Do you 'air' your house every morning?

Please help settle an ongoing dispute between me and DH! I admit I'm a bit obsessive about it but I really like to open the windows in the morning before work! Especially bathrooms after showers, bedrooms and the kitchen. My husband thinks I'm insane. He says he doesn't have time to open and close a window. Every winter we have the same disagreement every single morning. I used to just do it myself, but with 2 young DC to get ready we need team work in the mornings! Should add we live in a radon area if that makes a difference...

If I'm at home all day yes. If not then I don't, otherwise I'd be panicking all day whether I closed them or not.

ferrier · 15/03/2018 18:32

Nope never. Would be terribly wasteful of heat and have never felt the need.
None of the house has mould.

whoareyoukidding · 15/03/2018 18:33

Yes I do air the house every day before I go to work, especially the bedroom, for the reason others have given. And me and my DH play the same game too: I open the window, he walks in the room 5 mins later and closes it, I walk in 5 mins later and open it again...rinse and repeat:)

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 15/03/2018 18:35

Yes, religiously every morning and as often as possible really. I hate that musty, stuffy smell. I have colleagues who never ever open their office window. I guess they have become immune to the smell 😷

ManicPixieDream · 15/03/2018 18:35

My DH is worried about creepy crawly or winged creatures getting in but I like to air the house. Tend to do it when cleaning so unfortunately not every day.

PickAChew · 15/03/2018 18:35

I like a window open when it's not pissing down, icy cold or blowing a gale. I use a dehumidifier for a few hours, when I can't have windows open. This house particularly needs it because it has a wall that's been saturated by knackered flashing around a chimney, not helped by all the air bricks having been painted over.

PragmaticWench · 15/03/2018 18:40

Yes, houses need to be heated and aired. DH follows me around and slams them shut, muttering about 'throwing fivers out of the window' but I ignore him because he's wrong!

DD has asthma and I'm certain it's worse if we don't air the house.

scaredofthecity · 15/03/2018 18:43

Interesting. Our house was only built in the 70s and we have to air it.
It took be a few months to realise this and we had a little black mould forest growing Blush

BringMeTea · 15/03/2018 18:48

Yes. Bedroom and bathrom window every day. Other windows if I am in during the day. It is necessary to avoid stale air. Definitely bedroom.

onlyonaTuesday · 15/03/2018 18:50

Yes . Bedroom and bathroom windows are open daily.
Back door is always open if I'm at home.

PickAChew · 15/03/2018 18:50

We kissed a few 70s frogs before we found this house and every single one had at least one visible patch of damp, either at ground or eaves level. This was in the height of summer, too.

BringMeTea · 15/03/2018 18:51

Actually DH does follow me around shutting them. Why is it mostly women (seemingly) who recognize the need to air the house? I have agreed to not open windows if the heating is on.

Angryosaurus · 15/03/2018 18:54

Well I’m glad it’s not just me. Think I will take @pragmaticwench advice and ignore him because he’s wrong 😂

Yes I try to air mine as often as possible. My bedroom window is open all night, I feel like I can't breathe when it's shut. All other windows open when I'm home, even if I'm only home between jobs, for half hour or so, I will rush round and open a few windows to let some air in, and then rush round and close them before I go. I'm the only one who ever opens them. Dh doesn't open curtains in the morning either, he will just turn the lights on instead, and sit downstairs in a fusty smelling living room.

brownelephant · 15/03/2018 18:54

every day
all windows open as far as they go for 10 min after showers etc.
then bedroom windows for 10 before bedtime; kitchen after cooking.

JennyOnAPlate · 15/03/2018 18:55

I do when the weather is warm. In winter I just open the bathroom windows for a bit. The vents are always open on the windows though so that must help air it a bit in winter.

CoperCabana · 15/03/2018 19:00

I open mine in my bedrooms and bathrooms every day but you can lock them in a slightly open position iyswim. If I don’t do it, I feel strangely depressed when I go in those rooms later.

MimpiDreams · 15/03/2018 19:00

No we don't but we do have a proper ventilation system instead.

GlitterGlassEye · 15/03/2018 19:04

Not all windows every day. Just the kitchen and bathroom. Teenage ds bedroom gets done at the weekend because it’s just minging with him festering in it. He does open his own window mind.

Pinkprincess1978 · 15/03/2018 19:23

Nope. We have just enough time to get ready for work and school never mind going around opening then remembering to close windows! Plus I hate being cold 😀

pinkhorse · 15/03/2018 19:26

Yes every day. You can't beat clean fresh air in the house. The house feels dirty if it's been shut up.

LuluJakey1 · 15/03/2018 19:27

We have bedroom window and garden door open all day from about Easter until Oct as long as it isn't bad weather. Our bedroom window is open all night as well in the summer. In the winter we tend not to unless it is warm enough. No damp or mould.

mikesh909 · 15/03/2018 19:29

Those of you who do this, how do you square your need for 'airing' with your need for heating in the colder months? My house is barely warm enough with the heating on and windows closed and our bill is huge. It seems environmentally criminal and financially wasteful to be heating rooms with open windows?!

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 15/03/2018 19:30

Dh doesn't open curtains in the morning either, he will just turn the lights on instead, and sit downstairs in a fusty smelling living room.
My DH does this, too! Why? It's miserable!

Thisismyhappyface · 15/03/2018 19:30

Nope, we have a whole house ventilation system with heat recovery. The house is lovely and airy, and super warm- no heating other than log burner in the living room, even through the snow last week.
After years of damp and draughty cottages, its a dream!
