them and shut all the doors too which i hate. I worry about my house smelling. When i go to my dads the smell of his house stays on me when i leave and he rarely opens his windows, he has cats and smokes its just foisty smelling.

Starryskiesinthesky · 17/03/2018 21:00

I am now wanting to do this but if our front door is left open for a minute we freeze. How can you avoid freezage?!

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 17/03/2018 21:08

Now I’m wondering if my house smells bad and we don’t realize it.
Do you notice a stale smell when you come back after a couple of weeks? If not, it's probably not that bad. Mine doesn't smell fresh, even my bedroom smells stuffy in the morning - and is one of the room without the heating on at night.

Kismett · 18/03/2018 00:23

I don’t, ikeep. We do have a couple small air filters we use at home now but I haven’t had them in every place I’ve lived and I’ve never kept open windows in my adult life because of my allergies. Although those may have had filters in the central heating and cooling systems.

PNGirl · 18/03/2018 08:59

Never in winter. This week was the first time in months and now it's snowing again. I live in a new build townhouse with trickle vents and the bathrooms have no windows so we have serious extraction. No mould ever!

Chienrouge · 18/03/2018 09:01

Just been and opened all mine, despite the snow!
We have good ventilation and no mould, I just like fresh air.

Sosog00d · 18/03/2018 10:34

It's blowing a Gale here.. all windows are open. I love to air the house.

babyboyHarrison · 18/03/2018 10:39

How old is your house? If it is relatively modern it will have a radon barrier below the ground and likely a ventilated space below the floor slab to dilute any gases. I which case not sure airing is necessary. Otherwise seems sensible.

Starryskiesinthesky · 18/03/2018 10:56

Ok, I have opened my bedroom window and despite the snow it actually hasnt made that much difference to the temp (I dont have the heating on in there anyway). Will maybe venture further and open a few more!

alwaysontimeneverlate · 18/03/2018 11:07

Ah the good old window war! We have this. First thing I do when I get up is open bathroom, kitchen and lounge windows for a bit. My bedroom window is open pretty much all the time except when we are out. Dh thinks am crazy and goes around closing them all.

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 18/03/2018 12:26

I do when the weather isn't very cold but my OH hates it when I do! He is very sensitive to the cold Confused

Lonoxo · 18/03/2018 19:56

This has become an obsession of mine since I’m on mat leave. Bathroom all day, kitchen whenever I’m in it. If it’s not raining or snowing, I will try to open the bedrooms and hallway windows before breakfast and close it after breakfast (particularly my bedroom to get rid of the smell of nappy changes). We dry our clothes indoors so I would like to open the downstairs window but I don’t want the baby to get cold. Don’t have the heating on overnight. Minor condensation and mould problem.

Starryskiesinthesky · 18/03/2018 20:50

Ok have just shut bedroom window. Fucking cold in there!
