Worsley or Wilmslow?

ElAndy · 07/03/2018 23:34

Hello guys, I am currently looking for a place to buy in Manchester for me and my partner. The problem is that we are not from this area, therefore, we do not know which areas are safe to live at.

We would like to spend around 300k, 350k being the max for a 3/4 bed detached home. I have been looking for Hale, Worsley, and Wilmslow but there is not much choice, especially in Hale being 550k the cheapest detached home.

I know roughly the big names but not much more than that, I was super convinced to go to Worsley in Ellenbrook but I feel like Wilmslow is a nicer place, so I'm not sure!

Please let me know of any safe areas where you can start a family and not have to worry about getting stabbed. I am soft therefore wouldn't like a rough area.

Many thanks!

Holmes chapel is lovely. Also rural ish but not cut off, train station in village plus shops, bank, pubs, supermarket and very safe (no stabbings!) www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-47847270.html

Small parts of Worsley are nice, but it isn’t on the tram which means transport isn’t great. Likewise Monton is nice, but not well connected.

We moved from Pendlebury (nr Worsley/Monton/Swinton) to Sale for: better public transport, some decent eating/drinking places within walking distance for when we don’t want to go into town, easy access to the canal (and transpennine trail, for cycling), less costly than Altrincham (which has a nicer town centre and better local eating offers) and closer to current workplaces and motorway for potential future workplaces. Other people move to Sale for the schools, but that wasn’t an issue for us.

Have you looked at Prestwich? It’s N Manchester but has a goodly selection of eateries etc and the tram. It is trying to make itself the Didsbury of N Manchester.

madmomma · 08/03/2018 20:53

I'd look at Sale and Worsley for your budget. Maybe Heaton Moor near Stockport. Chorlton possibly, maybe Urmston or Flixton too.

preggersteach · 08/03/2018 20:56

Prestwich, it is bury but food transport links, good centre being developed, very safe, good schools and lovely place to live

minniemoll · 08/03/2018 21:01

Further north the Rossendale Valley is much cheaper than any of the places you've mentioned, there are great motorway links via the A56/M66, and you're on the edge of fantastic countryside where you can walk for miles from your doorstep. I believe the schools are good too. Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall are both full of independent shops as well as big supermarkets, they're probably more down to earth than Altrincham and Hale, but that's not a bad thing imo.

drinkswineoutofamug · 08/03/2018 21:01

@holycityzoo are you from Macc?

holycityzoo · 08/03/2018 21:10

Drinkswine no I'm not I worked there and I have family who lived there.

My son lives in Worsley, I feel quite safe visiting and it's easy enough to commute into central Manchester.

wowfudge · 08/03/2018 23:12

I have to say that none of the houses on Rightmove currently which are within the OPs budget in Worsley are in the area I think of truly Worsley. You dismissed the other areas I suggested OP because of traffic: they are all on train lines and bus routes which makes commuting to Manchester straightforward. We live five minutes from one of the New Mills stations and the train takes 30 minutes to get into Piccadilly. There's even an express bus to the airport.

educatingarti · 08/03/2018 23:20

I've lived on Salford for 30 years. It really isn't as bad as it is made out to be. Monton head a villagey feel and there are some lovely houses in nearby Ellesmere park. I live on the borders of Salford and Eccles and feel very safe.

wowfudge · 08/03/2018 23:24

I'm from Salford. Used to live near Worsley. Whenever there's a thread about the Manchester area there are always lots of people recommending places in Trafford and turning their noses up at other areas. And Worsley isn't even in North Manchester; it's west! I'd also be looking at semi detached houses though, not just detached.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/03/2018 23:32

Try going out of Wilmslow towards Dean Row/Handforth. They’re not quite as nice (and Dean Row doesn’t really have shops), but they’re cheaper and close enough for all practical purposes! Handforth has a couple of quite nice restaurants and several pubs.

Alderley Edge and Prestbury are lovely and a bit more village-y as well, but they’re probably over budget unless you compromise.

ElAndy · 08/03/2018 23:37

Thanks to both once again.

wowfudge - My partner and I will be going on a few little trips around Manchester and maybe reconsider Stockport area, its just some family lives in Brinny and I know its not really the best place of Stockport but it really put me off, but I shouldn't rule it out just because of that. But I do see traffic as a pain considering I like to drive often.

Yeah currently the homes that I really like or liked shall I say have been sold, at that time I never had the cash to buy it but at this moment I'm in a way better position to buy which is good, but it's is also bad because I missed out on some amazing homes. But I need to keep stressfree and believe and know that there is a home out there eventually which is waiting for me! Smile

The only place I have really considered around Worsley was Ellenbrook and East Moor as it feels very homely apart from that I have not really liked other areas too much around there.

In Wilmslow, as it stands there is absolutely nothing on my budget maybe the 2bed which got extended to 3 in Turnberry Drive. But even that is past what I wanted to spend...

I have a viewing on Sunday for an old but very high potential property in Carlton Avenue, Wilmslow once again it is out of my budget but its one of the only homes which I would not mind stretching the pocket for because of what it comes with. Now I'm not sure about that area does anyone know anything about "Carlton Avenue, Wilmslow"? Many thanks as always! Also if anyone could tell me maybe areas to avoid overall and specific areas to avoid in Wilmslow/Sale etc.

Great people and great feedback!
I know many of you probably will not care, but the amount of stress I have been going through trying to find the perfect home has been awful. This truly helps me because finally, I get to read loads of different opinions which is really helping me, so thank you all Smile.

I totally agree with Wowfudge* as I also live in South East Greater Manchester and love everything that it offers. Close proximity to Peak District and Manchester by train and a village feel plus good schools affordable housing.

userxx · 08/03/2018 23:55

Maybe look at Brooklands, it's between Timperley and sale. You need to move quickly as houses sell ridiculously quickly in the areas you are looking at. They are also ridiculously expensive!

Woodfordhound · 09/03/2018 00:11

I live in Woodford which is just south of Bramhall. I think Bramhall offers what you want as the primary schools are excellent but it’s also very community feeling with the annual duck race at the park and the festival Lots of nice bars and places to eat, very family orientated. Great place to bring up a family. Not as far out as Wilmslow either.

Woodfordhound · 09/03/2018 00:12

I’m not sure you’d get a detached house in your budget but you’d get something nice.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/03/2018 00:15

Avoid Colshaw Farm in Wilmslow.

The roads are a mess around Styal and Handforth at the moment because they’re extending the bypass towards the airport but hopefully that will help in the long run.

ElAndy · 09/03/2018 00:20

Thanks to all again!

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams when you mentioned avoiding Colshaw Farm in Wilmslow would you say "Carlton Avenue, Wilmslow" is that not far enough from Colshaw?

I'm not sure which place I got told to avoid once but I'm sure it started with Colshaw hence why I've mentioned it. Could you elaborate on why I should avoid it? Many thanks, guys.

OP posts:
ElAndy · 09/03/2018 00:23

After a bit of research yeah Colshaw Farm is apparently a very bad area in Wilmslow but they have tried to make it better... Once again would you say Carlton Avenue isn't far enough? many thanks!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/03/2018 00:34

It’s one of the old Manchester overflow council estates - it doesn’t feel like ‘traditional’ Wilmslow, because a lot of the families there weren’t originally from Cheshire.

Carlton Avenue would be fine - it really isn’t so bad it needs an exclusion zone Grin

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/03/2018 00:41

Overspill, not overflow. Spath Lane in Handforth is the other.

ElAndy · 09/03/2018 00:55

That’s good then because I really fell in love with this home even though it’s way out of my budget, haven’t seen it in person though...

But I’m glad to hear that it will be okay there because I’ve nearly made my mind up now, but I want to keep an open mind and open to other areas in case I decide not to buy this property. Many thanks!
